'I thought we competed very well'

Dundee United head coach Robbie Neilson is proud of his players despite defeat tonight.

"Over the two games I thought we competed very well," he tells BBC Sportsound. "There are areas we need to improve on, we know that and this was a good marker for us.

"It's a tough result and it shows us where we are. We still need to get over the line in the Championship, so it's now all about putting that to bed.

"We don't want to lose anyone from the squad. There might be more interest in Lawrence Shankland after tonight, so we'll see how that goes. It depends on the bids. If someone comes in with £1m, it's going to get papped out of the window."

Ross revels in four-goal victory

"You just to need to find a way in any cup tie," says Hibs head coach Jack Ross. "I can't complain about the chances we have created over the two games.

"We had to work hard but to score four goals is very pleasing. To bang out that kind of performance in what is our fourth game in 10 days is positive.

It looked like the first goal was the winner as the team who got it had the ascendancy. The first goal was scrappy, the second a wonderful goal. Falkirk just deserved it. The first half was instantly forgettable but now they've got that plum tie at home against Hearts.

They're a side flying high at the top of the Championship, they've spent plenty money and it was an evenly poised match. Hibs have been the better side of the two games, but it's not been a case of blowing Dundee United away. There's always been that threat, United were always in the game. It was a great game with both capable of opening each other up with lots of attacking intent.

We've been treated, ten goals over two ties, I don't think anybody can complain. Hibs in the end deserved to go through, they dominated the first game and tonight dominated again as they created great chances, although didn't take all of them. I wouldn't mind seeing this game again next year in the Premiership because if they serve up that type of football and entertainment I'll be happy sitting here.

Football fans are a superstitious bunch and followers of Hibs looking for omens will fondly remember they beat a Robbie Neilson side in a replay before going on to lift the Scottish Cup in 2016.

That's a first defeat in 15 matches for runaway Championship leaders Dundee United.

Manager Robbie Neilson will know there is work to be done over the summer but now it's all about getting over the line and sealing the title and promotion back to the big time.

Poor defending again from Dundee United but when you look at similar opportunities and openings in the first half, Doidge snatching and not getting things. But then in the second, three opportunities and he's smashed every one of them into the back of the net with real aplomb.
