  6. A debut for Stefan Effenbergpublished at 14:43 British Summer Time 4 April 2020

    Wales 1-0 Germany

As we’ve been the Matthias Sammer fan club today, it is a bit strange to watch the silky smooth passer taken off with his side desperately needing a goal.

However, the substitute, Steffan Effenberg, should need no introduction as one of the early 1990s finest midfielders, even though he is making his international debut.

Then of Bayern Munich, Effenberg went on to have a fine career and played 35 times for Germany, but he spent the 1990s as the German player notorious for being unable to stay out of the headlines.

That came to a crescendo when it was revealed Effenberg was having an affair with Claudia Strunz, the wife of his former teammate Thomas Strunz, in the late 1990s.

Effenberg and Strunz, pictured below, went on to be married.

And that header is Matthias Sammer's final act of this match.

The former East Germany captain has been excellent tonight but, surprisingly, he is leaving the field to be replaced by Stefan Effenberg.

A fiery, physically-imposing midfielder, 22-year-old Effenberg has earned some glowing reviews for his performances with Bayern Munich.

    Chance for Germany!

Rudi Voller crosses from the left and Matthias Sammer heads firmly towards goal, but his effort is well held by Neville Southall.

Ian Rush is one of the best finishers in the world, but he also grafts tirelessly for his team.

The Liverpool striker tracks back deep into Wales' half to regain possession and set Paul Bodin on his way for a counter-attack.

  11. 'You're not singing anymore'published at 69 mins

    Wales 1-0 Germany

Wales fans are absolutely loving this, and who can blame them?

They've been taunting their German counterparts with chants of "You're not singing anymore" and backing Terry Yorath's men at full volume.

Remember Wales haven't played at a major tournament since the 1958 World Cup, but victory here would give them a glorious opportunity to end that drought.

  12. Rush gives Wales the leadpublished at 14:36 British Summer Time 4 April 2020

    Wales 1-0 Germany

Every aspect of this goal is perfection.

Bodin’s ball is weighted perfectly, a little less Rush doesn’t get the chance, a little more and he may never have got there.

Rush’s run is sublime, he’s no longer a striker at full pace, but experience and know-how has seen him edge away from Guido Buchwald who is not going to catch him.

So then it is just about composure and Rush deals with a freakish bounce like it’s no big deal, distributing his weight over the ball so he’s in the perfect position to slam it home.

You’ve watched it 100 times, but it is worth the repeated viewing.

GOAL - Wales 1-0 Germanypublished at 66 mins

    Ian Rush

Wales lead against the world champions!

It starts with a German attack, with Jurgen Kohler finding himself on the left wing and seeing his cross cleared to the edge of the Wales penalty area.

From there, Paul Bodin picks up the ball and launches a brilliant lofted long ball over the German defence and into Ian Rush's path.

The ball bounces awkwardly for the Wales striker but he gets across Guido Buchwald and steadies himself, takes a touch and opens his body to fire past Bodo Illgner into the bottom corner.

What a composed finish, and what jubilant celebrations!

  14. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 64 mins

    Wales 0-0 Germany

Wales fans appeal for a penalty as Ian Rush appears to have his shirt pulled by Jurgen Kohler.

The Welsh players did not seem quite so convinced, but you really sense they're growing in confidence now.

Once more, the National Stadium in Cardiff is rocking.

  15. Berthold sees redpublished at 14:33 British Summer Time 4 April 2020

    Wales 0-0 Germany

Can Wales take advantage of that Germany red card?

The home crowd certainly believe, and Terry Yorath's players seem to as well.

Mark Hughes floors Andreas Brehme with another late tackle which he gets away with, and it seems to unsettle the German wing-back as his next back-pass goes out for a Wales corner.

Are the visitors starting to feel the pressure?
