  3. 'A sad day for Sheffield Wednesday'published at 17:29 British Summer Time 11 July 2020

It was a day of mixed emotions for Sheffield Wednesday. On the pitch, they ended a run of three-straight defeats with a convincing win over QPR, but off it they came to terms with the loss of former manager Jack Charlton, who has died at the age of 85.

Charlton was boss of the Owls for more than 300 games in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and current boss Garry Monk paid tribute to one of his predecessors.

"Some of my early memories in football, that Republic of Ireland team with Jack in charge, we hold him in such high regard," said Monk.

"It’s a sad day in respect of Jack for Sheffield Wednesday and the world of football. Our thoughts are with him and his family."

However, Monk was delighted with the response of his team: "We have to be very pleased with that performance and result. It was the complete performance. We needed a response from the last three and we got a complete performance today."

"We played with passion and heart and it shows they’ve got that in them. The players deserve a lot of praise for that."

  4. Reaction: Cocu defends Rams keeper Hamerpublished at 17:23 British Summer Time 11 July 2020

    FT: Derby 1-3 Brentford

Derby look dejectedImage source, PA Media

Brentford's win over Derby also dented the Rams' fading play-off hopes.

Phillip Cocu's side remain three points outside the top six with three games left, but travel to sixth-placed Cardiff in midweek.

Derby drew level with the Bees through Jason Knight but were unable to recover after goalkeeper Ben Hamer's error gifted Said Benrahma the first of his two second-half goals.

"It’s frustrating, events occur during the game but I think we played a decent game against a very strong team," said Cocu.

"Ben took full responsibility for his mistake but I think it’s also too easy to only blame the goalkeeper because if a striker, Benrahma, is able to take a shot in the 18-yard box just two-and-a-half minutes after the break it is just poor defending by the whole team."

  5. Reaction: Brentford in a 'good place' - Frankpublished at 17:20 British Summer Time 11 July 2020

Brentford kept up the pressure on the top two as Said Benrahma scored twice in a 3-1 win over play-off hopefuls Derby.

The result leaves the Bees three points off the top two with three games left to play.

"We knew when we went into this restart we were 10 points off the top two so that was a very difficult task," said head coach Thomas Frank.

"Our aim was to win as many games as possible and first and foremost to secure a play-off place and then see what is happening but now, can we catch them (the top two)? Fantastic but if not, then we want to keep the momentum and good performances and take that into the play-offs.

"Right now, we are in a very good place and we just need to continue. I am spoiled with good players that it is a privilege to coach and be around."

  6. Reaction: Careers on the line - Bowyerpublished at 17:18 British Summer Time 11 July 2020

    FT: Charlton 0-1 Reading

Charlton remain deep in relegation trouble after being beaten at home by Reading - but boss Lee Bowyer was far from happy with the officiating.

The Addicks saw an Chuks Aneke effort ruled out for offside and believed they should have had a penalty after Reading's winner came from the spot.

“It’s disappointment, again, it’s another game that we should have got something from and we haven’t really done much wrong,” said Bowyer.

“They get a penalty early on, and then after that I thought we were the better side.

“I thought we created more clear-cut chances again. And decisions have cost us.

“The officials have cost us the game today, it’s plain and simple.

“Chuks Aneke, his goal is a goal. And I said to the fourth official, ‘the linesman can’t just guess’.

“You have to be 100% right on these decisions, these are big moments, there are careers on the line.

“My players give everything and we haven’t got our rewards.

“If their penalty was a penalty then so was ours, because Jake [Forster-Caskey] got dragged to the floor, and it’s a penalty.

“So you’ve got the offside and the penalty. Big decisions.

“I’d love to know what he puts in his report, because I know my report isn’t going to be good for him.

“Something has to be done, because that wasn’t up to scratch, all of them, the ref and the two linesmen.”

Well, today's results certainly haven't cleared up who might take that last play-off space.

Millwall's win at Hull lifts them right back into the mix, and Preston will also still fancy their chances thanks to their draw with Nottingham Forest.

And, almost unbelievably, a week after sacking boss Lee Johnson, Bristol City are dreaming again following their back-to-back wins over Hull and Middlesbrough.

Swansea will go sixth if they avoid defeat against top-of-the-table Leeds on Sunday.
