Leipzig overcame a frankly woeful Tottenham in the last round, while Atletico 'did a job' against champions Liverpool. In the best Diego Simeone way possible.
The cult figure of a coach has led Atleti to five Champions League quarter-finals including two finals - sadly for them coming up short against Real on both occasions.
The 50-year-old Argentine has also helped the side to a league title, a Copa del Rey, a Spanish Super Cup, two Europa League crowns and a couple of Uefa Super Cups. Decent.
Here's the man in black in textbook form:
"We want our players to take the game by the scruff of the neck to try and harm our opponents.
"This is a beautiful competition and we are very excited to be in it. In a game like this winning isn't just important, it's the only thing that matters."
... can be found by reading Alex Bysouth's very good insight piece.
When Diego Simeone made his debut for Argentina in 1988, Julian Nagelsmann was most likely being upgraded to his Germany 12-18 months baby gro.
The German has only recently turned 33 and is set for bigger things. He helped Hoffenheim qualify for the Champions League for the first time in their history after, at the age of 28, becoming the youngest manager to lead a Bundesliga side.
And in his first season at Leipzig he's helped the club reach the Champions League for the second successive season by guiding the side to third in the league. You could say he's given them wings... ahem..
Here are a few words from the man in question:
"We know that they have a lot of experience over two legs, but anything can happen in just one game.
"We will all be thrown into cold water, because of this situation, so experience isn't as big a factor as it might have been."
You might have read that Atletico's forward Angel Correa and defender Sime Vrsaljko tested positive for coronavirus - the pair are isolating at home and will miss the rest of the tournament.
The two positive cases were discovered after players and staff travelling to Lisbon were tested in Madrid on Saturday.
Coach Diego Simeone said: "I hope we can get Correa and Vrsjalko back if we stay in the competition. They have given their hearts for the team whenever they have been called upon."

KOTDM1988: Atletico, 1-0. Expecting the least entertaining game of the round (hopefully reverse psychology pays off and it finishes 5-4 aet)

Kieran Trippier is just the fourth different English player to start a Champions League quarter-final with a non-English club. Who are the others?
I don't know, that's why I'm asking... only kidding, of course I know the answers.
I'll give them out in a bit.
It wasn't the greatest of timing, but money talks as someone once sang.
Striker Timo Werner's move to Chelsea will have been a blow to Leipzig fans, especially having reached this stage of the competition, but Julian Nagelsmann was pretty relaxed when somebody brought up the subject in the pre-match presser.
He said: "It's not as if we have to play with a man less. We have the ability in midfield and attack to score goals. We have players who played little because of Timo and those players who were in the shadows can now take the responsibility."

RB Leipzig make seven changes from their final Bundesliga game back in June. Timo Werner has of course joined Chelsea so Yussuf Poulsen will lead the line.

Alvaro Morata is left out by Diego Simeone as Diego Costa plays up front on his own. Saul, Yannick Carrasco and Anfield hero Marcos Llorente come in.

Guillem Balague: Accidents, mistakes will be so relevant - another reason to be cautious. Who can take advantage of mistakes, force mistakes? Atletico Madrid can do that. They won’t care if nothing happening in the games - that might benefit Atletico
Kristof Terreur: I don’t have any favourites at the moment - but I stick to Atletico, because these circumstances will suit Simeone. They were very efficient against Liverpool. You don’t like masterclass defending but you accept it. The way they did it was not entertaining, but they proved they were better over the two games. Now v Leipzig they are favourites and that makes life more difficult. If they are favourites they can't always play their favourite game.
Julien Laurens: Leipzig will be without striker Timo Werner, their best player by far and makes Leipzig nowhere near the team they were against Spurs.

They don't have Timo Werner, but do RB have enough firepower to break down a stubborn and disciplined Atletico?
Who do you think could give them the edge?

There are four changes to Atletico's starting XI from their last league game - the 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad. Striker Alvaro Morata and midfielder Thomas Partey are two players of the four to drop out of the XI.
Meanwhile, RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann makes seven changes from the line up that started in the 1-1 draw against Wolfsburg at the end of July. Winger Emil Forsberg is on the bench.
