Premier League West Brom against Championship Brentford. But it could so easily have been the other way round. Just a different result here and there in the run-in last season and the Bees would be heading to the Baggies as a top-flight side.

It would be fair to say that Slaven Bilic's side have struggled a bit in their first two games back in the big time, conceding eight times in two defeats. Thomas Frank's dangerous side are probably not the opponent they would have wished for tonight.

West Brom v Brentford (19:00 BST)

West Brom make three changes to the side that defeated Harrogate in the second round of the competition.

Branislav Ivanovic and Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher both start as does winger/forward Matt Phillips.

Brentford bring in Jan Zamburek, Emiliano Marcondes, Sergi Canos and David Raya from the side that defeated Southampton.

  5. And the official response from the Premier League...published at 18:09 British Summer Time 22 September 2020

    Premier League

The Premier League notes the Government’s announcement today and while the health of the nation must remain everyone’s priority, we are disappointed that the safe return of supporters to matches has been postponed.

The Premier League is certain that, through League-wide guidelines and a code of conduct developed with scientific experts and agreed by the Government’s Sports Ground Safety Authority, fans in stadiums will be as safe or even safer than at any other public activity currently permitted. This is already evident in other European leagues.

Football is not the same without attending fans and the football economy is unsustainable without them. Last season, Premier League clubs suffered £700m in losses and at present, our national game is losing more than £100m per month. This is starting to have a devastating impact on clubs and their communities.

We are confident that Premier League clubs, using innovative ways to get supporters safely back into grounds, will enable revenues to return to all levels of the game, as well as maintain solidarity arrangements, current tax contributions and financial support for local and national economies.

While there is a current pause in a date for fans returning to sports venues, the Premier League and our clubs will not slow down in our preparations for providing safe, bio-secure environments. We will continue to work with Government to bring supporters safely back into grounds as soon as possible.

  6. Fans return delayedpublished at 18:07 British Summer Time 22 September 2020

Sticking briefly with the covid and football theme, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed plans for fans to return to watch live sport events in England from 1 October will not go ahead.

The plans have been placed under review after a rise in coronavirus cases.

"We will not be able to do this from October 1 and I recognise the implications for our sports clubs, which are the life and soul of our communities," said the Prime Minister. "The chancellor and the culture secretary are working urgently on what we can do now to support them."

    More good news, eh?

  7. One downpublished at 18:04 British Summer Time 22 September 2020

As you probably already know by now, we've actually got less football on tonight than we thought we were going to have.

Leyton Orient's tie with Tottenham has been called off after a number of the O's first-team players tested positive for coronavirus.

It's a huge blow for the League Two club, who have not only been denied a chance to take on a Premier League side, but have lost out on some TV money that could well be crucial to them.

Sadly, you fear this is just a indication of the difficulties clubs face in the coming months. I'm not even going to get into the implications for the wider world.

  8. Football, football, footballpublished at 17:58 British Summer Time 22 September 2020

Did you think you were going to get a few days off? You fool.

Yes, after a weekend that produced a record number of Premier League goals for a 20-team season, football is not letting up, staunchly rumbling on in the form of the Carabao Cup.

They were taking the mickey at the time, but I can't help but feel Mitchell and Webb were really on to something with this...
