Celtic will look to get their season back on track in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday away to in-form Aberdeen, now only three points behind them in third.

Rangers, four points ahead and on the crest of a wave after wins over the reigning champions and Standard Liege, will host Livingston later that afternoon.

Before then, we have the battle of the maroons in the Championship on Friday as Arbroath host Hearts, followed by four top-flight games on Saturday.

So Rangers' sixth win on the bounce means they start Group D as one of two teams who have an away win on the board after Benfica eased aside Lech Poznan 4-2 in Poland.

They next host the Poles on 29 October, while Standard Liege travel to Portugal.

In contrast, Celtic's second defeat in a row means they find themselves one of two side who start Group H with a home loss.

Neil Lennon's side next travel to face French league leaders Lille, who trounced Sparta Prague 4-1, while AC Milan will be favourites to take care of their visitors from the Czech Republic.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon says there has been "a lot of hysteria" about his side suffering two defeats in a row.

He says that with players coming back from injury and from Covid-19 isolation, he is looking forward to a better performance against Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.

"For a lot of them, it has been stop-start, so a lot of them will be closer to playing and others will have more game time, so it will look a lot rosier for us," he adds.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon sees improvement in his side after the weekend defeat by Rangers despite tonight's loss at home to AC Milan.

"I thought we deserved something out of the game against a very good team," he says. "We were more like ourselves in the second half, but we just lacked the cutting edge.

"We started the game quite brightly, but we gave away two soft goals.

"Markedly better than the weekend. I thought Ajeti was outstanding, Laxalt was outstanding, Ajer did well. I thought there were some good performances out there."

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is also delighted with the 2-0 win away to Standard Liege in a Belgian rain storm.

"I think it’s a very important victory to start the group in a positive way," he said. "We've beat a good team. I think we deserved the victory.

"We were good defensively in the first half beside one moment with a cross, but in possession we needed to improve.

"In the second half, we were outstanding for 20 minutes then the game changed with the weather. It was very unpredictable for both teams, but we managed the game extremely well.

"We had one scary moment at the end, but thankfully Standard didn't score because it would’ve changed the game.

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has hailed Kemar Roofe's late goal in his side's 2-0 win over Standard Liege as "a world-class moment".

"The goal was a moment of genius," he said. "I’ve been playing football professionally since 1998 and it’s the best goal I’ve ever seen live with my own eyes.

"He collects the ball 15 yards outside our box, he’s strong for two challenges, holds a player off for the third and takes the same player on in the worst conditions I've seen.

"And to have the vision, the power and the class to score from 55 yards, I don’t think I've seen a better goal and I don’t think I will."

So there was to be no Scottish double at the start of the Europa League group stage.

Rangers earlier raised hopes with a fine 2-0 win away to Standard Liege, rounded off by a stunning late goal from Kemar Roofe.

However, neighbours Celtic were unable to follow suit and Neil Lennon's side slumped to a rare second defeat in a row.

In the other game in Celtic's group, Lille cruised to victory in Czech Republic.

Down to 10 men and 1-0 down at the break, Sparta Prague got back into the game through Borek Dockal, but the French side take the three points thanks to a Yusuf Yazici hat-trick.

Milan continue their fine run of form and the Serie A leaders ease to victory over Celtic.

It was all too easy in the first half as goals from Rade Krunic and Brahim Diaz gave the visitors a two-goal lead.

Mohamed Elyounoussi reduced the arrears as Celtic manager Neil Lennon changed his formation after the break, but Jens Petter Hauge broke clear to secure Milan's win in stoppage time.

Much work to do for Celtic if they are to qualify from this group after losing their opener at home.
