Now Austria attack and Stefan Ilsanker is inches away from sliding a cross in at the back stick.

NI are inches away from the lead. Liam Boyce is played in from the halfway line by a lucky deflection. He eventually shoots from the edge of the box and it's just wide of the far post.

But Conor Washington is furious. He was there at the back post waiting for a potential tap-in.

It's been a solid start for Northern Ireland. They don't look to have too much of an emotional hangover. I wonder if making so many changes has helped that.

Good play by NI striker Liam Boyce to close down Austria keeper Pavao Pervan but the hosts get away with it.

The last player to score for Northern Ireland was Niall McGinn against Bosnia-Herzegovina in October.

Since that game, they’ve attempted 25 shots across three games without a goal being scored by one of their players (their goal against Slovakia was an own goal).

It's a 3-5-2 for Northern Ireland.

Stuart Dallas, who wins his 50th cap tonight, is one of only two players to appear in every Nations League game for Northern Ireland so far (along with Steven Davis - until now).

He has been on the pitch for all but 77 minutes of their games in the competition – the fewest any player has missed.

KICK-OFF

We are under way in Vienna after a minute's silence for victims of a terrorist attack in the city earlier this month.

The players are out, it's national anthems time. It's a lot easier to hear the players singing without fans.

Northern Ireland keeper Michael McGovern thinks it is too soon for players to be considering their international futures.

Several of the squad are in their 30s and there are suggestions it might be the end of their era.

McGovern, 36, said: "I don't think this is a good time to speak about that. Emotions are running high.

"When you're talking about those type of things, it needs to be done when you're calm with a dispassionate mindset."

What now for Northern Ireland?

Former Northern Ireland winger Keith Gillespie thinks Ian Baraclough's side are set "for a difficult few years" after Thursday's Euro 2020 play-off defeat by Slovakia.

"We are not going to have long periods where we can keep sustaining what we have done. We know that when we went 30 years without qualifying," he said.

"We are a small nation and we don't have enough players to pick from where you can keep getting close to qualifying."

Sammy Clingan says the former Under-21 manager Baraclough should bring through the next generation of players.

Austria have won each of their last four meetings with Northern Ireland, with the most recent three all coming in the Nations League.

Northern Ireland have only had four shots on target, scoring once, in those three Nations League games.

Northern Ireland last won away at Austria in October 1994 (2-1 in a Euro qualifier).

'We looked at who could go again'

Northern Ireland boss Ian Baraclough spoke to Sky Sports about today's team selection.

"We lost a couple from injury," he said. "We looked at the lads and who could go again and who realistically is not putting themselves at risk. Fresh legs made sense.

"It was always going to be a tough time for everyone. Games come thick and fast. If you let it affect you, then it'll affect your performance."

Northern Ireland have lost their last three matches. They last lost four in a row in June 2012 (a run of six).

Austria have only failed to win three of their last 14 internationals (W11 D1 L2), winning their last four games.

Tonight is Ian Baraclough's seventh game in charge of the Northern Ireland senior team since stepping up from the u21 job.

They are yet to win in open play.

NI beat Bosnia on penalties in the Euro 2020 play-off semi-final but lost 2-1 in extra time to Slovakia in the final.

They drew their Nations League opener with Romania but have lost the other three games.
