Peter Goodwin: Given our season so far it would be more of a cup-set if Southend were beating Boreham Wood.

National League Boreham lead Southend - bottom of League Two and without a league win - 2-0.

  7. Round one a bittersweet moment for South Shieldspublished at 16:05 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2020

    Cheltenham 1-1 South Shields

South Shields’ place in the first round proper of the FA Cup – their first since 1973 – is a “bittersweet” moment, according to the club’s chairman Geoff Thompson.

Near neighbours Sunderland were the holders when South Shields last reached this stage nearly half a century ago, only to lose 4-0 to Rotherham. The Northern Premier League club is one of 10 clubs allowed to play in the competition this weekend despite not being classed as elite sport.

The fact that the game must be played behind closed doors is described by Thompson as “a bit of a travesty".

"It’s such a disappointment for our fans that they can't celebrate the fact we have got back into the first round after such a long time,” he told Press Association, adding that lockdown restrictions mean the team might not be allowed to even train after Saturday, creating a problem if they reach the next round.

South Shields would have been in the elite sport bracket if they had secured promotion to the National League North last season, and the club were 12 points clear at the top of the table when the first coronavirus lockdown was enforced in March.

“We face a period of massive uncertainty,” said Thompson. “I have always feared this new season will be ended prematurely.”

    Half-time

As it stands, we would have at least eight non-league teams in the second-round hat on Monday night.

Eighth-tier Marine are providing the biggest surprise at the halfway point, leading 1-0 at League Two side Colchester.

National League clubs Stockport, Dagenham & Redbridge, Boreham Wood and Woking all lead league opposition, while Brackley lead Bishop's Stortford, Canvey Island are ahead at Banbury, and one of Bromley and Yeovil, currently goalless, must progress too.

Plenty of other non-league teams in with a shout too - Darlington are level at Swindon, Concord at Stevenage, South Shields at Cheltenham (all 1-1), King's Lynn at Port Vale and Hartlepool at Salford (both 0-0).
