Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has also paid a glowing tribute to his former manager Gerard Houllier.

Speaking on Talksport, Murphy said: "He changed my career. He made me see football differently, the way I looked after myself and conducted myself. He was intelligent, warm and charismatic.

"For someone who couldn’t kick a ball straight he knew his football. Sometimes he would join in training and the lads would laugh when he tried to ping a ball because he couldn’t.

"In terms of knowing tactics, captivating a room and inspiring he was brilliant.

"It’s a sad loss I feel for his family. He wanted to know everything about his players. I would go through a brick wall for him. I’ve got so much to thank him for.”

  18. Carragher credits Houllier for longevity of careerpublished at 13:07 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2020

More from Jamie Carragher: "The education he gave me about how to look after myself, certainly off the pitch as much as on it, I think that was a big thing in how long I ended up playing for and staying at the club.

"I think without his advice at such a young age, I don't think I'd have had the career I had."

  19. 'I just absolutely adore that man' - Carragherpublished at 13:03 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2020

More from former Reds defender Jamie Carragher speaking to Sky Sports News, about the death of Gerard Houllier:

"He was a great man, I think that's why you can see the reaction today all over social media.

"It wasn't just as a manager and the job he did, not just for Liverpool, at other clubs, the influence he had on what the French did at the 1998 World Cup.

"But what he did for me, Stevie [Gerrard], Michael Owen, Danny Murphy, when he first came in.

"I don't think I or any of those lads or anyone else involved at the club would ever forget what he did for us and he just meant so much to use all. You're like a sponge for information at that age, you really look up to your manager, and just that spell that he had, I just absolutely adore that man."
