"If you win such an award and share that title with Messi and Ronaldo, that is unbelievable and it means so much to me. A long time ago, I remember I was longing for something like this and now I can win such and award. This really means, regardless of where you come form, all that matters is what you put into it.

"For the entire world this year was difficult, the greatest highlight was winning the Champions League final - such a special day and evening, that was an incredible feeling. That was a great moment.

"Then we won the cup and got every title we could possibly win. We have a great coach, great team and we all work towards one goal."

    Manchester City

More from Lucy Bronze: "I am quite obsessed with winning. Even if it is who can tie their shoelaces the fastest I will want to win. The competitive nature has been through my family and I have it in my blood. It has come through my career. I am excited about the future."

  8. Champions League win was 'huge achievement'published at 19:36 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2020

    Manchester City

Manchester City defender Lucy Bronze: "What a surprise. To even be nominated alongside the two other players, they are both incredible players and outstanding human beings well.

I don't think I have the words right now to explain how I am feeling. If there is anything 2020 has taught us it is to appreciate every moment you have, never look too far ahead and live in the hear and now. Iw ill appreciate twinning this award now more than ever and I will remember this moment for the rest of my life.

I want to thank all the clubs I have played for. I am never going to take the smallest things for granted, like just being at home, let alone winning a trophy of this stature.

"The magic had to be the Champions League. It was disappointing not to have the fans and the support there but it was incredible to feel that pressure and to win it in the end. It was a huge achievement for the club and something I will treasure for rest of my life."

What have you brought back from Lyon and what will you take into next year? "The crazy winning mentality, wanting to be the best. A huge reason for me coming back to home soil was to bring back being that serial winner. We have the Olympics coming up and a home Euros to follow and then a World Cup following that. I hope to bring all the experiences I had at Lyon and all my past experiences of winning trophies."
