Rob Schofield: Very unclear what NUFC's plan is. Longstaff getting closest to Wilson as a 10 at times but the ball is rarely high up enough with five at the back and two defensive midfielders. Sheffield United have started well, better in possession in this shape.

    Sheffield United 0-0 Newcastle

It's now more than 300 minutes since the Blades scored a Premier League goal but they look the most likely out there at the moment. John Lundstram has a thumping hit from downtown charged down.

We understand the frustration from Newcastle fans, but let's just see if the team comes out as the game goes on

    Sheffield United 0-0 Newcastle

Newcastle with 37% of the ball so far and not even close to a single effort on goal. As well as the Blades have played in the last 10 minutes or so there's still questions to be asked of the visitors.

Too deep, to negative? Ryan Fraser is sort of playing as a second striker by the way. Sort of a 5-3-2.

This is much more like it from John Lundstram, he's running beyond the Blades attack from midfield and stretching the Newcastle defence. He powers into the area again but is well held up before Chris Basham gets away with what looked like a foul on Ryan Fraser.

  6. GREAT SAVE!published at 12 mins

    Sheffield United 0-0 Newcastle

First real save of the night and it's a great move from the hosts! They cut through Newcastle with a couple of slick one-twos, John Lundstram playing the final sliderule pass into the run of Dave McGoldrick, who opens up his body on the left of the area and goes for the curler across goal but Karl Darlow makes the save.

Moments later Lundstram fizzes a shot wide. Blades looking sharp.

  7. Postpublished at 11 mins

    Sheffield United 0-0 Newcastle

Terrible. Newcastle have a free-kick about 45 yards from goal, they send everyone up. They roll it short and the cross is charged down.

  8. CLOSE!published at 10 mins

    Sheffield United 0-0 Newcastle

Good movement again from Ollie Burke, he's looking sharp. He finds John Lundstram back on the edge of the area and his low curler is always a yard or two wide.

  9. Postpublished at 9 mins

    Sheffield United 0-0 Newcastle

Better! The Blades keep the ball for an age, lots of interchanging and eventually Ollie Burke finds space just inside the area. He beats his man and stands up a dangerous cross but it's well headed away by Federico Fernandez.

  10. Postpublished at 7 mins

    Sheffield United 0-0 Newcastle

It's scrappy stuff. Two sides low on confidence as Ryan Fraser miscontrols a throw-in at his feet. Basics.

Ben Osborn's low cross is cut out and from the corner there's a momentary hesisation in the Newcastle lines. They just about get it clear though.

  12. Postpublished at 4 mins

    Sheffield United 0-0 Newcastle

Callum Wilson's sharp feet win a free-kick wide right, a chance for Newcastle to send the big men forwards. But it comes to nothing. Pretty low-key start.

Newcastle have been getting results but performances haven't been good enough. Questions have been asked and, with the size of the club, I understand that.

    Sheffield United 0-0 Newcastle

Callum Wilson gets a ticking off from the ref for standing in the way of Aaron Ramsdale's clearance. It's one of those rules that I still don't really know. What is a striker allowed to do there? Wilson didn't move.

Some rousing words from John Fleck in the Blades huddle - and we're off!

Kyle: Years ago when Derby needed a 1st win of the season along came Newcastle they won 1-0 in an awful game lit up by a stunning goal from Kenny Miller. I can see lightning striking twice tonight. Sheffield United have a great chance. Who will be their Miller?

The Blades' win in the FA Cup was against League One opposition [Bristol Rovers] and the pressure was on them. You can imagine the frustration this season so far. But they managed to score three - they really showed good character. Just smiles on faces at finally getting a result.

Will it give them the confidence? It will have helped them going into tonight's game.

The pressure is intensifying for Newcastle. They've had a real bad run of fixtures. Steve Bruce is very seasoned... we have to understand the job he's done regarding the ownership. They are now starting to look over their shoulder.

Almost time to get the players out at the Lane. Some last-minute pitch forking going on but the surface looks immaculate. A far cry from last night!
