  2. 'This represents a welcome change'

    Burnley 0-1 Man Utd

    Simon Stone

    BBC Sport at Turf Moor

Ten years ago, if someone had said Manchester United supporters would be celebrating being top of the Premier League, they wouldn’t have been believed.

Three months ago, if someone had said they would be top now, they would have received a shake of the head.

Yet, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his squad deserve credit. After a woeful home defeat by Arsenal, they have collected 29 points from a possible 33 and deserve their place at the summit.

Solskjaer will not get carried away. Sunday’s opponents Liverpool and a Manchester City side that has found its winning groove have shown over the past few seasons they are rivals of the highest quality.

But for a club that has fallen so far from its peak – a second top four finish in a row would be a post-Ferguson first – being back at the head of affairs represents a welcome change.

And with a squad arguably deeper than anyone else’s, if maybe not the absolute highest quality, in a season as squeezed as this one, don’t completely disregard title 21 in 2021.

  3. Post update

    Burnley 0-1 Man Utd

Manchester United have kept their first away clean sheet of the season in the Premier League, conceding 11 goals in their previous seven matches on the road in this campaign.

Burnley failed to land a single shot on target - the second time they’ve not found the target in a Premier League game this season, the other against Chelsea in October.

  5. 'VAR sparked us into life'

    Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to BBC Sport: "I'm very pleased of course. Any time you get three points you are happy. We had to dig in and earn it and we did.

"Patience and having more composure was the key. We weren't great in the first half hour and then the VAR sparked us into life. We were too hot headed at times, Harry Maguire's goal was perfectly good and I understand the lads being angry but I had to calm them down at half-time.

"I've not seen the fouls but it must be right, the referee went over to look at it. The disallowed goal - that's a mistake, we have to be honest.

"The goal was top, great execution and style. Paul Pogba really played well tonight. It would have been easier for us, we should have got the second goal but we don't do it the easy way.

"We feel very confident going into games. Away from home we have really done well. We have to believe in ourselves and we do. We've done a great job, it's good times. It's a test against the champions who have been fantastic, that's a great test for us."

  6. 'We're seeing the best of Pogba at the moment'

    FT: Burnley 0-1 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer talking to Sky Sports: "When you get three points in the Premier League it makes you smile. It was a hard-fought three points, it always is up here."

On VAR decisions: "I've not watched any of the decisions so I can't really say. Might've been a foul by Luke [Shaw] apparently so that's probably the right decision, definitely not a foul for Harry [Maguire] for his goal. If you can't jump and head it in like this, I don't believe that's anywhere near a foul. Delighted with the response after a bit of a tough first half hour."

On half-time team talk: "You've got to calm them down at half-time because emotions are running high because they disagree with the things that happen out there so we have to take back control and we played really well in the second half and we held out at the end.

"Burnley are so well organised and there's not many spaces but we did look at some of them - great cross for the goal, very well executed finish. We could've had a few more to calm the nerves but we did it the hard way."

On Paul Pogba's goal: "I've always said Paul [Pogba] is a big player for us, he's a good character in the dressing room, he's someone the lads look to, he's a world champion. We're seeing the best of Paul at the moment - he's been injured and he's had Covid so it's natural to need to get back to fitness after that."

On playing Liverpool at the weekend: "Of course we know we're going to the champions they've had an unbelievable three seasons so we're ready for it. But we're ready and we're excited, we're hungry for it and it's a test of character and quality again. We're in a good position going into it."

  7. 'We have to keep calm, now it is the big moment'

    Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

    Manchester United

Manchester United goalscorer Paul Pogba to BBC Sport: "The pass was top, I had the freedom to go and shoot, I'm really happy with the goal.

"We knew if we win we would be top of the league when we play Liverpool. We have to keep calm, now it is the big moment. We will see what is going to happen.

"It will be a beautiful game for everyone. A big game coming up so let's get ready for it."

  8. 'Pope would save it otherwise'

    Burnley 0-1 Man Utd

    Burnley

Burnley manager Sean Dyche to Match of the Day: "It was a decent performance against a top side on decent form. We are growing into our season. Performances and results have improved.

"I'm a fan of VAR, it will streamline over time but that's a tricky one with incidents at both ends. He had to look at both. We want it to be quicker but on that one it's not easy. It was a foul by Luke Shaw, the modern game would suggest you are in trouble with that one.

"United came out second half with more tempo and they have spells when they will do that. They scored a very good goal via a deflection and Pope would save it otherwise. The reaction was terrific.

"These players give everything and you can see that at the end when we were creating chances and half chances.

"We had a tough start and we've calmed that down. It bodes well but we have to maintain it."

  9. Post update

    Wolves 1-2 Everton

Everton have won seven of their last 10 away Premier League games (D1 L2), as many victories as they enjoyed in their previous 28 on the road (D5 L16).

  10. 'We played the game we planned'

    Wolves 1-2 Everton

    Everton

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti, speaking to BBC Sport: "We knew this would be a difficult game to play here.

"We played the game we had planned. We avoided to concede counter-attacks and tried to find the chance to be clinical when the opportunity came.

"We had a different approach without Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin. We played more to attack the flanks with Iwobi and Digne and it worked well because the first goal was a fantastic combination.

"Michael Keane is unbelievable with his head. His goal helped us to stay in a good position in the table.

"We perform better away because at home we don't have the support of our fans at the moment, which is really important. When we played with 2,000 of our supporters against Chelsea we won."

  11. Post update

A few of you on Twitter seem to be suggesting the government should end the Premier League season right now. I wonder why!

  12. 'We are exactly where we belong'

    Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

    Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic: "It was exactly what we expected and we did a great job and deserved the points. We are top of the table and we are happy.

"We are exactly where we belong. Burnley are a good side and to win here is not easy.

"We know that we go game by game. This one was a final and now we focus on the next one in the same way against Liverpool."

  13. 'We adapted well'

    Wolves 1-2 Everton

    Everton

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti, speaking to Sky Sports: "If you win here you have to have a good performance. We had a good game. The game was in the balance, we won thanks to Michael Keane, who scored a fantastic goal.

"The players adapted really well. The position of James Rodriguez and Gylfi Sigurdsson in front was really good. We adapted well to the characteristics of our players.

"Without Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin it is more difficult to score but I think to be focussed defensively enabled us to have a good game."

Players back for weekend? "Richarlison for sure, Calvert-Lewin I don't think so."

  14. 'We are not too down'

    Burnley 0-1 Man Utd

    Burnley

Burnley defender James Tarkowski: "The result is disappointing but we caused them a lot of problems. We had some great chances at the end and should have put one away.

"We are not far away. We are not too down."

  15. 'We got the result we wanted in the end'

    FT: Burnley 0-1 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United's goal scorer Paul Pogba speaking to Sky Sports: "We know that the game today was very hard, very difficult and obviously we wanted to win. We know it's not easy to play here. We got the three points and we're happy for that but there's still a long way and now we focus again until the end of the season."

On distraction of VAR decisions: "Obviously it's hard but you have to be professional and we know it wasn't going to be easy with the decision of the referee which I didn't agree with. But I'm not the boss on the pitch so we just have to keep calm and keep focused and of course we scored and won the game."

On Harry Maguire's disallowed goal: "It was a goal for sure - I don't know what happened. It was a beautiful goal and the referee decided that it was not. It was a strange decision but we got the result we wanted so we're happy."

On being patient throughout the match: "You can see that the game was going both ways, it's very hard to play here. They have a style of play, very strong and we knew it would be difficult. We had to keep our heads calm and just focus on ourselves and hope the goal would come and it did come. It was a great performance from everyone, good focus.

"Always happy when I win - today we won and I'm happy we play well. Still a long way to go and we have big games to go so we have to focus on that."

  16. Post update

    Wolves 1-2 Everton

Lucas Digne has now made 16 assists in the Premier League for Everton. Since the start of the 2018-19 season, the only defenders with more are Liverpool pair Andy Robertson (28) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (27).

  17. Post update

    Wolves 1-2 Everton

Wolves have lost five of their last eight Premier League games (W1 D2), after losing just one of the seven before that (W4 D2).

  18. Nuno 'very worried' about poor form

    Wolves 1-2 Everton

    Wolves

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo, speaking to BBC Sport: "It was small details. First half I think we played a good game and in the second half both sides were very organised, it was just the small detail that we should do better - focus inside the box. That detail cost us the game.

"We got a good goal and in the first half I think we had more of the ball and played better but second half was very tight. Both teams were very organised and very compact. The moment we pushed to go for the game we conceded the goal."

How worried about the this run of form are you? "Very worried. It is something we know we need to improve but at the same time aware of what is happening and what we have to do for the future."

  19. 'We knew it would take something special'

    Wolves 1-2 Everton

    Wolves

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo, speaking to Sky Sports when asked what went wrong for his side: "Details. Details. Details. It is happening to us, we have to improve set pieces focus.

"It was hard because they were very organised, very compact and it required patience. Tough but I think we did well.

"Both teams in the second half didn't have too many chances. Very organised and we knew it would require something special. As the game went by we started losing some situations in the offensive part.

"It is up to us to find solutions. The boys tried hard. We have to acknowledge this is not the right moment to make mistakes. Hopefully we will have players again joining the group that will make us stronger."

  20. Post update

    Burnley 0-1 Man Utd

The last one they lost was at Anfield - where they go on Sunday - when Liverpool beat them 2-0 on 19 January 2020.
