Here we are talking about a club with the possibility of winning a 12th consecutive trophy and the manager might get some respite because of it. That's mind-boggling. It might only be a small number of fans complaining, but that small number can multiply in people's minds

  2. Neilson backs players as he aims for cup reacquaintancepublished at 13:56 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

Celtic v Heart of Midlothian (14:15)

There's a sizeable list of managers who have won the Scottish Cup as a player - Neil Lennon is on it - but no man outside Celtic and Rangers has done it.

Robbie Neilson already has a winners' medal from the 2006 final; a penalty shoot-out win against Gretna (remember them?).

Can the Hearts boss pick up a second today?

"It's all about what the players do. If I become a quiz question on the back of what they do, then great," was his typically low-key response when interviewed earlier this week by Tom English.

  3. Will another trophy be enough for Lennon?published at 13:53 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

Celtic v Heart of Midlothian (14:15)

Neil Lennon was famously confirmed as Celtic manager for the second time in the showers at Hampden after that win over Hearts in 2019, having succeeded Brendan Rodgers on a temporary basis mid-season.

A quadruple treble would be some achievement, but all is not well at Celtic and Lennon has been under intense pressure after a dip in form which has seen them slip a long way behind Rangers in the league race.

A win today would go some way to silencing critics and rebuilding team confidence, but it might not be enough to save Lennon if Rangers continue to pull away.

  4. Quadruple treble is target for Celticpublished at 13:50 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

Celtic v Heart of Midlothian (14:15)

And that leads us to the possibility of a quadruple treble today.

Yes, Celtic can make it 12 domestic trophies in a row if they are successful.

No one else has picked up any major silverware since Hibernian got their mitts on this cup in 2016.

We don't need to worry about a quintuple treble though, since Celtic have been toppled out of this season's League Cup.

  5. Celtic hit back to break Hearts last timepublished at 13:47 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

Celtic v Heart of Midlothian (14:15)

That's our cue for a quick reminder of what happened in the last Scottish Cup final...

Hearts scored first at Hampden on 25 May 2019, with Ryan Edwards shooting the underdogs in front early in the second half.

However, Odsonne Edouard equalised from the penalty spot before coolly stroking in the winner.

That secured a historic treble of domestic trophies for Celtic for the third consecutive season.

We are just about half an hour away from reaching the climax of a tournament that started in August 2019.

Sixteen months have passed, making it the longest-ever Scottish Cup to be played to a conclusion.

And we end up with the same final as last time!

Not that Shane Duffy expected things to be easy up here, but I think he thought it might be easier. But I know of top players who have found it difficult to adapt to everything - the surrounds, the pace of the game. I've worked with him with Republic of Ireland and there's games when he has been phenomenal and he's definitely a better player than he's shown up here

  10. Celtic aim for big four-oh, Hearts seek cloud ninepublished at 13:31 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

Celtic v Heart of Midlothian (14:15)

Celtic are the most successful side in the history of the Scottish Cup. A win today would be their 40th.

Hearts sit fourth on that list, having lifted the trophy eight times. Their most recent triumph came in 2012 and it was a memorable one; thrashing Edinburgh rivals Hibs 5-1.

Hearts have been runners-up on seven occasions, while Celtic have been second best 18 times but have not lost a final since 2002.

Celtic: Hazard, Ajer, Jullien, Duffy, Taylor, Brown, McGregor, Turnbull, Christie, Elyounoussi, Edouard.

Substitutes: Barkas, Bitton, Soro, Griffiths, Klimala, Johnston, Frimpong, Laxalt.

Heart of Midlothian: Gordon, M Smith, Halkett, Berra, Kingsley, Walker, Halliday, Irving, White, Naismith, Boyce.

Substitutes: Stewart, Haring, Lee, Roberts, Wighton, Frear, Popescu, Ginnelly, Henderson.

  13. Halliday replaces Lee for Heartspublished at 13:21 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

Celtic v Heart of Midlothian (14:15)

Hearts are sitting pretty at the top of the Championship, must be firm favourites for a swift return to the top flight, and manager Robbie Neilson makes only one change to the team that thumped Queen of the South 6-1 last time out.

Former Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday returns, with Olly Lee dropping to the bench.

It means that exciting on-loan Preston North End winger Josh Ginnelly also has to make do with a place among the substitutes again despite coming off the bench to score last weekend on his return from injury.

  14. Brown & Christie return for Celticpublished at 13:15 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

Celtic v Heart of Midlothian (14:15)

Well, the speculation about whether Scott Brown will start can end now.

The Celtic captain is restored to the holding role in midfield after being rested for two games, with Ismaila Soro dropping to the bench despite two impressive first starts for the Ivorian.

Scotland midfielder Ryan Christie also returns to the starting line-up in place of flying wide man Jeremie Frimpong, who can also probably feel a little aggrieved to find himself on the bench.

It means 22-year-old Conor Hazard gets a vote of confidence in goal and David Turnbull continues in the central role in which he has impressed.

  15. Road to Hampden: Celtic part IIpublished at 13:09 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

Celtic v Heart of Midlothian (14:15)

Celtic's 35th consecutive domestic cup win was secured when Aberdeen were eased aside in the semi-final at Hampden.

First-half goals from Ryan Christie and Mohamed Elyounoussi were enough to get the job done and set up yet another final.

  16. Road to Hampden: Hearts part IIpublished at 13:06 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

Celtic v Heart of Midlothian (14:15)

Having only just resumed playing after a delayed start to the Championship, Hearts went into their semi-final with Edinburgh rivals Hibs as big underdogs.

However, although Christian Doidge cancelled out Craig Wighton's 60th-minute opener, Hearts won the Edinburgh derby in dramatic style through Liam Boyce's extra-time penalty kick - soon after a Hibs spot-kick had crashed against the crossbar.

Celtic v Heart of Midlothian (14:15)

It was like an old-style Glasgow Cup in the early rounds for the holders. First, they eased aside Championship hosts Partick Thistle 2-1, then doused League 1 side Clyde's hopes of repeating the upset of 13 years earlier with a 3-0 success in Cumbernauld.

Quarter-final hosts St Johnstone proved more stubborn until Ryan Christie's late free-kick in Perth.

Hearts started the competition in the Premiership under Daniel Stendel but take to the field in the second tier under Robbie Neilson.

A 5-0 thumping of Airdrieonians was their first win on Stendel's watch and was followed by a 1-0 grind away to another League 1 side, Falkirk. Then came perhaps the highlight of a disappointing season as the now-departed Oliver Bozanic scored the only goal in a win over Rangers.

Travelling to a football match you can't get into is about as unnecessary as unnecessary travel can get, never mind the issues with social distancing, yet quite a few Celtic supporters have turned up at Hampden to greet their team.

  20. 'Turnbull has to start' - Stewartpublished at 12:35 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

Celtic v Heart of Midlothian (14:15)

    Michael Stewart
    Sportscene analysis

Two major positives for Celtic in last weekend's win against Kilmarnock were the performance of David Turnbull and the return of Mikey Johnston from long-term injury.

Johnston gives them something they don't have, which is raw pace combined with the ability to drop the shoulder and go past players. Pace frightens teams and gives you the ability to counter at speed.

Turnbull was excellent again, having got a goal and assist in the 3-2 win against Lille. He always gets in positions to shoot, and invariably hits the target.

You can see how he'll continue to create and score for Celtic, and his delivery at set-pieces is a big threat, with Christopher Jullien and Shane Duffy both benefitting from his corners in recent games. I expect Scott Brown to come back in to the side, but Turnbull also has to start.
