Gareth Southgate has described tonight's game in Budapest as "pivotal" in his side's hopes of qualifying automatically for the World Cup finals in Qatar next winter. With good reason.

Hungary currently sit second behind England in Group I, two points worse off. They may have finished bottom of their group at Euro 2020, but they did not go quietly in what was the toughest first assignment in the tournament.

Drawn with World Cup holders France, then reigning European champions Portugal and Germany, Hungary gave each of them a decent game. They almost snuck through too before a late German goal to secure a 2-2 draw in the final group game finally ended their hopes.

With a noisy, partisan crowd behind them, Hungary will be a big test for Southgate's lads tonight.

Hungarian football journalist Matyas Szeli on BBC Radio 5 Live: "The Euros gave us huge confidence in a tough group. Now we have Dominik Szoboszlai back.

"Szoboszlai came onto the scene and we thought he would be a game-changer for us, he is only 20. He has a strong mentality, is skilled and is lethal from free-kicks. He is a quality player and very brave. An aggressive footballer.

"We are still realistic and are hopeful we can achieve something against England. It is a mentality change going to, 'England are strong but maybe we can get something out of this game'.

"At the begin I thought we could be third but after the Euros and the draw against Poland it will be crucial who will be second. If we win this game tonight we might have a great chance of getting in ahead of Poland.

"The managers and players stressed they should not do anything inappropriate (during the knee). I am a bit sceptical but I am trusting that as hosts we will be respectful."

The atmosphere is very pleasant considering the less-warm welcome the England players got when they came out to warm up.

The ultras are right behind the goal and made their feelings and voices known.

Hungary were sanctioned at the Euros and we wondered what reaction they would get - the chant was "Hun-ga-ry".

There are England fans here, even though they aren't in team colours tonight.

I sense from Gareth Southgate that there is a concern there this week.

Even though the team achieved a great deal, they wanted to remind the squad of the good things they did in the summer, but it ended on a bad feeling.

Those of us who were there that night, it will have had an impact especially the players who were at the centre of it.

The challenge this week is to try and get the players to move on and forget that.

In response to questions about the potential for racism and homophobia tonight in Budapest, Gareth Southgate says England should "get its own house in order" before criticising others for their behaviour.

Southgate says England must learn from the Euro 2020 final, when ticketless fans broke in to Wembley.

"We've got our own problems. I think we sort ourselves out first," he said.

Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka were all racially abused on social media after missing penalties in the shootout defeat to Italy on 11 July.

"We're prepared for what comes in Hungary but our players experienced difficult things, players' families experienced difficult things in the final," Southgate said.

"So, I never like it when we look outside when we've not got our own house in order."

Inevitably, the subjects of racism and homophobia have raised their ugly heads this week. Back in July, Hungary were ordered to play their next three home games behind closed doors after Uefa found their supporters guilty of discriminatory behaviour during Euro 2020.

Charges relating to racism and other discriminatory conduct were laid after each of Hungary's group games against Portugal, France and Germany in June.

Home fans will be in attendance for tonight's game, though, as the game is under Fifa jurisdiction.

Please let tonight happen without any sort of repeat.

Don't lose these games and you are through. This is it, six teams qualifying process? It is not, it is three.

We have already beaten Poland and if you don't lose to these two teams away from home they are home and hosed.

They have already been given nine points and it is an important week for England but one they will take confidence from.

There have only been two Premier League games so you cannot really chop and change. The team reached a final so it does pick it self.

This is the hardest group game and you have to pick your strongest team.

If things had gone Harry Kane's way this summer, that England front three would also be Manchester City's this season.

It's going to be very interesting to see what Grealish brings to the occasion. We only got glimpses of his clear talent in the Euros. Time to show why you're worth £100m Jacky boy.

Some interesting matches in that little lot.

Sweden's game against Spain is second versus first in qualifying Group B, European champions Italy at home against Bulgaria, while Germany have some making up to do after the home loss to North Macedonia and that shoddy Euro 2020 campaign.

The Germans also have a new coach in place - Hansi Flick succeeding Joachim Low.

And then there's Northern Ireland, who desperately need a result in Lithuania.

This is not entirely the squad that took on the Euros. Injuries have taken away a few for starters.

Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold is back to provide pace and crossing ability from right-back. He has been superb so far in the early stages of this season, silencing the criticism and concern about his form from the previous campaign.

There is also a new face in the attacking group - Leeds United forward Patrick Bamford finally getting his long-mooted chance at international level. The 27-year-old scored 17 Premier League goals last season and got off the mark this campaign in Sunday's 1-1 draw at Burnley.

Bamford was apparently the first player in the squad to report for training this week. Keen as mustard.

The England players are soaking up the atmosphere out on the pitch in Budapest. They're expecting 60,000 home fans there for the game. The ones there already have let those England players know how they feel already.

The most notable bit of team news for Hungary is the return of arguably their best player - RB Leipzig midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai.

The talented 20-year-old missed Euro 2020 through injury.

The big news for England is that £100m Jack Grealish, the most expensive English player of all time, starts in Budapest.

Grealish replaces Atletico Madrid full-back Kieran Trippier in the only change from the side that started the European Championship final 53 days ago.

It looks like a change of system for the Three Lions too, from a 5-3-2 to a 4-3-3, with the Manchester City man part of a three-pronged attack with Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling.

The rest is as you'd expect, including John Stones - winning his 50th cap - as Harry Maguire's centre-back partner. Stones has yet to start a game for Man City this season.

New boy Patrick Bamford is on the bench along with the recalled Trent Alexander-Arnold.
