An interesting subplot tonight - Lionel Messi could become the highest-scoring South American footballer if he bags a couple of goals.

One goal and he will move level with Pele on 77, two and he will surpass the Brazil legend.

An added bit of intrigue - especially given it will be against Brazil he takes the record, should he grab a couple of goals.

Romelu Lukaku marks his 100th Belgium cap with his 67th international goal.

It's a lovely first-time finish from the edge of the box.

One more goal would see him break into the top 25 international goalscorers ever in men's football.

Romelu Lukaku is a legend of Belgian football, his statistics are fantastic. He will play his 100th international match and I think that should be a big party. Sometimes we take for granted what we have. But players like Romelu are rare and they should be enjoyed

  5. Argentina given scare before kick offpublished at 19:54 British Summer Time 5 September 2021

    Brazil v Argentina (20:00 BST)

There's always a bit of spice when Brazil play Argentina but even more so in the build up to this one.

Just hours before kick-off, Brazil's health regulator Anvisa sought the immediate isolation of four Argentina players who had spent time in the UK over the previous 14 days.

Although it did not name the four, the players with English Premier League clubs are Emiliano Buendia and Emiliano Martinez of Aston Villa and Giovani lo Celso and Cristian Romero of Tottenham Hotspur.

However, it appears that the issue has been sorted, with Conmebol weighing in as three of those players are starting.

Brazil: Weverton; Danilo, Militia, Verisimo, Alex Sandro; Ribeiro, Casemiro, Gerson, Paqueta; Neymar, Gabigol

Argentina: Emiliano Martínez; Montiel, Romero, Otamendi, Acuña; Di María, De Paul, Paredes, Lo Celso, Messi, Lautaro Martínez

It may surprise you to know Armenia v Germany is a top-of-the-table clash. It may surprise you even more to know it's Armenia who are top.

The visitors to Stuttgart are unbeaten on 10 points from four games, one point above the Germans.

This is Hansi Flick's first home game as Germany boss after a 2-0 win over Liechtenstein the other day.

Romania, only three points behind Germany, host Liechtenstein.

    Spain 0-0 Georgia

    Luis EnriqueImage source, Reuters

Spain boss Luis Enrique says he is still "optimistic" despite guiding the country to their first World Cup qualifying defeat in 28 years.

Sweden, who beat Enrique's side 2-1, are two points clear of Spain at the top, with a game in hand, leaving a real prospect of La Roja needing the World Cup play-offs.

"I've watched the game back, we've gone into depth with the analysis and I'm more optimistic," Enrique said.

"We don't have things in our own hands in order to finish top of the group come November, but we have qualification for the next World Cup in our own hands even if Sweden top the group.

"If we win the two play-off games then we would qualify. You need to overcome difficulties, and that's what we're working on."

Kosovo play Greece in the day's other game.

  10. Italy can break European record tonightpublished at 19:47 British Summer Time 5 September 2021

    Switzerland 0-0 Italy

Italy are four points clear of Italy at the top of the group - but Switzerland have two games in hand.

The Azzurri beat the Swiss 3-0 at Euro 2020 on their way to winning the tournament.

The Swiss have a new manager since then, with Murat Yakin taking charge.

Roberto Mancini's side will break the European record today if they don't lose.

They are unbeaten in 35 games now, level with Spain's old landmark from February 2007 to June 2009.

    Brazil v Argentina (20:00 BST)

We will also be bringing you regular updates from Sao Paulo as Brazil face Argentina in World Cup qualifying.

Both sides look well placed to qualify for Qatar, sitting in the top two. Brazil have won all seven games, while Argentina are unbeaten in 21 games in all competitions.

That includes the Copa America final where they beat Brazil.

Of Europe's quarantine rules, which have denied both teams the ability to call up some players, Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni said: "It can’t go on like this.

"These games are being played because it was very tight and the decision was last minute but they need to take a decision for the next time. You can’t compete like this."
