Overall it has been a tremendous performance from Northern Ireland so far, one I didn't expect. The only thing missing has been a goal. We have put their back four under pressure and if we keep plugging away the chances will come. I'm delighted with how we are playing - Ali McCann has been great in the middle of the park and Lavery and Washington are causing problems up front.

There goes the half-time whistle. I'm off for a lie down.

A breathless, brilliant half of football - but we're still waiting for the first goal.

  5. CLOSE!published at 20:27 British Summer Time 8 September 2021

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Switzerland

That's Switzerland's first chance from open play.

Frei whips in a teasing delivery and Manuel Akanji head towards goal. Peacock-Farrell gets a hand to it but it falls to the feet of Nico Elvedi, who pokes wide on the stretch.

    That was a let off!

  6. 'A shocking penalty'published at 20:23 British Summer Time 8 September 2021

    Quote Message

It was a shocking penalty by Seferovic as it was hit straight at Peacock-Farrell - but he still has to save it. We didn't deserve to go behind but we got off the hook there.

  8. GREAT SAVE!published at 20:19 British Summer Time 8 September 2021
    Breaking

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Switzerland

IT'S SAVED! BAILEY PEACOCK-FARRELL WILL NOT BE BEATEN!

It's a dreadful penalty from Seferovic, who hits it low to the keeper's right and Peacock-Farrell is there to meet it and push it away.

That's two penalty saves in as many matches. What a man!

  9. PENALTYpublished at 20:17 British Summer Time 8 September 2021

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Switzerland

You have to be kidding... Switzerland have been awarded a penalty!

A ball is played in and Michael Smith collides with Ruben Vargas. You've seen them given.

Haris Seferovic is going to take it...

  10. Postpublished at 20:17 British Summer Time 8 September 2021

Craig Cathcart has been superb so far. Patrolling his area and heading every ball away.

    You love to see it.

It's when Northern Ireland fans do "The Bouncy" that you know they are really back.

A minute before they were letting the Irish FA know their thoughts on the ticketing structure, but then they broke into the song that always takes the atmosphere up even higher.

And the fans in the stands are getting plenty of encouragement from the players on the pitch as, after a dodgy enough opening five minutes, Northern Ireland have looked confident and assured against the well-fancied Swiss.

Lavery has not stopped moving and Steven Davis is his usual classy self in the middle.

More the same will be the message from manager Ian Baraclough.

  12. Postpublished at 20:15 British Summer Time 8 September 2021

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Switzerland

Back in the Mapei Stadium, Giacomo Raspadori (What a name, by the way!) grabs his second of the game for Italy, and Moise Kean then decides he wants more and soon nets number four.

There's only 30 minutes on the clock. This could be a long night for Lithuania...

  13. 'A bit of a lull'published at 20:13 British Summer Time 8 September 2021

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Switzerland

    John O'Neill
Former Northern Ireland defender on BBC Radio Ulster

    Quote Message

We have had a little bit of a lull which is not surprising after 25 minutes almost flat out. Switzerland are struggling to find anyone as the Northern Ireland back three are marking so tightly.

  14. Postpublished at 20:12 British Summer Time 8 September 2021

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Switzerland

Steven Davis puts in a brilliant tackle then runs the length of the pitch to play Lavery in.

Play is brought back for a push, but Davis left everyone, bar Lavery, in his dust. He's 36!

  15. YELLOW CARDpublished at 20:10 British Summer Time 8 September 2021

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Switzerland

Michael Smith is in the book now.

He's caught Denis Zakaria when stretching for the ball. That's a fair call and the Swiss midfielder is still down.

Oh, in a surprising twist there's a waterbreak.

It's Northern Ireland in September for goodness sake...it's not baltic but you haven't exactly been slapping the sun cream on today either.

  16. Qarabag all over again - nearlypublished at 20:06 British Summer Time 8 September 2021

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Switzerland

    Mark Sterling
BBC Sport NI at Windsor Park

What a goal that would have been from Shayne Lavery.

He absolutely roasted two defenders for pace - having given them almost a 10-yard start - before holding off another as he got in on goal. He was just off balance as he went to shoot and it went inches wide.

Two summers ago he scored a goal for Linfield with a run very similar to that into that net in this stadium, against Qarabag in the Europa League. This run was remarkably similar, just a shame the finish wasn't the same.

One thing you can be sure of with the Blackpool striker, though, is that he will not be deterred. He'll be back for more - and the Swiss defence won't like it.

It's all Northern Ireland so far but they just can't find that final ball.

Michael Smith has just sent a long throw in so far it's landed in Lurgan.

  19. 'Best NI start to a game for some time'published at 20:02 British Summer Time 8 September 2021

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Switzerland

    John O'Neill
Former Northern Ireland defender on BBC Radio Ulster

    Quote Message

I'm delighted with the start Northern Ireland have made given the quality of the players they are missing. They have been tight at the back and Lavery is a real livewire up front. This is the best start to a game I've seen from Northern Ireland for some time.

  20. YELLOW CARDpublished at 20:01 British Summer Time 8 September 2021

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Switzerland

Fabian Frei picks up the first yellow card of the game for diving in on Jordan Thompson.
