    Brilliant by Corey Blackett-Taylor.

He turns his man on the left for Tranmere and drives towards goal, drops the shoulder, goes to the line and from an acute angle rifles the shot at Lee Burge.

Keith Hill stalks the touchline. He'll be really happy with the way Tranmere have responded to conceding. This is by no means over.

The corner from Kaiyne Woolery is cleared by Charlie Wyke for Sunderland, but Tranmere recycle.

There are plenty of nerves as the corner comes in but Lee Burge gathers.

    Sunderland 1-0 Tranmere

    Danger for Sunderland.

Kaiyne Woolery gets to the byline and cuts back but it's loose, and then a cross from the right is headed behind by Max Power.

Tranmere continue to push, and a volley from George Ray is bravely blocked by Luke O'Nien.

Still they press, another cross from Corey Blackett-Taylor is cleared. Another wave, David Nugent wins a corner after his cross is blocked.

  6. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 65 mins

Paul Lewis and Danny Lloyd come off, with the experienced David Nugent and Corey Blackett-Taylor coming on. Tranmere move.

  7. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 62 mins

    Sunderland 1-0 Tranmere

Tranmere almost need to reset now. No need to panic. Still a good half hour to go.

Sunderland make a change. Jack Diamond replaces Chris Maguire.

Rovers will shuffle the pack too. In a minute.

Sunderland starting to purr now. Lyndon Gooch gets the ball on the right and curls in a cross which is half-cleared, but Chris Maguire can't finish off.

GOAL: Sunderland 1-0 Tranmerepublished at 57 mins

    Lyndon Gooch

Who will provide the spark? I'll tell you who. Aiden McGeady.

What a pass this is. Lyndon Gooch breaks the deadlock for Sunderland with a cool finish but the pass is outstanding.

McGeady picks it up centre-field in his own half, just shy of the centre circle and looks up, threads a dagger-like radar-guided peach of a pass through the middle of the Rovers defence which leaves USA international Gooch all on his own.

Scott Davies has to come to meet him but Gooch unerringly belts it beyond him and into the back of the net.

    GAMEBREAKER.

    Sunderland 0-0 Tranmere

Sunderland have been more positive in the past few minutes but Tranmere continue to pose a problem on the break.

One looping ball through almost tees up Danny Lloyd but it's nudged away by Luke O'Nien.

Who can provide the spark here? It continues to simmer with promise rather than truly come to the boil.

  11. Postpublished at 54 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Tranmere

Aiden McGeady tries to shuffle his way into a shooting position but Tranmere set their shape really well to close down the space.

They sit in until the ball is secured and then send bodies flooding through in support.

It is a really smart system from Tranmere.

  12. Postpublished at 51 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Tranmere

More good work from Aiden McGeady and a chance for Sunderland.

Danny Lloyd gave away possession and Conor McLauchlin gave the ball to the winger.

He whizzed a ball in but Charlie Wyke couldn't connect.

  13. Postpublished at 51 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Tranmere

Aiden McGeady gets a shot away for Sunderland after shimmying on the edge of the box, but Tranmere have numbers to block.

  14. GREAT SAVE!published at 49 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Tranmere

Superb break by Tranmere to open the field up and get Otis Khan in down the right, and after he wriggled his way into the box, the left foot shot is beaten away by Lee Burge.

Great ball by Danny Lloyd to put him in.

  15. Postpublished at 48 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Tranmere

Tranmere are gifted possession by Sunderland and look to make the most of it.

However, the Black Cats shut down the space and the ball goes all the way back to Scott Davies in goal.

It feels like the team that can calm this game down and can set the pace, will win it.

It's too scattergun and disjointed at the moment.

  16. KICK-OFFpublished at 45 mins

Sunderland were out just before Tranmere for the second half..

The Black Cats kick us off.

I don't envisage that the wrong result today will result in the same fate for Lee Johnson or Keith Hill, which befell Kenny Jackett this morning.

The Portsmouth boss missed the chance to see his side retain the EFL Trophy in yesterday's final, and it cost him his job.

That said, Tranmere have won 12 games in 2021, a number only bettered in the top four divisions by Manchester City.

    Exalted company.

Charlie Wyke has 16 goals in 19 games in 2021. Some strike rate.

However, he's not been given chance to really have a crack, with Tranmere largely cutting out the supply line to Aiden McGeady - Wyke's usual source.

It's not lost on me that we've had three halves and an extra-time of two days of EFL Trophy finals without a single goal.

    Just one would be nice.
