For Swansea today offers both a chance to win promotion back to the Premier League after three seasons and to gain revenge on the team who put the out of last season's play-offs.

The Swans took a 1-0 advantage into their second leg at Griffin Park, the last competitive game to be played at Brentford's old ground, but fell to a 3-1 defeat to lose 3-2 on aggregate.

On-loan Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster, who had starred with 11 goals in 22 appearances was sold on to Sheffield United, but the Swans, much like the Bees, pretty much continued from where they had left off last season.

A 1-0 win at Luton on 13 March put them level on points with second-placed Watford, with a game in hand, but they then lost the subsequent four matches to drop away from automatic promotion contention.

Despite winning just three of the final 11 games in the regular season they managed their play-off semi-final against Barnsley well, winning 1-0 at Oakwell and drawing 1-1 at the Liberty Stadium in the return leg.

Thumbs up if you've scored 31 league goals this season

Brentford's 2019-20 season ended under the arch at Wembley on 4 August 2020, one year and one day after it had begun.

The Bees fell to a 2-1 defeat by London rivals Fulham to extend their unsuccessful play-off run to no promotions from nine attempts.

They then lost star forwards Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahma to Aston Villa and West Ham respectively but the arrival of the prolific Ivan Toney (pictured above) from Peterborough offset those departures and they spent the whole season challenging in the top six.

A 1-0 win over Blackburn on 12 March saw them move back up to second but thereafter their automatic promotion bid faded badly as they drew six of the following seven games.

They ended the campaign with four successive wins to finish third and, despite losing the first leg of their play-off semi-final at Bournemouth 1-0, saw off the Cherries 3-2 on aggregate after a raucous 3-1 win at the Brentford Community Stadium last Saturday.

It's a nerve-jangling day. The fans are slowly filtering in now.

Brentford have a painful play-off history.

I'm sure Brentford fans will not need reminding that their record in finals is... well, terrible.

That's got to change at some point though surely?

I know it's become something of a cliche but how good is it to see fans back at games?

I was lucky enough to attend the Barnsley v Swansea play-off semi-final at Oakwell and even with just 4,000 in the ground it was a really special occasion.

There will be 12,000 at Wembley today and then 10,000 in for the League One and Two finals on Sunday and Monday.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank embraces striker Ivan Toney after last week's play-of semi-final win over Bournemouth

After the experience of an extra-time defeat by Fulham in the play-off final last season, Brentford head coach Thomas Frank wants his side to deal with the occasion and play without fear today.

"We need to acknowledge that there will be nerves and we will all be a tiny bit more tense," the Dane told BBC Radio London.

"But it is a good thing. You raise your awareness and go into combat mode.

"For me, it is very important we do everything we can to be brave and make sure that when we look back we are not regretting anything.

"If we believe and perform well, then it is down to fine margins and a bit of help from the football Gods."

  7. Promotion would mean everything - Cooperpublished at 14:15 British Summer Time 29 May 2021

    Brentford v Swansea (15:00 BST)

    Steve CooperImage source, Rex Features

Swansea are looking to win promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs 10 years since last achieving the feat.

Brendan Rodgers led the Swans to a 4-2 win over Reading in 2011 and the south Wales side spent seven years in the top-flight before going down in 2018.

Boss Steve Cooper is in his second season in charge and has led them to the play-offs both years.

"It would mean everything," he said.

"The club has been there before, long before I was here, and that journey was a special one.

"Then it was taken away through relegation, the club has had to re-establish itself with a different identity and rebuild.

"We've got to this last game of the season and given ourselves a 50-50 chance of winning. It's something we've got to really go for."

I was here for last season's Championship final, and the scene both inside and outside Wembley is completely different to that late summer evening in August.

After a journey on a deserted tube, Olympic Way was exceptionally quiet nine months ago. With no fans allowed to see Brentford's game against Fulham, there were just a smattering of people doing a spot of shopping or popping into a coffee shop.

Today, thankfully, there will be 12,000 in attendance at Wembley, with 5,000 fans from each club.

With lockdown restrictions eased, the underground was much busier and there was a steady trickle of supporters soaking up the atmosphere outside the stadium. The slightly subdued vibes are nowhere near those of a usual play-off final, but at least some fans will be able to watch on from inside the ground today.

Brentford are aiming for a first play-off triumph in 10 attempts this afternoon, and they also have the curse of the colours to contend with.

Remarkably, no side who normally wear red-and-white striped shirts and black shorts, as Brentford do, have ever won a play-off final.

And between them, the Bees, Sunderland, Sheffield United, Exeter and Lincoln have had 16 attempts.

Swansea, meantime, will wear their turquoise and raspberry away colours today. Steve Cooper's team have won nine and drawn three of their 12 outings in the rather unusual kit this season.

Matt Price: Really wanna see Brentford promoted. They've worked so hard over the last 2 seasons, would be so much more of a breath of fresh air than yo-yo clubs like Fulham and Swansea.

Mark Campion: I fancy Swansea to win a tight game 1-0. Swans have a mean defence and I think this will be the difference today, along with the potential match winners in the side.

Not sure we can call Swansea a yo-yo club quite yet Matt but it is fair to say that Brentford would be tasting Premier League football for the first time should they get over the line today.

Former England goalkeeper Rob Green has been promoted to the Premier League through the play-offs with West Ham and Queens Park Rangers and lost a play-off final with Norwich.

The 41-year-old told BBC Radio London he used to relish these potentially life-changing matches.

"These sorts of games are fantastic. The meaning of these finals is so big," he said.

"It is peoples’ contracts, careers and livelihoods and everything all rolled into one. I loved it personally.

"You walk out onto the pitch genuinely not knowing if you'll go up. That real black-and-white nature of it can really change peoples’ lives within 90 minutes of football."
