Aston Villa v Man City (Weds, 20:15 BST)

    Manchester City

Asked if he had spoken to his players about the European Super League, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said: "No because it is not yet breathing, it is an embryo that is not yet breathing, it is just a statement.

"We are going to play the Champions League next week and try to reach the final and next year we are going to play European competition because we deserve it, we won it on the pitch.

"We did our job and after the right people have the obligation the duty to clarify as soon as possible, clarify all around the world why this teams play and the others not, Ajax with four Champions League's are not there.

"Everyone makes his own interest, the Premier League looks at his interest, and Uefa looks at his.

"This season is the most difficult one and we look for five subs but every team look for himself. Don’t say 'big six', this club in the toughest period in the world never fire one person and everyone is struggling in this situation."

    Manchester City

Pep Guardiola said he only found out about the Super League announcement a few hours before it was made on Sunday evening.

Asked if it was right he was the first person from the club to answer questions about the Super League, the Manchester City boss said: "It is an honour. I am a good spokesperson.

“Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer], Jurgen [Klopp], Mikel [Arteta], Thomas [Tuchel] – we are all in the same position. We speak six times a week about everything, from COVID-19 to the NHS.

"I would love the president from this committee to go around the world and tell us why Ajax are not in there or whether they will be."

  3. 'We do not have all of the information'published at 13:47 British Summer Time 20 April 2021

Aston Villa v Man City (Weds, 20:15 BST)

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says he "feels uncomfortable" talking about the European Super League and wants the club owners to clarify the situation.

Guardiola says he doesn’t have enough information to make a firm opinion about the proposals.

However, he added: “It is not a sport when success is guaranteed or it doesn’t matter when you lose.

"It is uncomfortable for us because we do not have all of the information. I can only talk about what we know today.

"I support my club and I know the people. I'm part of this club, but I also have my own opinion, and I want it to be clear with the information."

    Real Madrid

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane says questions surrounding the club's involvement in the European Super League are for "one person".

Speaking ahead of Wednesday's trip to Cadiz in La Liga, Zidane batted away questions about the breakaway.

"That's a question for one person, the president [Florentino Perez]," he told a news conference on Tuesday.

"I'm here for the game. Everyone has their opinion but I'm not here to talk about that. I'll talk about the game tomorrow, the league, the Champions League - the rest isn't my job.

"You can say I'm sitting on the fence, and that's fine. Because what I like doing is coach, that's it."

Boris Johnson has told the football authorities that no action by the government "is off the table" in seeking to block the formation of the Super League.

At a meeting with the representatives from the Football Association, Premier League and football fan groups, Downing Street said that the Prime Minister reiterated his "unwavering support".

A No 10 statement said: "The Prime Minister confirmed the Government will not stand by while a small handful of owners create a closed shop.

"He was clear that no action is off the table and the Government is exploring every possibility, including legislative options, to ensure these proposals are stopped."

  11. 'Clear lack of respect'published at 12:35 British Summer Time 20 April 2021

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton are the latest Premier League club to release a statement opposing the proposals, saying a Super League would "destroy the dreams of clubs at every level" of the game.

"Brighton and Hove Albion are totally opposed to plans for a breakaway European Super League as it would destroy the dreams of clubs at every level of the domestic game," read the statement.

"These plans are the latest in an alarming and growing list of clandestine attempts from a small group of clubs whose actions would be wiping out close to 150 years of football's tradition, competition, and sporting progress through merit.

"The efforts to create a closed-shop for all but the largest clubs demonstrate a clear lack of respect for the contributions of all clubs within the domestic leagues in this country and across Europe.

"Plans for a European Super League also totally disregard fans, the lifeblood of our sport at professional levels, and fly in the face of the views and wishes of the overwhelming majority of football supporters of all clubs."

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

There are lots of rumours swirling around just now in addition to all the strong statements and stated positions against the planned European Super League.

But I have just spoken to someone who is close to the clubs concerned and they were adamant there is no weakening of resolve within the six English clubs who have signed up to ESL.

In their view, the plans have been thought through and will benefit the game as a whole.

The clubs are waiting for the storm to die down.
