  2. 'Bale is world class'published at 21:46 British Summer Time 2 May 2021

    FT: Spurs 4-0 Sheff Utd

    Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs boss Ryan Mason to BBC Sport: "It was a disappointing game last week. We had a really good training week, we could work with the team. The attitude and desire was outstanding. To couple it up with some of the quality, it was a really positive performance.

"The attitude, competitiveness, first balls, second ball, desire to fight for 90 minutes. We stuck together. We had some real moments of quality. Really pleasing performance and a positive night."

On Gareth Bale: "When you score a hat-trick and in crucial moments you’ll get the headlines. He's world class, we know that. Everyone who has watched football over the past 10 years knows what he can do. His finishing was outstanding. That's a conversation for the end of the season [on if he'll stay]. The priority and main aim now is Leeds."

On Dele Alli: "He had an excellent training week and I had to reward it. The players felt it too. He had that edge. Considering he hadn’t started a Premier League game for some time his fitness levels and attiutde was fantastic."

On Serge Aurier: "The most important thing as a defender is to defend. He’s fasting [for Ramadan] at the moment which makes it even more incredible. The mentality to have a performance like that."

On whether John Fleck should have been sent off for stamping on Giovani lo Celso's head: "Red card. Absolute red card. I can’t believe it wasn’t given as a red card. I can’t believe the referee was not told to have a look. I'm shocked - especially when you think of some of the red cards for tackles recently. It was an avoidable action. The player's safety has been put in danger. I’m shocked and disappointed."

  3. 'Not a performance we want to see'published at 21:40 British Summer Time 2 May 2021

    FT: Spurs 4-0 Sheff Utd

    Sheffield United

Sheffield Utd caretaker manager Paul Heckingbottom speaking to BBC: "We got punished for the second goal on the counter. The goals in the second half Spurs will think they're ruthless on the counter, but where we lose the ball and how we concede is poor. We changed personnel, but it was an attitude change that was necessary.

[On difference in players] "We're putting it down to ourselves and how we perform. If we're always putting it down to the opposition then we're going to struggle. That is not a performance that we want to see. It was so passive and I can't wait until the fans are back in because in a stadium like this it's absolutely dead. We tried to generate our own atmosphere in the second half but the game ran away from us.

[On Fleck's challenge on Lo Celso] I've not seen the VAR or any replays so I'll just have to trust VAR that they got it right. There's no hiding place any more in football.

[On being on shortlist for permanent Blades job] Things are no different. I know things have gone public now so in everyone else's mind things have changed, but for myself, the players and everyone in the club, nothing has changed."

  4. 'It's a stonewall red card'published at 21:35 British Summer Time 2 May 2021

    FT: Spurs 4-0 Sheff Utd

    Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs boss Ryan Mason on John Fleck avoiding a red card for stamping on Giovani lo Celso: "I am so shocked that it wasn’t a red card.

"I’m shocked the VAR team didn't at least tell the referee to have a look. I think it's a stonewall red card. I don’t think there’s a clearer red card.

"You see the replay once and he's endangered an opponent. I cannot believe it wasn't given as a red card. It’s avoidable. In my eyes it’s a red card, no doubt."

    Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs boss Ryan Mason to Sky Sports: “The attitude, the desire to compete, to keep competing over 95 minutes [was good]. We had some real moments of quality but the bravery to play in every duel, every action is most pleasing thing.

“Last week was disappointing for everyone. We had a week where we could train and work on the players. We defended strongly as a team. Some of our play was absolutely outstanding.

“I said all along Gareth Bale hasn’t and won’t lose that ability in the final third to produce moments of excellent. He’s a world class player – he’s proved that over many years. The most pleasing thing about him tonight was his attitude, his running for the team. You feel confident he’ll take the chances.

"I think that [whether Bale could stay] is a discussion once the season is done. Our priority is the next game.

“Dele Alli had an excellent attitude. He trained his way into the team. He had a really good training week. He gave 100% and had some moments.

“The clean sheet was important, the defence was excellent. It was a very pleasing night for us.

“Serge is a defender first. The priority is to defend and he did that with the rest of the team.”

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United defender Chris Basham: "4-0 is tough to take because we gave it a right go in the second half. The goals we conceded were criminal.

"We'll miss them next season because we won't be playing against them. These are the players you want to face.

"There's a buzz around the place. The manager has been brilliant since he came in."

    Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs forward Gareth Bale speaking to BBC: "We had to bounce back [from the Carabao Cup defeat] in a positive way and we did that tonight."

[On his first Premier League hat-trick since 2012] "It seems worse than it is because I've been away for a while. It's always nice to get a hat-trick but we take each game as it comes and a positive response from the weekend is all we can do. It's nice to get three goals but the team comes first. We need all the points we can get now so we’ll keep fighting to the end."

[On Aurier's assists] "Everyone played fantastic and Serge showed real quality. We have a good combination down the right and a real understanding. He’s a great player, very attacking and athletic and it’s a great performance tonight."

  10. 'I just needed a run of games'published at 21:18 British Summer Time 2 May 2021

    FT: Spurs 4-0 Sheff Utd

    Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs forward Gareth Bale speaking to Sky Sports: "It seems a while ago [since his last hat-trick] so it's nice to get a hat-trick but more important to get the three points.

[On Aurier's two assists] "It was a great performance by everyone especially Serge. I said if it was three assists he could have the match ball.

"You have to take your chances when they come so I'm feeling good. I just needed to play games and get a run of games and I'm doing that now. I'm happy and when I'm happy I play well.

"Winning always makes everyone happy and gives a winning mentality to the dressing room. It's not going to happen overnight but I feel like we're taking a step in the right direction."

  11. 'We never know'published at 21:17 British Summer Time 2 May 2021

    Spurs 4-0 Sheff Utd

    Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs right-back Serge Aurier: "We played good tonight. We play with no pressure after the final. We need this energy. It's very difficult for everyone but we know we have five games and we have to stay focussed. We never know. We have to keep this mentalty. I'm happy for the team tonight.

"Good goals tonight. I'm happy for Gareth Bale. Most important we played very good tonight. Maybe I enjoy my personal peformance when I get home but I want to enjoy the team performance now.

"The last five games, we need him in this level.

"We never know [about Champions League qualification]. People think it's silly but if we win the five games, we will see. We're happy tonight and we need to keep this mentality for the rest of the season."

Sheffield United could have easily rolled over but they haven't and they've kept on going. I'm happy that fans can go in because they've missed their fans this season the players definitely. So to see their fans this season in the stadium will be good.
