Real Valladolid v Atletico Madrid (17:00 BST)

If Atletico do wrap this thing up today, it will be the club's 11th La Liga title and their first since 2013-14.

Diego Simeone will pick up his fifth major trophy as a manager with the club. What a job he has done to make the club a regular challenger to the El Clasico sides. Tonight, they could go from challenger to champions.

  2. 'Atletico have the confidence'published at 16:52 British Summer Time 22 May 2021

Real Valladolid v Atletico Madrid (17:00 BST)

Former Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan, speaking to BBC Sport: "The way they beat Osasuna in the last game was good. They knew Real was winning and they were losing. When you see a team winning a game like that, right at the end, you believe it is the Championship. It will be great if Atletico can win in the end.

"I don't know if there will be nerves or they'll be anxious. Atletico have been top of the league for most of the season. They have the confidence but they will be anxious to get playing and in that moment to say 'we have to finish this off'."

On Diego Simeone: "As a player he was great and now he is one of the best coaches in the world. Two years ago he changed great players who gave him so many titles. He knew that was the time for them to step aside and go to another place. It must be difficult for him to say to them that they need a change. Last year was a transition year but now they are fighting for La Liga."

  3. Could Barca slip to fourth?!published at 16:49 British Summer Time 22 May 2021

    Eibar v Barcelona (17:00 BST)

One other small matter this evening is Barcelona facing already-relegated Eibar but still not yet guaranteed to finish third.

You'd expect they would nail that today, but if not Sevilla are waiting to pounce.

It'd see a bit of salt poured into Barca wounds if they do slip to fourth. Probably lead to some summer soul searching at the Nou Camp too.

This is the team they have picked today, which does not include a rested Lionel Messi...

And so we come to the bottom, which currently looks like this...

Eibar are already gone. Even if they win, their inferior goal difference head-to-head means they can't overhaul their rivals.

So, there are three teams in the relegation battle - Real Valladolid, Huesca and Elche. Only one can stay up.

Huesca are currently safe on 33 points and face Valencia, while Elche are up against Athletic Bilbao and Vallodolid play, as we've already established, Atletico Madrid.

If the season ended with the three sides tied on points, Huesca would survive, thanks to their head-to-head record against the other two.

There won't be any movement as regards Champions League qualification. Those places are already set - Atletico, Real, Barca and Sevilla.

There is a bit of jockeying for position below this, though, with three sides who need to sort out between themselves who will be playing in the Europa League and who in the new Conference League. Yeah, that thing.

As it stands, Real Sociedad and Real Betis will be in the Europa League next season. They face Osasuna and Celta Vigo, respectively, neither of whom have anything to play for.

Villarreal are in seventh, which will give them Conference League football. They'll need something against Real Madrid to change that.

However, with Sociedad on 59 points and the other two on 58, any combination of finishing spots is possible.

In short, Real need a favour from Vallodolid. Only Atletico dropping points gives them any chance. If it is a draw at the Jose Zorilla Stadium, a Real win gives them the title as they have the superior head-to-head record with Atletico, which is how they sort things in Spain.

As Arsenal fans will tell you, their opponents are pretty useful. Villarreal have a lot at stake too. They are currently in seventh place and need to win to bank a spot in next season's Europa League (putting aside that they'll be gunning for a Champions League spot when they face Manchester United in this season's Europa League final).

Atletico know that they will be champions if they beat Real Valladolid.

Yep, it really is a simple as that for Diego Simeone's team. A draw leaves the door open for Real to sneak in, with head-to-head goal difference coming into play. Real win it by that metric courtesy of their victory and draw against Atletico this season.

It is not going to be easy for them this evening. They came from behind to secure a late, late win over Osasuna at the weekend, coming back from 1-0 down with ten minutes to go to snatch it at the death thanks to Luis Suarez's winner.

In Valladolid they face a tricky opponent. they are scrapping for their La Liga lives and know they need a win to have any chance of staying up.

Take note, the rest of Europe, this is how you do a title race.

We go into today's games with two points separating Atletico at the top and Real in second. At one stage it looked as though Barcelona might be in the mix, but they have faded in recent weeks to leave it a straight shoot-out between Diego Simeone's men and Zinedine Zidane's lads.
