That's it from us on another drama-filled Champions League night, and we've not even reached the knockout stages yet...

But are Manchester United going forward with Ole Gunnar Solksjaer at the wheel or slipping into reverse? His side are kings of the comeback, lover of late goals, but Solskjaer's old United team-mates are split.

"People were questioning were they willing to run trough brick walls for Ole but they showed that," says Rio Ferdinand. "There was an intensity tonight. There is no better game to roll into the weekend."

Paul Scholes isn't so sure: "Can they play Liverpool like that? Never in a million years. Can you play Manchester City like that? Can you play a top Champions League team like that? I don't want to sound like a party pooper but that first half was a major worry for me."

"We knew it was going to be a tough game because they are probably the best team in the world. We tried but it wasn't our night."

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand on BT Sport: "I think they were more connected in the second half and weren't as easy to play through but if anyone had any doubt will these players run, hustle and fight for Ole - yes they will. Cristiano Ronaldo has scored in three consecutive Champions League games for Manchester United for the second time, previously doing so in November 2007 en route to lifting the trophy with the Red Devils.

Manchester United

Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, speaking to BT Sport: "The fans are a big part of this club. The singing section there kept the players going with their belief. That is what you do at Manchester United on a Champions League night. This corner of the stadium here are the best in the world. There is a bit of time when you are down as a supporter but you keep going.

"I thought we played well first half too. Two chances, two goals. It had to stop if we are to survive. We have a habit of doing this at this club. I thought we played well and they scored a goal out of nothing and then another set-piece. But they never stopped believing and kept going.

"Don't disrespect the players. They play for Manchester United and they know they are the luckiest men in the world. Tonight they are the luckiest men in the world because they get to play for Manchester United. That is what so many millions of boys and girls want to do.

"He had chances in the first half but Marcus kept on going. He got a knock but he is going to be very important for us. It was instinctive finish from Harry. I don't think you would have expected him to score that one. And Cristiano is great in front of goal. If anyone wants to criticise him for effort and work-rate just watch this game. Watch how he runs around.

"At half-time, I said make sure we get the next goal, because then we win the game. As long as we don't concede I was pretty sure we would win the game. It was just about taking chances."

Villarreal beat Young Boys 4-1 to pick up their first Champions League victory since March 2009.

Bayern Munich won 4-0 at Benfica and have now scored in each of their past 25 matches in the Champions League, the fifth longest such streak in the competition - they are the first to hit 25 since PSG’s 34-game run ended in August 2020.

Lille have now gone 13 home games in the Champions League without a win after their goalless draw with Sevilla, who failed to score for the first time in six matches in the competition.

Juventus grabbed a late winner against Zenit St Petersburg and have now won 13 of their last 14 group stage games in the Champions League, losing the other 2-0 to Barcelona in October last year.

Chelsea

Chelsea goalscorer Kai Havertz on BT Sport: "For us it is a very good result, to score four in our stadium is always good, it gives us confidence, we have to keep on going, recover well and be fresh on Saturday.

"It was a good goal, Callum [Hudson-Odoi] did a good assist, the ball was very far but I tried to get it, I knew the goalkeeper would go down so the only chance I had was to try to dip it.

"I came from the bench, you always have to be ready, it is always tough to come in but I tried to do my best in the second half to score a goal, so it is a nice feeling."

On Werner and Lukaku's injuries: "Timo said they have to do an MRI tomorrow, they are top level strikers and I hope it's not too bad for them."

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes on BT Sport: "I get all the excitement but that first half I just didn't enjoy it and I think that first half put me off the second. I think if they were playing a better team they'd be out of sight. That first half was worrying. It looked anything but a team, it lacked unity - that was a worrying sign.

"Can they play Liverpool like that? Never in a million years. Can you play Manchester City like that? Can you play a top Champions League team like that?

"I don't want to sound like a party pooper but that first half was a major worry for me."

Manchester United

Man Utd defender Harry Maguire, speaking to BT Sport: "The first half we conceded two bad goals. Two big moments in the game. For the first they caught us out and then the second it is a set-play that we shouldn't be conceding. We created a lot of chances in the first half so we knew at half-time that the next goal would be crucial. We got the goals we needed and deserved and I think we deserved the win in the end. Yes, we made it difficult but it is a tremendous victory in the end.

"I had eyes on it all the way [Cristiano Ronaldo's goal]. I was right behind him. His leap, his timing, it was perfect right in the corner. We see it day in, day out in training and in the goals he has scored throughout his career. He has come up with a massive goal for us again in the Champions League.

"It is normally with my head [that he scores]. I have not manged to put one away. It is my first goal for the season and the Champions league. A proud moment with my family here.

"We were two goals down and we need to sharpen up with that. But we had plenty of chances. I think Marcus [Rashford] had two one-on-ones in the first-half. We are working hard to be more solid but it is about winning and the last three or four games we have conceded too many set-pieces. It is fine margins but we need to do better. We showed great togetherness. We were clapped off at half-time by some of these fans and they gave us the belief we needed."

Chelsea

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel talking to BT Sport: "We wanted three points and wanted them deserved and we got both of those.

"We played to huge intensity, we demanded this from us and we played an excellent game until it was 4-0. We are very happy."

On injuries to Lukaku and Werner: "We have a twist of the ankle for Romelu, and muscle injury and hamstring for Timo, so they will be some days out I guess.

"Normally we are in a good place injury wise, only Christian Pulisic is out, but we miss everybody. We have a lot of games, lot of competitions, so now we have to deal and find solutions, no excuses.

"The two were in good shape, they are dangerous and can create and score so now we need to find solutions and guys who waited for their chance need to step up and score. The race is on, the guys who start against Norwich have our trust and we will try to find new solutions.

'We have won games before with Werner and Lukaku, we don't want these problems too often but it happens during a season."

Chelsea have had 15 different goalscorers in all competitions this season (excluding own goals), the joint-most of any Premier League club (level with Man City).

Andreas Christensen was one of those, scoring his first ever goal for Chelsea in what was his 137th competitive appearance for the club.

Jorginho has scored 17 of the 20 penalties he has taken for Chelsea (excluding shootouts), including each of the last six in a row. Tonight was the third time he has scored two penalties in a single game for the Blues, two of which have been in the Champions League (also versus Ajax in November 2019).

Aged 37 years and 28 days, Thiago Silva was the second-oldest player to assist a goal for an English club in Champions League history, after only Ryan Giggs (39y 363d).

Delivered it like Giggs, too.
