  2. The greatest tie of all time?

FT: Real Madrid 3-1 Man City (agg: 6-5)

The tournament that regularly delivers outdid itself on Wednesday with a tie few who saw it will forget.

Manchester City had it won at 5-3 on aggregate as the game went into injury time. But two Rodrygo goals for a Real side that had previously not had a shot on target remarkably took the game to extra-time.

Karim Benzema's penalty then settled it for the Spanish side.

    Simply breathtaking.

Man City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to BT Sport: "We were close. We were close. But in the end we could not reach it.

"We didn't play our best, but it is normal, a semi-final, the players feel the pressure and wanting to do it. Football is unpredictable, it is a game like this. We have to accept it.

"Now we need to process that and come back, with our people at home and the last four games we have."

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, speaking to BT Sport: "I cannot say we are used to living this kind if life, but what happened tonight it happened against Chelsea and also against PSG. If you have to say why, it is the history of this club that helps us to keep going when it seems that we are gone.

"I am happy to be there in the final, in Paris against another great rival. We are used to it. It will be a fantastic game for football."

Ex-England defender Jonathan Woodgate, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "You could not write it. Phenomenal football by Real Madrid and City had no comeback. What a game of football. It’s probably the best I have ever seen. An incredible performance by Real Madrid."

Former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Manchester City winger Steve McManaman on BT Sport:

"I know Manchester City have had problems in this competition before but this was the most brutal way to go out.

"We didn’t think it was going to end like that.

"It is the final Liverpool would have preferred. We wanted an all English final but this will be a brilliant final.

"If they do beat Liverpool in the final, to go through PSG, Chelsea and Manchester City, I think it would be the greatest victory ever."

Waiting in the final are Liverpool, with a bit of revenge on their mind.

    Thanks for joining us tonight.

We'll be back again tomorrow for more European semi-final action, with West Ham and Leicester in action.

  4. 'Devastating'

FT: Real Madrid 3-1 Man City (agg: 6-5)

Former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott on BT Sport: “You have to be a bit lucky. We have seen Manchester City fall at this hurdle before.

“There is still a lot to play for. The fans have to play apart on Sunday, they have to lift this team.

“It’s been a long time since Pep Guardiola won the Champions League the first time, so I am sure this will be devastating for him.”

  5. 'The greatest victory ever'

  8. Post update

FT: Real Madrid 3-1 Man City (agg: 6-5)

Karim Benzema is the second player to score 10 Champions League knockout phase goals in a single season, after Cristiano Ronaldo (10 for Real Madrid in 2016-17).

Only Ronaldo (450) and Raul (323) have scored as many goals for Real Madrid in all competitions as Karim Benzema (322).

  9. 'Football is unpredictable'

FT: Real Madrid 3-1 Man City (agg: 6-5)

    Manchester City

Man City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to BT Sport: "We were close. We were close. But in the end we could not reach it.

"It is simple. In the first-half we did not have game, we were not good enough. But we did not suffer much. After we scored the goal we were better. We found out tempo and our game and the players were comfortable. It is not like in the last 10 minutes they attack and attack and you suffer. It didn't happen. They put a lot of players in the box, with Militao, Rodrygo, Vinicius, Benzema and they put in crosses and scored two goals.

"We didn't play our best, but it is normal, a semi-final, the players feel the pressure and wanting to do it. Football is unpredictable, it is a game like this. We have to accept it.

"Now we need to process that and come back, with our people at home and the last four games we have."

  10. 'An absolute superstar'

FT: Real Madrid 3-1 Man City (agg: 6-5)

A few words from the BT pundits on the job Carlo Ancelotti has done since returning to Real Madrid:

Rio Ferdinand: “Carlo Ancelotti’s body of work stands up against anyone in any era.

“He is calm, he is measured and he knows how to win.”

Steve McMananman: “Ancelotti was at Everton last year and has comeback to Real Madrid and the job he has done is absolutely exceptional.

“He is an absolute superstar. His record and the trophies he has won speaks for itself.”

Joleon Lescott: “You can see what Carlo Ancelotti does for this group of players. A remarkable manager.”

  11. Post update

FT: Real Madrid 3-1 Man City (agg: 6-5)

Carlo Ancelotti has become the first manager to reach five Champions League finals (Marcello Lippi, Alex Ferguson and Jurgen Klopp next on four).

Last Saturday, he became the first manager to win a title in each of the top five European leagues.

  12. 'The history of Real helps us keep going'

FT: Real Madrid 3-1 Man City (agg: 6-5)

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, speaking to BT Sport:"I cannot say we are used to living this kind if life, but what happened tonight it happened against Chelsea and also against PSG. If you have to say why, it is the history of this club that helps us to keep going when it seems that we are gone.

"The game was close to finished and we managed to find the last energy we had. We played a good game against a strong rival. When we are able to equalise we had a psychological advantage in extra-time. I have no time to think about this [losing the game]. It was difficult as City had control of the game but the last opportunity we were able to go to extra-time.

"I am happy to be there in the final, in Paris against another great rival. We are used to it. It will be a fantastic game for football."

Kris Jefferson: Real Madrid showed spirit, and fair play to them, but City only have themselves to blame. 2 poor penalties to give away and should have put the game to bed in the first leg. Similar to PSG, they will never reach that top step without improving their mentality.

  15. 'The league could blow up'

FT: Real Madrid 3-1 Man City (agg: 6-5)
