Liverpool have to stand and wait and show the Real Madrid players the respect as they go and get their medals, when in reality they probably can't wait to get off the pitch and back into the dressing roon.

Liverpool have played 63 games this season - winning two cups, losing one final and finishing one point off top in the Premier League.

They were so close to perfection in many ways - but yet so far in the end.

Real Madrid's Carlo Ancelotti is the first manager to ever win four European Cups.

He told BT Sport: "I can't believe it. We had a fantastic season. We did really well. It was a difficult game and we suffered a lot, more so in the first half. In the end I think we deserved to win this competition.

"We're really happy. What can I say? I can't say more.

"I am a record man. I had luck to come here last year and have a fantastic season. A fantastic club, a really good squad with a lot of quality and mental character.

"The season was top.

"I think we passed through really difficult games. The supporters helped us a lot in the last game. They helped us tonight. We're happy and they're happy."

On Thibaut Courtois: "Wow. Unbelievable. I can't believe it."

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, speaking to BT Sport: "Yesterday in the press conference I said that when Madrid plays finals they win. I was on the good side of history.

"I saw a lot of tweets coming my way that I would get humbled today it was the other way round.

"Today I needed to win a final for my career, for all the hard work to put respect on my name as I don't think I get enough respect, especially in England. I saw a lot of criticism even after a great season.

"I am really proud of the team. We stuck to it and when I needed to be there I was there for the team. We beat some the best clubs of the world. City and Liverpool were unbelievable this season. They fought to the end in the Premier League, Liverpool won two cups and they were really strong.

"We played a great game today. We had one chance and scored it."

Paul: People hate on Real Madrid for how they play but you can’t argue that a team who beat psg, Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool deserve to win that trophy. Regardless of they played or how it happened the fact is they won them all over 2 legs or this final. well done

Courtois sprinted the length of the pitch to celebrate with the Real Madrid fans and he was the difference. This Real Madrid team know how to win and Ancelotti going back there has transformed them.

Real Madrid have had one of the toughest ever Champions League runs.

They played Paris St-Germain in the last 16, and last season's two finalists - Chelsea and Manchester City - in the next two rounds.

They came from behind against PSG, and Chelsea, and City.

And now they have beaten Liverpool in the final.

Liverpool end this season with just the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

It's been a remarkable season but they've fallen just short in the big two trophies.

A week ago they were still dreaming of the quadruple.
