For Birmingham, it was deja vu.

Lee Bowyer's side had the better of the openings at The Hawthorns but couldn't make their half-chances count and were sucker punched by a piece of West Brom quality.

It's six games without a win and five without a goal for the Blues.

The Championship table makes happy reading for West Brom fans.

They will be top, on goal difference, for at least 18 hours - Bournemouth will move back above them if they avoid defeat at Bristol City on Saturday.

It wasn't pretty, but West Brom get the victory to go top of the Championship.

The performance won't live long in the memory but a win over West Midlands rivals will.

Karlan Grant scored the winner 15 minutes from time with a fine low strike from outside the box.

The hosts are running down the clock nicely.

The ball is in the corner and Baggies boss Valerien Ismael looks relatively content for the first time tonight.

Birmingham keeper Matija Sarkic makes an outstanding save to keep out Kyle Bartley's header, pushing the ball far enough away from goal to stop Semi Ajayi from gobbling up the rebound.

But the Blues need the ball down the other end.

Play is temporarily halted after a clash of knees between Birmingham's Tahith Chong and West Brom's Karlan Grant, who's shown a yellow card.

Karlan Grant has a taste for it now.

The West Brom forward sees another long-range effort blocked and then crosses for Conor Townsend, who can't decide whether to head towards goal or shoot - and in the end does neither as the ball trickles out.

Birmingham are giving West Brom a taste of their own medicine, with countless throw-ins and crosses into the home side's penalty area.

Matt Clarke flicks one just wide of his own post, but the Baggies are standing tall for now.

An attacking change for Birmingham.

Jordan Graham comes off the bench for George Friend, and that's all their changes made.

For all their industry, Birmingham have failed to score in their past four games.

Before the match Lee Bowyer said they can't continue to miss chances. His side haven't had too many openings tonight but they're still lacking that clinical edge.

It was similarly low scoring, although a much better game, when Albion last played at Stoke two Fridays ago.

The deadlock finally got broken that night by a brilliantly worked 79th-minute goal from Nick Powell.

Tonight's piece of likely matchwinning brilliance from Karlan Grant has come just four minutes sooner. A stunning strike. And a goal worthy of winning any game. Especially one like this has been.

The Albion fans are certainly now singing loudly enough to suggest that they think they've got this one won.

Kristian Pedersen nearly heads into his own net to double West Brom's lead!

From a short corner the hosts eventually cross and Matija Sarkic punches fresh air as his team-mate Pedersen flicks the ball over his own bar.

And now the previous 75 minutes are all forgotten.

The West Brom faithful are in great voice and is all well in their world.

Birmingham respond by bringing Chuks Aneke on for Scott Hogan to freshen up their forward line.

A goal in each half from Thomas O'Connor and a first-half header from Conor Shaughnessy gives Burton all three points at the Pirelli Stadium.

Morecambe took a third-minute lead through Liam Gibson and Cole Stockton scored a 94th-minute consolation but the Brewers held on.

They move up to seventh in the table before tomorrow's fixtures.

Not pretty, but effective for Birmingham.

Meanwhile, Baggies defender Matt Clarke is booked for bringing down Tahith Chong on halfway.

Despite having less of the ball Birmingham look much more cohesive in attack.

Scott Hogan has been a real menace since the break while West Brom continue to struggle to make anything happen.
