Sweden lacked that clinical cutting edge tonight and England are looking at this thinking we can take this Sweden side – they haven’t impressed me tonight. They’ve won the game but I think England will be very happy with what they’ve seen tonight because for me Sweden don’t look clinical in front of goal.

  3. 'England look much stronger than Sweden'published at 22:27 British Summer Time 22 July 2022

    Natasha Dowie
Reading and England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Sweden had 33 attempts on goal, eight on target and one goal that counted and mattered that has allowed them to progress into the semi-finals.

They need to find a second gear if they are going to compete with the England team because head and shoulders, England look much stronger than Sweden's team.

Sweden haven't really performed to the level we expect them but they still won and got results. I think what they'll take from this is the last two minutes of the game, that belief to stay in the game. Caroline Seger, who is the captain of this team, was on the bench tonight and missed previous games due to injury.

She was getting infuriated on the bench and she was encouraging every single moment she could. They have a lot of work to do to get close to England.

  5. 'I felt the tears coming'published at 22:23 British Summer Time 22 July 2022

    Sweden 1-0 Belgium

Sweden defender Magdalena Eriksson to BBC One: "It feels unbelievable. That was our goal for the day. It wasn't easy. Belgium made it really difficult. I'm so happy we got the win. I'm so happy for Linda and that we finally got the goal.

"It was really tough. We had to stay mentally really strong. We had to stay positive. We did that. We were going to go until the 94th minute and keep pushing.

"We're through and I'm really excited to play in the semi-finals.

"So many emotions. I felt the tears coming because I was so happy. It was a frustrating evening. To finally get that relief, oh my God. I'm so proud of all the girls for how hard we fought."

On the semi-final with England: "It's going to be an extremely tough game. England have been amazing in the tournament so far. I know all the players - extremely talented players. We have to be really on it. It's about recovering and getting fresh again."

On whether two days less prep gives England the edge: "No. We're in the flow of playing games. It's about what we make of it. I'm sure we'll be 100% fresh on Tuesday."

After the heartache of losing in stoppage time, the Belgium players have come to the sidelines to chat with their families and fans.

And forwards Janice Cayman and Tine De Caigny can even manage a smile after their team's heroics against a Sweden side ranked 17 places higher than them in the Fifa world rankings.

They should be proud of their efforts tonight, even if they did come up just short.

If Sweden had to face a Belgium side who just needed a little bit more attacking threat and spark up front, they would have been in serious trouble.

Belgium just didn't quite make the right decisions, but what a performance from a side that mainly part-timers.

Nicky Evrard quite rightly was player of the match and another incredible display from the Belgium goalkeeper.

I feel so sorry for these Belgium players. They are lying on the floor and gutted.

Sweden have got away with one because they were favourites to progress. However, they were not favourites during this game. Belgium were absolutely heroic in the way they've defended and what an Evrard performance. I feel so gutted.

  11. The agony and ecstasypublished at 22:05 British Summer Time 22 July 2022

The agony and the ecstasy is plain to see on the pitch as the Belgium players collapse to the ground in tears while Sweden are jumping for joy celebrating.

Belgium goalkeeper Nicky Evrard is awarded the player of the match after keeping the Swedes at bay for 91 minutes but losing to an injury-time winner is a cruel way for Belgium to bow out.

Sweden got the job done at the very end and it's England next for them on Tuesday.

All the quarter-finals so far have been tight.

England needed a late equaliser and extra-time winner to beat Spain 2-1.

And Germany were not safe against Austria last night until a last-minute goal made it 2-0.

Kelly Smith said at half-time that Belgium can't continue being this passive, they were just letting Sweden come in the wide corridors. At some point you're going to concede if you allow so many corners and set-pieces to go against you.

Belgium put everyone on the line and said 'you are not going to score'.

The second phase and it's come from an unlikely source in Sembrant. Who cares?

Sweden do not care. They got away with one and haven't performed. But it doesn't matter, it's a sign of a good team.

You have to give credit to Sweden. They kept plugging away and they got their reward.

I feel gutted for Belgium. They have played so well this evening and just at the very end they got caught out.

You have to feel sorry for Belgium, who worked so hard. But really you can't doubt for a second Sweden deserved to win that.

They have kept knocking on the door the whole night - they've huffed and puffed. The quality of Kosovare Asllani putting balls in like that is what it comes down to, it falls to Linda Sembrant and she is never going to miss from there.

It was the one time they've had that extra second to take the sting out of it just by placing the ball into the net.
