We got the ending to Euro 2022 that we wanted.

England ended it with a trophy in one hand and the hearts of a nation cradled in the other.

More importantly, this is a new beginning of sorts for the women's game in this country. The trail has been blazed by players before this year, but the 2022 class have turned up the heat.

Sarina Wiegman paid tribute to her sister, who passed away in June: "I'm kissing this little armband. It was my sister's and she passed away earlier this year. I missed her but I think she was in the crossbar [when Germany hit the woodwork].

"She would have been here. She went to every game. She would be really, really proud too."

England's player of the match Keira Walsh on her assist for Ella Toone: "I have a good connection with Tooney anyway. She is an unbelievable player. I always know where she is on the pitch and she knows I will find her.

"I could just here her voice in that little Wigan accent! I'm really proud of her. To see her score that goal is unbelievable and there's definitely more to come from her."

On playing in front of a record crowd: "In the tough moments the crowd definitely got us through. When I was younger I definitely wouldn't have thought I'd be playng in front of almost 90,000 people. We can't let this settle, we need to take full advantage of it and I hope we have inspired them to do that."

Golden Boot winner Beth Mead: "We have been really calm. There has been a lot of buzz around. We have kept ourselves in our bubble. Credit to Sarina and the staff as they created that bubble. We just went out today to play another game of football."

Sarina Wiegman on Chloe Kelly: "She could do well because of our team – how well we appreciate each other – that’s what makes this team really strong.

"I had seen her play before she got injured and you saw she needed more rhythm when she returned for Manchester City but she was doing well already.

"She had such a difficult injury then she makes it in the squad, she really impressed in training and then she scores this goal for her and her journey it is really incredible.

"I’m happy for every player – each one has their own journey – but this is a very special moment and I’m happy for her."

Sarina Wiegman: "We are here because there is a fundamental here. During our preparation for the Euros we brought in some players who played in 1971.

"Those women are the trailblazers for the next generation. We should always remember the ones who went before us because they made a path for us. This team makes a path for the next generation.

"Never forget where you come from. We know it will change for the team from this moment but never forget the generation before. There was building and building to develop the competition here.

"I came to a team where there was quality and stability as a foundation. I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in these periods."

England manager Sarina Wiegman: "Now we won the Euros the expectation will go up again. First we will party. We are really proud.

"The development of this game has gone so fast, so many countries could win this tournament. We have all seen that. It’s not easy to win this tournament and next year that will be too. The top countries develop but so do those just under the top too. It is getting closer and closer especially in Euros.

"But now it is time to party then hopefully some time off."

England midfielder Keira Walsh: "There were a few tears for sure. A lot of girls ran over to Jill. It was a nice moment for them. I don't think it's sunk in.

"I'm from Rochdale. It's crazy to think I've just played in a Euros final and we've just won. I'm doing it with people I have grown up with. It's an unbelievable feeling. I don't think the party will last a few days.

"I just think the confidence of the squad... She [Sarina Wiegman] makes us feel so valued. You can see that in the way we played. She is an amazing person. The rest of the backroom staff are too."

Forward Beth Mead: "We're in shock at the moment. I found my mum, dad and brother straight away and got quite emotional. To celebrated this moment with them was incredible.

"I'm just Beth Mead. That's me. I play football, which is what I love doing and it's a dream come true.

"What a woman! [Wiegman] She was so calm. She believed in us and we believed in the team. Here we are."

More from Germany boss Martina Voss-Tecklenburg: "It was incredibly loud and difficult to communicate, but this will help us a lot for the future.

"We want to play for other titles and win other titles of course. I’m super proud because we gave our all on the pitch.

"That’s sad that you can’t find the right words to tell the team. I just have to process all of that first.

"We came here to win and we didn’t. I think tomorrow or the day after I will have a different feeling."

Some reaction from Germany boss Martina Voss-Tecklenburg on what she thought was a clear penalty shout:

"There was a situation at 0-0 where there was a clear handball in the box. VAR looked at it and didn’t award a penalty.

"Why did communication not work well? Why didn’t the referee look at it? That hurts a bit because that would have given us more safety if we had scored.

"There are decisions that aren’t correct, but in this level, in the final for European Championships, it shouldn’t happen.

"I am asking the question and I would like to have a discussion about that. If it happened to them [England] I would not be content either."

She added: "England are deserved champions. We have to congratulate them.

"If you score two goals against Germany you are deserved European champions."

England named the same starting XI in all six matches at Euro 2022, becoming the first team in European Championship history (men’s and women’s) to name the same starting XI in every game from the group stages to the final.

It definitely helps to have a fully fit squad from start to finish. Take nothing away from the way Sarina Wiegman managed her squad or the impact her subs had on games.

Seven of England’s 22 goals came via substitutes (excluding own goals), with only Germany (8 in 2009) scoring more in a single edition of the Women’s Euros.

Back in 2018 we were begging people to host in their stadium the women’s games for these Euros. So many people said no. I hope they’re looking at themselves and thinking they weren’t brave enough. I’m not standing up at corporate events begging for them to get involved in the women’s game. If you’re not involved, you’ve missed the boat. You’ve missed the train. It’s finally left the station. It’s gathering speed.

England's Golden Boot winner Beth Mead, who was left out of the Team GB squad for last summer's Olympics: "I can't believe it. Sometimes football puts you down but bouncing back is the best way. I'm speechless, I can't take it all in. I'm in shock. I've had a good cry with my mum and dad. I am so proud of this team, I love this team and I love this country!"

England defender Millie Bright: "Sarina [Wiegman] knows what she wants, how to get it and how to get the best out of us. That's the most together we've ever been at a tournament. She gives us confidence, she has experience and she's the loveliest person. She's brilliant."

Fellow defender Rachel Daly: "We won the Euros at Wembley? Can you believe it? I can, because I never doubted this team. I was a nervous wreck the whole time at the end. This place just erupted. Thank you so much everyone."
