    • Liverpool have scored in each of their last 32 games in all competitions, their longest ever run in the club’s history.
    • Liverpool’s Diogo Jota netted his ninth Premier League goal of the season, equalling his best return in a single campaign in the competition (also 9 in 2018-19 and 2020-21).
  3. 'Decision needs to be made for integrity of league'published at 22:51 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2021

    FT: Liverpool 3-1 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe says he thinks all Premier League games should go ahead, or none of them should.

"I don’t think we want half the games played and half not played," he said. The league loses something if it becomes disjointed. A decision needs to be made for the integrity of the league."

  4. Klopp on the rising Covid numberspublished at 22:45 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2021

    FT: Liverpool 3-1 Newcastle

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp on Covid, speaking to BBC Sport: "We are really concerned about the other stuff around the world, so far football kept it pretty much outside with the testing regimes, the massive disciplinary things for the boys did really well, but this time it is really difficult.

"My boys are double vaccinated, some boosted, but you can still get it. The present we have from some scientists is you get through it without some struggles.

"It was not cool to get the information this morning the boys were not available but knowing they are all vaccinated means they will be fine after however many days they isolate. Players' and people's welfare is the most important thing at the moment.

"I know Thomas Frank said he thinks it would be the right thing to stop the league, I don't see the massive benefit as we come back and the virus is still the same.

"We hope we can play and hope Tottenham can play (on Sunday) but then we play Shrewsbury, the vaccination rate in the Football League is pretty low.

"It is pretty unlikely when you have it once it stays with three players, maybe another three or four, then you have 13 players available to play the 26th and 28th and that is impossible.

"Stopping the league is probably not the right thing but with the schedule we have to be more flexible. We can talk about cup competitions, do we really need to play two semi-finals, play replays, all these sorts of things."

  6. 'I love how the boys dug in'published at 22:39 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2021

    FT: Liverpool 3-1 Newcastle

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to Match of the Day: "I didn't expect Chelsea would drop points, it is pretty rare I don't know five or six players of the Everton line up so to get a point at Chelsea is massive.

"We did not think about it, we just said do our job on the pitch, it is pretty similar to the last game of Eddie Howe here with Bournemouth - similar set up, tactics, we go 1-0 down again, we used that game more than Newcastle games.

"You have to react, I am really pleased but I expect it as well, it is not that we celebrate we came back. We used that time with hard work, not only briliant football, some good football, very dominant, it is not so easy to play against such a deep block. We have already a few games in our legs, I love how the boys dug in really deep and got a very deserved result."

On Trent Alexander-Arnold's last-ditch tackle: "Lucky! Unfortunately you have to say that because it should not come in a situation where Trent has to make a sliding tackle from the wrong side. I hate those situations, we should have sorted that earlier. If we concede a penalty or goal then it is unlikely he would score in the other situation. You have to sort the important situations and then you are ready for the nice ones as well.

"Let's see who is available for the weekend."

  7. Stat attackpublished at 22:35 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2021

    FT: Chelsea 1-1 Everton

    • Chelsea are unbeaten in their last 27 Premier League home games against Everton (W15 D12), equalling their longest ever unbeaten home run against an opponent in their league history (27 vs Spurs between 1990 and 2016).
    • Mason Mount (22y 340d) is the youngest Chelsea player to score 20 Premier League goals in the competition’s history.
    • Only Arsenal (20) have had more different teenage goalscorers in the Premier League than Everton (19), with 19-year-old Jarrad Branthwaite netting his first goal in the competition for the Toffees.

  8. 'The game turns on a decision'published at 22:31 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2021

    FT: Liverpool 3-1 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe talking to BBC Sport: "We really competed, the lads gave everything to the game. We had a plan and scored a great goal.

"The game turns on a decision I can't understand, the game should have been stopped [before Liverpool's equaliser]. I can't believe Mike [Dean] hasn't stopped the game, Isaac [Hayden] was holding his head and we had two players down.

"It shows how goals change games. The game changes on that incident and the crowd gets behind them. We are on the wrong end of the 50-50 calls at the moment."

  9. 'Sometimes you need a bit of luck'published at 22:31 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2021

    FT: Chelsea 1-1 Everton

    Everton

Everton boss Rafael Benitez, speaking to Match of the Day: "Obviously it is difficult to get points here but the way we did it with so many senior players not available and players on the bench still with some issues, the young players, the way they are working.

"They did everything they can do to get the points. Sometimes you need a bit of luck, this year we are not very lucky with all the injuries.

"The fans have been great from day one, the reality is since the first day against Southampton they have been fanatastic and you could see today they were enjoying it.

"The game plan was the same, we had two or three days to think about how to play against them, after we have to mix the players and see who is available. Without practicing too much they knew exactly what we were looking for."

On Jarrad Branthwaite's goal: "He is a good player, a young player who has the potential. We were practicing set-pieces, so really pleased for him. Jordan Pickford made some good saves, it is important to have a good goalkeeper behind a good defender."

On whether the Premier League should have a Covid break: "We have to be sure the priority is the health of the people, we can be an example for a lot of people because the virus is there and spreading quickly. Protecting people has to be the priority."

  10. 'I really don't know what to do'published at 22:28 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2021

    FT: Liverpool 3-1 Newcastle

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was asked about this weekend and what will happen in football soon with Covid: "It's a really tricky situation. Nobody knows exactly how we'll be tomorrow.

"We will go to the training centre untl people tell us otherwise. I've never had three players on matchday [have to pull out]. The most important thing is because the boys are vaccinated they will not feel it really. That's good. We have to wait for them.

"If we should stop the league, I have no real answer for it. If you stop it for two weeks and we come back, I really don't know what to do.

"I saw the Everton line-up today, I don't know half of the players.

"We have three players out because of Covid. If we have another three or four out, we play Shrewsbury in midweek. In League One and Two, the players are not really vaccinated. Then we play on the 26th and the 28th and you have 13 players available, that's not possible. There are plenty of questions we need to find answers for but I don't have the solution."

  11. Liverpool used Bournemouth games for analysis - Klopppublished at 22:25 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2021

    FT: Liverpool 3-1 Newcastle

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp: "We used in preparations more Bournemouth than Newcastle for analysis. We won 2-1 last time Eddie Howe was here with Bournemouth after they scored another goal. We expected similar things. They made life hard for us.

"Being 1-0 down changed the mood a bit. We were rushing in moments. We scored really good goals. I'm really pleased in this period of the year when you just have to get through games.

"I said it was the best long ball he [Trent Alexander-Arnold] played today. It was a stunner, unbelievable. His shooting technique is different level.

"In games like this the main thing is staying positive and offensive-minded. Take a chance."

On Liverpool's equaliser with Newcastle players down injured: "I didn't see it back. I heard it plenty of times. He [Eddie Howe] is not happy about it. I didn't see it back. Quite frequently players go down in the box when they lose a challenge. The assistant on my side told me all good."

On Mohamed Salah having a hand in goals for 15 consecutive league games: "That's quite amazing that. His assists are as important [as the goals]. Today was right to take him off a bit earlier. We play in three days again."

  12. 'We have to concede less goals'published at 22:19 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2021

    FT: Chelsea 1-1 Everton

    Chelsea

Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta on BT Sport: "We are disappointed, frustrated, because it is not the first time we have dropped points.

"We created chances and nearly the first time they approached our box we conceded. How important it is to keep clean sheets as a team, defend together, and of course when we concede a lot of goals the confidence drops and it is not as easy.

"We are not a defensive team, but of course we have to concede less goals if we want to get where we want to get. When you want to compete for a Premier League against these two teams who have shown how consistent they are, you cannot drop points. It makes it more difficult but there is still a long way."

  13. 'I will not get involved in this sport politics'published at 22:15 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2021

    FT: Chelsea 1-1 Everton

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel tells BBC Sport: "Defensive today was zero concerns, we conceded from a set-piece. I cannot break my head if we play like this in defence, they have zero chances to score but did from a free-kick. OK, well done.

"We missed chances and struggled to find a high rhythm in the second half.

"We didn't have anyone on the bench, we put the last guys in that we available and we are missing big personalities and quality.

"Liverpool is Liverpool, Man City is Man City. We do what we do, we have seven players out and had chances to miss the match."

Asked if the season needs a break: "I will not get involved in this sport politics. We are all worried about Covid, it is close to us, we had four positives. Other games get cancelled, ours didn't so we have to do our best to win it."

  14. 'It feels unjust'published at 22:12 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2021

    FT: Liverpool 3-1 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe talking to BT Sport: "In my opinion the game should have been stopped before their equaliser with two players down. Two players down in the box and it had a huge bearing on our game plan.

"As soon as they score the crowd are in the game and it feels unjust. The referee said he thought he was holding his back but Isaac Hayden held his head, he was dazed for four or five minutes. It could be dangerous and we have to think of the players safety, you also don't want to see games decided when you have players out of the game."

  15. 'It is hard to swallow'published at 22:07 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2021

    FT: Chelsea 1-1 Everton

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, speaking to BT Sport: "Yes, of course (it is frustrating) to give away another lead. If we see the effort we bring in a match like this, the effort we need to score one goal and the effort the opponent needs to score an equaliser - it is hard to swallow.

"We missed big chances to get the result in the first half and second half we did not find the rhythm consistently and tried to bring on some energy from the bench, but it was hard. We had the lead and give it away with one free-kick.

"Football is almost never like one reason why things go this way, but one big reason is for sure the chances we missed today. We could have been two or three up and were playing with fire. It is obvious we missed a lot of players, big personalities, regular starters, but we will not use it as an excuse."

On whether the Premier League should have a break because of Covid: "I don't know, I don't want to get involved in the political stuff. If they decide we have to play we play."

  16. 'I've been waiting for that for five years'published at 22:02 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2021

    FT: Liverpool 3-1 Newcastle

    Liverpool

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold to BT Sport: "We limited them to little chances. We knew we'd dominate possession and they'd make it hard for us. It was always going to be a difficult one. The early goal made it harder.

"Three points at this time of the season is vitally important.

"I've been waiting for that [type of goal] for five years. I've had a few ones from the edge of box and dragged them. I've caught that one sweet and it nestled in the top corner, a sweet strike and put the game to bed."

On Isaac Hayden being down injured for the Reds' equaliser: "You're not really looking at who's on the ground, who's up. But if it's a head injury it's down to the referee to stop it. He didn't. We played to the whistle and dscored. We didn't cheat or do anything unsportsmanlike."

On Mohamed Salah's form: "It's mad. He's the best player in the world, it goes without saying. He's doing everything game in, game out. He wants to break every record in the book. He wants to put his name in the history books."

On Chelsea dropping points: "You don't want the teams around you doing well but the focus is on us. It's about making sure we're consistent and winning every game we can.

"The games come thick and fast so any minor slip can prove costly come April or May.

"Until we're told otherwise we'll be in there every day [training] and making sure we're fit for Sunday, a big game against Tottenham."

  17. 'We have to make sure we are an example for the rest of society'published at 22:01 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2021

    FT: Chelsea 1-1 Everton

    Everton

Everton boss Rafael Benitez tells BT Sport: "The gameplan is always there and it depends on the players. The players, fans all together, the spirit if the Blues as they say, the issues with senior players not available, so we needed spirit, commitment and intensity against a good team. Really pleased and a good point.

"We were practicing the set-pieces and Jarrad Branthwaite did well. Jonjoe Kenny was working so hard and everyone was giving everything. We suffered a bit more today so against a good team we did what we had to do.

"100% every single player on the pitch was making a contribution for the gameplan. At the end everyone was delighted. When players are not playing, the rest of the team are happy for them too.

"Great character shown, we are coming back in a lot of games. The way they worked we deserved something. We have had too much bad luck with injuries. The reaction of the team was fantastic.

"We can see that the virus is growing and we have to be very careful. If the Premier League cancels games we have to test players and then restart without issues. We have to make sure we are an example for the rest of society."

  18. 'I am buzzing!'published at 21:54 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2021

    FT: Chelsea 1-1 Everton

    Everton

Everton goalscorer Jarrad Branthwaite, speaking to BT Sport: "I can't put it into words, I am buzzing, playing for this club, it means the world and for the those fans, travelling on a Thursday night to come and watch us, we put on a performance for them and I am buzzing - getting a result at a top team like they are.

"We worked on it in training yesterday, I got a few chances round the back, and I said to Anthony Gordon before the game just to keep delivering those balls in. When it was coming in I was like 'right, I better score here...'.

"When I signed the contract the other day my family said just remember how far you have come - in the space of two years I was playing League Two with Carlisle, the side I joined when I was eight, and now I am playing in the Premier League."
