Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira to BBC Sport: "That's what we expected. It was really tough. It was a cup tie and we had to work hard to get the win.

"It was really flat [in the first half]. We wanted to play better than we did. They made it hard for us and we couldn't pass the ball quickly enough. It was a poor first half from our side.

"We needed to play more quickly from the back and move it quicker. We wanted to put more tempo and we managed to do it.

"We scored and then conceded straight away. Today we were a little bit flat and we found the strength to score the second goal.

"We have to give them a lot of credit. They played really well. We weren't ready mentally for a cup tie and we found it difficult. We have to learn. We tried to change it in the second half, it was better.

"When we scored we thought the game was over but this is a cup tie."

On fringe player Jairo Riedewald scoring the winner: "It's about taking the opportunity when they have it. Jairo has been working hard and waiting for his opportunity. He came on at left-back and took his chance. That goal is important - it took us to the next round.

"We are excited to be in the next round. With the game we played today we know how difficult it will be. We just have to look at the draw and play better than what we did today if we want to go further."

Stoke City

Stoke City boss Michael O'Neill to BBC Sport: "At the very least [we deserved to go to extra time]. I think for a period in the second half we were the better team. There was very little in the first thalf.

"The first goal wasn't a corner. We have all the technology to see if it's a goal. Having seen it back, the Palace player's shot doesn't come off James Chester. We felt harshly done by.

"At 1-1 we looked the team more likely to win. Unfortunately we can't defend the corner. It lands to the feet of their lad. It comes through a crowd of bodies and ends in the bottom corner and that's why we're out of the cup.

"The attitude was fantastic. The quality of our play was fantastic. I don't think you'd have seen a big difference between the sides."

On Joachim Andersen's goalline clearance: "The lad did brilliant to get back. It would have put us 2-1 ahead. Those are the margins betweeen winning and losing.

"I'll watch the game back and see things we can improve on. Maybe we turned the ball over a bit too much.

"We know where we are, we have a lot still to work on but we're a team going in the right direction."

Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough manager Chris Wilder: "No I can't (explain it), in between the win at Manchester United and here we got turned over at Barnsley. A ridiculous game. The supporters gave us the energy to produce a top performance.

"It is all based around the team, there are good individual performances tonight but it is all about the collective and the team. They have to play their own part and what they bring to the team. We had to have a team performance tonight, it if went stretched we would get the result we fear - a Tottenham win.

"After the last two away games it was important to get a foodhold in the team, the shape was good and we had good possession and they did too. We grew into it and the danger players in Son Heung-min and Harry Kane are world class players and they are a top Premier League team with world players and a world class manager. We had to be right and structured. I did not want us to sit back and had to take the game to Spurs when we could. We missed a couple of great chances knowing the danger they possess.

"We are delighted be in the next round, I would love it to be a home tie. A great reward for everybody who has followed this football club. We want to make memories, we had one at Old Trafford and I believe we have had one one our own match which is brilliant."

Middlesbrough have been backed all the way by the full house and it has been an amazing performance.

• Tottenham have lost seven of their 13 matches in 2022 – among Premier League sides, only Brentford (8) have lost more games in all competitions since the turn of the year.
• Josh Coburn (19yrs 85d) became the first teenager to score in the FA Cup for Middlesbrough since Lee Cattermole (18yrs 354d) netted against Manchester United in March 2007.

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte: "For sure the result is not good and we have to be frustrated. It was a pity because in these type of game you have to start and kill your opponent. If you give them hope, they will take confidence and improve during the game. Then anything can happen.

"First of all, it is important to say that Middlesbrough played a good game, deserves respect and congratulate them for the win. We have to reflect on our performance and on the game we played. These type of games, in these trophies away from home, you have to try to kill the game quickly. Your opponent has to understand that the night will be difficult, instead we can do much better and in the end Middlesbrough deserved to go to the next round.

"This is part of our process. I repeat, we have to try to avoid the up and down up and down and there is only one way to improve the situation is to work and learn about the defeat. We have to go ahead and we will try to do our best this season.

"We have to give our best for the rest of the season, then we will see what is our position and the evaluation of our season. It is early to say something about this."

They started well. I don't know whether they did it in such a way against Leeds on Saturday where they were so clinical they were three up in no time and then they sat there in their shape and rely on breaking. They did it to good effect against Manchester City and to great effect against Leeds and they thought they'd just did it again.

They are the better side, they have the better players. They should not be sat in a defensive, passive state. Look at this Middlesbrough team, they didn't do that. They gambled and went toe-to-toe and were better for it.

Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough skipper Jonny Howson: "It was (a shift), I felt it last few minutes. We knew it was going to be tough physically and they have world class players who can move the ball around and make you work hard. You have to work hard, earn the right to play and we showed our quality. We deserved it as well.

"Beating Manchester United gave us confidence, enjoy it and give it a right good go, see what happens. If they turned us over with quality you can hold your hands up but we applied ourselves right, you see what happens in this competition and we have another upset. Moments like this don't come around but you have to enjoy it when they do.

"From a personal point of view, my little lad Harry has got into football. I was playing against Cristiano Ronaldo and now Harry Kane so I can tell him we have beaten them. Hopefully we don't lose focus and performances like tonight we can take into the league.

"Age is just a number, if you look after yourself right like Sol Bamba and Lee Peltier, we have to set the standard for Josh Coburn and Isaiah Jones, hopefully we can do that for the younger generation."

This is massively disappointing from a Tottenham point of view. No disrespect to Middlesbrough, you expect Tottenham to come here and dominate. Middlesbrough played with urgency and got stronger and stronger. Their younger players came on and made an impact.

"I hit it as hard as I could and thankfully it went in. Up there with the best (moment of career), just amazing. I can't put it into words.

"In the training ground, all the lads are buzzing. The fans are getting behind the players too. Hopefully we can continue it and get another big team in the next round."

Tottenham will be ending another season without a trophy.
