PSG don't have any heritage, they are a bunch of very talented individuals but at the end of the day they don't have the pride, the fans enthusiasm or the sense of responsibility.

Real Madrid 3-1 PSG (3-2 agg)

    Julien Laurens
French football expert on BBC Radio 5 live

This is a huge failure, of course. It is down to the players on the pitch; at that level, you cannot make the mistakes they made. Donnarumma for the first goal, Neymar gave the ball away so cheaply on the second goal. And then Marquinhos, put the ball in the stand, why would you put it across the goal?

You just need a little thing for this PSG team to choke and bottle it again. Mentally, there is a problem. Pochettino has been reactive, not proactive, especially at 1-1, unlike Carlo Ancelotti. Away from home, there is a psychological problem. They played seven of the top eight in Ligue 1 away and haven't won once. They don't put the effort in.

Manchester United have long been linked with Mauricio Pochettino as their next manager - but the issue they have now has been hanging over them since the Champions League last-16 draw was made.

Pochettino has a contract at PSG until 2023. If the French side had won last night, their attitude might have hardened to keeping him. At the very least, compensation would have been demanded.

However, now they have lost, United could be pushing to get a manager who was unable to get a team containing Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar into the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Mauricio Pochettino says the "next few weeks are not going to be easy" after his Paris St-Germain side let a 2-0 aggregate lead slip in their Champions League exit to Real Madrid.

With an hour gone in the second leg, the visitors were in complete control thanks to Kylian Mbappe's second goal of the tie.

But they were left stunned by Karim Benzema's 17-minute hat-trick and suffered another painful exit from the competition they covet more than any other.

"The first [Benzema] goal completely changed the game," said Pochettino.

"Since Cristiano Ronaldo left I know Karim Benzema has stepped up, but I think he [Mbappe] will just suit Real Madrid," former Leeds and Real Madrid defender Jonathan Woodgate said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

"I expect the fans to give him an incredible welcome. He looks destined for it. The pace of Kylian Mbappe would frighten any defender including Virgil van Dijk. He is that quick."

It was billed as his big night, an audition for the role of Galactico next season.

After scoring the goal that made all the difference in the first leg, there was so much talk about the man many would claim to be the next dominant force in world football.

For long periods, it was going to plan. Not only had he scored again to put PSG in full control, but he was tormenting the Madrid defence. It felt liker a seminal moment for him.

But defeat is a body blow for PSG's hopes of keeping him beyond the summer, surely? The latest in a long line of collapses from the French side, who can't seem to get their hands on the Champions League trophy.

It is crazy how quickly the narrative turned.

PSG signed Neymar to win the Champions League and it hasn't happened.

They signed Lionel Messi to make the difference, and he hasn't.

This was not the first time PSG have collapsed or under-performed sibce becoming a real force in Europe after the Qatari takeover in 2011.

Mauricio Pochettino is under real pressure now, but we'll get to that. The bigger picture is this has happened before, under Laurent Blanc, Unai Emery and Thomas Tuchel.

Everybody remembers Barcelona's comeback in 2017, but could this even be worse from a Parisian perspective?

At half-time the headlines were already written.

Kylian Mbappe, arguably the biggest talent in world football right now, had done it again for Paris St-Germain, scoring against Real Madrid to put the French side 2-0 up on aggregate and in command of their Champions League last-16 second leg.

But then Karim Benzema had other ideas.

The striker stunned the visitors with a 17-minute hat-trick to turn the tie on its head and send Real into the quarter-finals.

It keeps the Champions League's most successful team on course for a record 14th title and once again underlined Benzema's status as one of the best - but also underrated - strikers in the world.

Karim Benzema scored a superb second-half hat-trick as Real Madrid produced a stirring fightback at a raucous Bernabeu to reach the Champions League quarter-finals at the expense of Paris St-Germain.

Kylian Mbappe's first-half goal had given PSG a deserved two-goal aggregate lead and looked to have put Mauricio Pochettino's side well on course for the last eight.

However, a mistake by PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma proved the catalyst for a dramatic recovery with Benzema turning home after the Italian dawdled in possession.

Luka Modric's driving run and intricate pass made Benzema's second as he levelled the tie against a clearly panicked PSG, and as the visitors attempted to regroup the 34-year-old drove a low effort into the bottom right corner seconds after the restart to settle the tie.
