The Tykes will join Derby County in League One in 2022-23 after a torrid campaign that has seen them win just six of 43 matches so far.
Needing to beat the Terriers to keep their very slim survival hopes alive, they fell behind early on in West Yorkshire to a Jordan Rhodes header and Harry Toffolo's second just before the break sealed their fate.
Callum Styles pulled a goal back with almost the last kick of the game but it was far too little, far too late.

Huddersfield Town's victory over Barnsley on Friday night not only sent the Tykes down but cemented one of the play-off spots.
Realistically, that means there are seven teams fighting it out for the three remaining spots.
A victory for Luton today would almost certainly be enough to secure their place in the end of season showdown.
Blackpool might have nothing left to play for in terms of promotion or relegation this season but any thoughts that they're on the (nearby) beach were dispelled by a 6-1 shellacking of Birmingham on Monday.
