  1. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 38 mins

    Kazakhstan 0-1 Wales

Another big, big chance goes begging.

Ceri Holland takes advantage of a loose touch to drive forward and pull the ball back.

Jess Fishlock lays off to Sophie Ingle, whose drive kisses the crossbar and flies out for a goal-kick.

Wales have been quite sloppy with their possession at times actually, trying to make things happen quickly. That's fine, but you've got to have the accuracy and consistency to make it count.

  4. Green policy vindicated for Graingerpublished at 14:36 British Summer Time 12 April 2022

Gemma Grainger had a big call to make with Kayleigh Green and that excellent finish really justifies the selection.

Green has let herself down with two red cards in qualifying and her deputy, Carrie Jones, was arguably Wales' best player against France.

But Green is a goalscorer for Wales, that's her 16th goal for her country and one of the most important.

That was a lovely build-up by Wales. That Ingle pass into Angharard James, I was urging her to shoot but that pass to Tash was superb.

Someone of Tash's standard, you'd expect her to score that.

  6. Big opportunity goes beggingpublished at 35 mins

    Kazakhstan 0-1 Wales

A stylish Wales move sees Kazakhstan opened up as Angharad James rolls in Natasha Harding, but the centurion cannot take her chance as she lifts a shot beyond the far post.

Wales needed that opener. The longer they went without a goal, the more pressure would have built.

Now Wales can relax a little as they look to make the points safe.

Almost a second goal in a matter of minutes for Wales, but this time Kayleigh Green heads narrowly over.

It was all about the quick passing, the quick movements between midfield and defence.

She does well to keep the ball low because there are so many bodies in front of her and keep her body over the ball as well.

I'm pleased the goal has come before half-time because it can get a bit nervy otherwise.

    Kayleigh Green

Wales get the all-important first goal and it is a sharp finish from Kayleigh Green.

Fed by Angharad James on the edge of the area, the Brighton striker turns and drills a low shot inside the far post.

Wales have had 78% possession so far.

But the truth is that Kazakhstan's goalkeeper has not had much to do yet.

A superb ball in from Rhiannon Roberts, great pace on the ball, but what you can see is Wales players were not making those basic movements towards the front post and anticipating the ball coming to them.

    But the chances are coming.

Wales are camped in Kazakhstan territory, with cross after cross going into the box.

Surely one has to land on a Welsh boot soon, doesn't it?

They need to stop trying to force the pass. I'm pleased to see them getting bodies into the box, but if they can't get the chance from the first pass, have a little more patience and wait for the second.

This is a different challenge for Wales to deal with. As the game is developing quickly, Wales are now favourites and they're playing against teams who maybe played how they did 10 years ago, which is being more defensive.

Carving out opportunities against teams that play so deep defensively is hard but it's something that Wales have got to learn to deal with quickly if they are going to compete with the top sides.

Ceri Holland sends in a lovely cross which Kazakhstan's goalkeeper deals with, just.

On that evidence, Wales need to pepper Nazym Ismailova, the hosts' number one.

It's been a bit of a slow start. We said that Wales were going to have to be patient because Kazakhstan are playing with five, sometimes six, in the back.

But getting their technicians on the ball can open it up for Wales and get the Kazakhstan players running back to their own goal earlier. Wales need to be patient, get Fishlock on James on the half-turn and hopefully we will get some joy as the game goes on.

Gemma Grainger is out of her dugout, sending instructions to her players as they look to break down their opponents.

At times Kazakhstan have as many as seven or eight players camped around their own box.

A fabulous cross-field pass from Sophie Ingle sends Ceri Holland into space on the left, but she looks to cut inside and is dispossessed.
