  1. Now on to Englandpublished at 21:52 British Summer Time 8 April 2022

    Austria 3-1 Northern Ireland

Never say never of course - especially with this Northern Ireland team - but it looks like the World Cup qualification dream could be over for Kenny Shiels' side.

They were never close to their fluent best in Austria this evening and can have no complaints about the result, but defeat means they are very unlikely to grab second place in Group D.

Up next is England at Windsor Park on Tuesday night. Despite tonight's result, it is sure to be a huge occasion and an historic one too with the National Stadium sold-out in a first for a women's international.

Manager Shiels will no doubt have a plan for the Lionesses - he always does - so roll on Tuesday night.

Thanks for joining us and keep the chins up - there's always the Euros in the summer to look forward to as well.

Obviously it's a good feeling to get off the mark and get my first goal but it's disappointing to lose. We thought coming into the game we could have a real good go at them but maybe the ball just didn't fall for us at times. We are gutted with the result but we will be ready to go again come Tuesday against England. I maybe didn't catch my shot the cleanest for the goal, but a goal's a goal.

  3. The players had some nervous tension - Shielspublished at 21:39 British Summer Time 8 April 2022

I don't think it was a disappointing night in terms of how our players performed. We were by far the better team in the last hour of the game but you can't legislate for mistakes. Against a country like Austria it was always going to be difficult but nothing fell for us and it was just a pity we couldn't get our goal earlier as they were on the ropes. There was a little bit of nervous tension within the players because we knew we were going for that second place. It was basic mistakes but I have told them not to worry about making mistakes because that is how you get better.

  4. NI grab a consolationpublished at 21:25 British Summer Time 8 April 2022

    Austria 3-1 Northern Ireland

It was only a consolation in the end, but sub Joely Andrews found the net from distance with this low strike.

Something, at least, to cheer Kenny Shiels and his players on a difficult night in Austria.

  5. FULL-TIMEpublished at 21:20 British Summer Time 8 April 2022

    Austria 3-1 Northern Ireland

    Disappointing night for Northern Ireland.

They faded after a bright start but made it to half-time at 0-0 before three quickfire goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half killed the game.

Joely Andrews came off the bench to grab a goal that Northern Ireland's efforts deserved, but it was too late to prevent what was a fourth competitive defeat for this side side under Kenny Shiels.

More importantly, of course, it puts a huge dent in their qualification hopes ahead of the visit of England to Belfast on Tuesday night.

  6. goal

GOALpublished at 21:14 British Summer Time 8 April 2022

    Austria 3-1 Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland have the goal their hard work has deserved.

It looks like Joely Andrews got it, with a low long-range strike from that somehow made it passed a number of bodies and into the bottom corner.

Marissa Callaghan had a swing at it but it looked like Andrews' goal.

    Austria 3-0 Northern Ireland

She played in the friendlies in February, but that's nice to see Megan Bell come off the bench for a competitive appearance after an 18-month injury lay-off.

There hasn't been much to smile about for the visitors tonight, but Bell's appearance is a positive.

  9. England hit 10published at 21:06 British Summer Time 8 April 2022

    Austria 3-0 Northern Ireland

It's England at Windsor Park up next for Northern Ireland, don't forget, and the Lionesses have hit North Macedonia for 10 without reply tonight.

It's a sell-out for what will be an historic night for Northern Ireland - but they know they will be up against it.

Look away now Jackie Burns and Julie Nelson.

A defensive mix-up by Northern Ireland allows Sarah Billa to grab Austria's second goal of the night.

I'd like to see Northern Ireland coming in off the wings more and giving Simone Magill more support up front. We need to get on the front foot a lot more than we have been. The response to going three down has been good and they have started to find their shape again.

  13. Touch of class from the captainpublished at 20:51 British Summer Time 8 April 2022

    Austria 3-0 Northern Ireland

That really is a lovely little backheel volley from Austrian captain Carina Wenninger.

    Cheeky and classy.

Poor defending from the corner by Northern Ireland, mind you.

  14. goal

GOALpublished at 20:46 British Summer Time 8 April 2022

    Austria 3-0 Northern Ireland

A bad second half for Northern Ireland just got a whole lot worse.

Barbara Dunst, who scored at Seaview in October, fires home Aurtai's third goal in 15 minutes to make it 3-0 and put them firmly in control of this game.

  15. goal

GOALpublished at 20:43 British Summer Time 8 April 2022

    Austria 2-0 Northern Ireland

That's a horrible 30 seconds for Northern Ireland.

Captain Marissa Callaghan has a good chance saved and Austria go up the other end and get their second goal.

It was an awful one too from the visitors' point of view as Julie Nelson misplaces a pass to goalkeeper Jackie Burns - who was 50 yards off her line - and Nicole Billa has a gaping goal to put the ball into from long range.

  16. Good response from NIpublished at 20:40 British Summer Time 8 April 2022

    Austria 1-0 Northern Ireland

Austria really don't like Demi Vance's left foot.

The Northern Ireland full-back delivers a dangerous corner that home keeper Zinsberger failed to gather and Simone Magill almost pounced on the loose ball.

This has been a good reaction from going behind by the visitors - probably their best spell of possession of the match.

  17. goal

GOALpublished at 20:36 British Summer Time 8 April 2022

    Austria 1-0 Northern Ireland

Big blow for Northern Ireland as Austria take the lead right at the start of the second half.

The corner came in from the right and captain Carina Wenninger produces a lovely little backheel volley to beat Burns and open the scoring brilliantly.

She was maybe given too much space but she certainly made the most of it with a delightful finish.

  19. So close from the cornerpublished at 20:30 British Summer Time 8 April 2022

    Austria 0-0 Northern Ireland

What a start this would have been for Northern Ireland in the first minute.

The Austrians know all about Demi Vance's left foot from that wonder free-kick last year - and this time it almost created a chance for Rachel Furness from a first-minute corner.

  20. Cagey with all to play forpublished at 20:26 British Summer Time 8 April 2022

    HT: Austria 0-0 Northern Ireland

    Andy Gray
    BBC Sport NI

Cagey, is probably a good way to describe that one.

It's been billed as a cup final and this is almost how it has played out, with both sides playing relatively safe in the opening 45 minutes.

Austria, who have had more possession and chances, will be the happier side at the break but Northern Ireland will know they can do much better.

Importantly, however, it's all to play for.
