Both teams know they have an opportunity to lay a marker down in the group and if you look at Mexico historically they have had success early in the group stages.

There is a lot at stake here because both teams know a win here could give them control of the group.

BBC Sport's Nesta McGregor spends the night at the Qetaifan Island Fan Village just north of Doha, where football fans are staying during the World Cup.

Two Mexico players are appearing at their FIFTH World Cup. Long-serving midfielder Andres Guardado and keeper Guillermo Ochoa were both part of the Mexico squad at the 2006 and travelled to South Africa in 2010, Brazil in 2014 and Russia in 2018.

Ochoa is 37 and is making his 132nd appearance for his country.

That might have been the loudest cheer I've ever heard for the Mexico goalkeepers coming out to warm-up!

The one that followed when the rest of the team came out was just as loud.

Poland fans are hugely outnumbered at the moment. When their team came out, it was midway through a Mexican song. They were booed heavily apart from a small contingent of Polish to the right of us.

It feels like a match taking place in Mexico.

    Talking of Hirving 'Chucky' Lozano....

The winger was given the nickname ‘Chucky’ after the famous doll from the horror films – not for his looks, but because he used to hide under his team-mates’ beds in the Pachuca academy and jump out to scare them.

Mexico fans chant his name to the tune of ‘Seven Nation Army' by The White Stripes: "El Chuck-y Lo-za-no".

Stadium 974 is just a couple of stops from where we are staying here in Doha.

I bumped into Alberto, who has travelled all the way from Mexico by himself for all three group games.

"Poland's attack is a weakness," he said. "They only have Robert Lewandowski and we can control him. Then they have to worry about Hirving 'Chucky' Lozano."

Alberto is going for a 1-0 Mexico victory.

Slough-born Matty Cash has proved a popular addition to Poland’s squad in the last year – can the Aston Villa star shine on the biggest stage of all?

The right-back received Polish citizenship in October 2021 and was soon installed in the starting line-up.

Ryszard Tomaszewski, Cash’s maternal grandfather, was born in a town then in Poland but now within Ukraine’s borders.

Cash has quickly won over fans with his performances and attitude, with one Polish newspaper writing in March that "Cash won the hearts of Poles thanks to his personal charm and unpretentiousness".

Though not a Polish speaker, Cash learned the lyrics to their anthem by watching on YouTube.

The area was dominated by Mexican fans as we approached the 974 Stadium, mostly draped in green.

This couple came dressed in their best outfits - face make-up and all - and were waiting to take a photo with the giant World Cup trophy.

How that make-up has not run in this sun, I have no idea...
