This is probably the highest profile player exit at Manchester United since November 2005 when captain Roy Keane left - also by mutual consent - and also for a critical interview.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored 118 goals in 292 games in his first spell at Old Trafford before leaving for Real Madrid in 2009.
In that six-year spell he won three Premier League titles, one Champions League, two League Cups and one FA Cup - as well as the Fifa Club World Cup and Community Shield.
But this 18-month spell yielded just 27 goals in 54 games - and no silverware.
Cristiano Ronaldo had just over seven months remaining on his £500,000-a-week contract with United.
His departure leaves him free to sign for another club when the transfer window opens in January.

Cristiano obviously did that interview with the mindset that he wasn’t happy and wanted to get out of the club. He made that very clear.
I think Erik ten Hag got what he wanted in this situation as well. Both parties are happy and we can move on.
The next chapter for Cristiano? It depends what his motivation is. Play in the Champions League? Money? To continue playing somewhere with a nice climate?
We'll find out in due course I'm sure.
