While England were playing the United States, back in London the Wembley Arch was lit up in rainbow colours.

A statement by the Football Association said: "The FA will continue to show our support to the LGBTQ+ community and all other communities during this tournament and long beyond, starting with lighting up the Wembley Stadium arch in rainbow colours for Friday's match with the USA."

England are on the verge of reaching the knockout stage of the World Cup but Wales face an uphill battle in their quest to make the last 16.

Friday's defeat to Iran means Wales will need to beat England on Tuesday, and hope results go their way, if they are to progress on their first World Cup appearance since 1958.

The Three Lions will go through regardless if they avoid a four-goal defeat by Wales.

England turned the clock back to the dismal days of summer as their laboured style returned, along with the jeers from supporters, following the undistinguished draw with USA.

The attacking verve, creation and goals that illuminated the 6-2 triumph against Iran in their opening World Cup game were replaced by an England side lacking ambition and drive in a performance so devoid tempo and urgency that at times it almost ground to a halt.

And as the final whistle sounded, fans who revelled in the free-flowing style that demolished Iran made their feelings clear by delivering a loud and resounding raspberry in the direction of Gareth Southgate's players.

When Wales manager Robert Page, disconsolate after his side's World Cup loss to Iran, bemoaned that this was one of the games when they could not "carry one or two players if they have off days", it was not difficult to work out who he meant.

Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey are two giants of Welsh football, architects of this golden era which has brought their country qualification for two European Championships and a first World Cup for 64 years.

Bale, the nation's captain, all-time leading scorer in men's football and now its most-capped male player with 110 appearances, is by most people's reckoning the greatest player to come from Wales, while Ramsey is not far behind in the rankings.

But during Friday's defeat - which leaves Wales staring at group-stage elimination in Qatar - these two stellar talents were reduced to near bystanders.

An absolute sucker punch for Wales, who conceded two goals in added time and now find their hopes of qualification from Group B hanging in the balance.
