    Germany 1-1 Japan

    Chris Sutton

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

What have we learned in the last few minutes? Japan can play great football. They can take risks. Neuer makes a decent save initially but then he pushes that out into an area and Doan can't really miss. Japan are level and Japan can play.

  2. GOAL - Germany 1-1 Japan

    Ritsu Doan

They have had another chance - and they have taken it!!!

Three substitutes combine as Kaoru Mitoma feeds Takumi Minamino. His cross-shot is only palmed away by Manuel Neuer to Ritsu Doan, who smashes the ball into the roof of the net!

    Germany 1-0 Japan

    Chris Sutton

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's a brilliant save from Neuer. Sakai should have buried that, he balloons the ball over the bar. That was the chance for Japan and they didn't take it. Will they get another one?

  4. GREAT SAVE!

    Germany 1-0 Japan

    What a save Manuel Neuer!

Junya Ito chests the ball down in the box and fires in a shot that takes a deflection before being palmed away by the Germany number one.

Hiroki Sakai then blazes the rebound over the bar - he HAS to score there.

That was Sakai';s last touch as well. He is replaced by Takumi Minamino.

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

There we go, the Japanese team are livening up now.

  6. Post update

    Germany 1-0 Japan

Things are getting lively now. Wataru Endo puts in three or four meaty - but fair - challenges to try and launch a Japan counter before winning a free kick.

  7. Post update

    Germany 1-0 Japan

    Chris Sutton

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Great by Gonda, four saves in quick succession. Gonda down to his left and right hand side. He put his body on the line. How crucial those saves could be from Gonda the Great.

  8. GREAT SAVES!

    Germany 1-0 Japan

Japan are hanging on here - thanks to FOUR saves from Shuichi Gonda!

He denies Jonas Hofmann and Serge Gnabry three times in quick succession.

  9. xG newsflash

    Germany 1-0 Japan

    Germany vs Japan attacking stats

Germany have reached more than two expected goals, helped by Gundogan's penalty as part of his highest ever haul of shots in a match at these finals.

Miroslav Klose was the last Germany player to have five shots in the first half of a World Cup game, repeatedly fancying his luck against Ecuador in 2006. Jurgen Klinsmann, with six, was the last player to have more, against the United Arab Emirates in 1990.

Japan must be hoping Mitoma's magic leads to their first attempt on target.

  10. SUBSTITUTION

    Germany 1-0 Japan

Double sub for Germany as Kai Havertz and Thomas Muller are replaced by Jonas Hofmann and Leon Goretzka.

  11. Post update

    Germany 1-0 Japan

    Chris Sutton

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Japan are taking the game to Germany. You feel their confidence may just be growing. They have to create a clear cut chance.

  12. Post update

    Germany 1-0 Japan

A corner to the far post finds Kou Itakura, but his header back into the six yard box is well cleared by Nico Schlotterbeck.

Japan are slowly working their way into this game.

  13. Post update

    Germany 1-0 Japan

    Chris Sutton

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Do you think the Germans could get a bit nervous at 1-0? Do Germans get nervous?

  14. Post update

    Germany 1-0 Japan

Lovely skill from Jamal Musiala as he dances away from Ko Itakura and lures the Japan player into a foul.

Musiala has been the best player on the pitch so far.

  15. Post update

    Germany 1-0 Japan

    Chris Sutton

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

That's a big chance for Japan and that's all it takes with the Germans only 1-0 up. It's a decent shot from Asano but he just leans back. You've got to work Neuer with that effort. They may feel that they can hurt this German team if the Germans aren't clinical.

  16. Post update

    Germany 1-0 Japan

A rare break for Japan that results in Takuma Asano ballooning a shot well over the bar from just outside the area.

He needed to show a bit more composure there.

  17. Post update

    Germany 1-0 Japan

    Chris Sutton

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's really good build up play. Gundogan drifts superbly but he should score. He was just trying to slip the ball in at Gonda's near post. Germany should be out of sight.

  18. HITS THE WOODWORK

    Germany 1-0 Japan

    Unlucky!

Jamal Musiala is at the heart of everything good about Germany again as he sets up Ilkay Gundogan in a central position on the edge of the box, but his low shot clips the post with Shuichi Gonda at full stretch.

  19. SUBSTITUTION

    Germany 1-0 Japan

Double change for Japan as Takuma Asano and Kaoru Mitoma come on for Daizen Maeda and Yuto Nagatomo.

  20. Post update

    Germany 1-0 Japan

It is the Germans who look the most likely to score right now, though.

David Raum plays it through to Kai Havertz, but goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda just manages to get a touch on the ball to divert it away from danger.

Play is then stopped for offside, presumably Havertz. But the replays suggest he was well on.

    Strange.
