Germany 1-0 Japan
Japan look desperate for the half-time whistle. They cannot escape from the edge of their own penalty area at the moment.

Razor sharp from Musiala, he gets on the half turn, dynamic, creates half a yard of space. He should do better with the shot. But there is a quick touch with his right foot and he lifts it over Gonda's bar.
Germany 1-0 Japan
Grear skill from Jamal Musiala as he skips away from two challenges on the edge of the box, but his shot is always rising and it goes well over bar.
Four minutes will be added on at the end of this half, which is quite conservative compared to what we have seen so far this tournament.

German player dives, the keeper tries to get past the diving player and is adjudged to have fouled them in the second instance! What am I missing?!

The Mexican wave has started, which has livened the crowd up a bit.
Germany 1-0 Japan
Germany are looking dangerous now. Another flowing move sees Thomas Muller tee up Joshua Kimmich, but his effort fizzes well over the bar.

Look at the size of the technical areas here, could have a five-a-side game in there.
There's Hansi Flick on the edge of his area, you'd expect him to rush out and sweep up considering who his number one goalkeeper is.

Japan will eventually have to change their game plan because the Germans have that confidence, swagger and arrogance about them now.
Germany 1-0 Japan
Ilkay Gundogan's penalty placement was somewhat unusual - none of his previous five, which were all successful and included one against England at Wembley in September, had gone to the goalkeeper's right.
As long as they find the back of the net, Germany won't mind one bit.

Japan have been passive but they have set up to counter attack. I'm not sure they are going to change too much at 1-0 down but they have been passive.
Germany 1-0 Japan
There are four players forward in another rapid counter-attack, but Takefusa Kubo's cross from the right is poor.
He has three players in blue to aim for there. The final pass is letting Japan down at the moment.

We were all expecting that outcome. Gundogan cool as you like. Confident penalty and the Germans getting that joy down the left hand side. The penalty was pretty central but Gonda had already gone.

We saw Robert Lewandowski fluff his big moment yesterday.
Ilkay Gundogan makes no mistake though, sending Shuichi Gonda the wrong way and Germany are up and running.
It's the first time we've heard the German fans too. They've been rather subdued so far.
Ilkay Gundogan
Never in doubt.

Big chance for the Germans, they don't miss penalties.
Yep, penalty given.
Ilkay Gundogan will take it.

I thought Gonda looked guilty. Good run from Raum, they haven't dealt with him. Gonda catches him. He says he didn't but it looks like there was enough contact.
The VAR official is taking another look, but it looked a clumsy challenge to me.
David Raum is brought down by Shuichi Gonda and the referee points to the spot!
