  1. 'I expect England to beat Wales'published at 09:05 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2022

Wales v England, Tuesday, 19:00 GMT

    Alan Shearer
    Former England captain

I'd really expect us to beat Wales and go through as winners of our group, which was always the aim.

It won't be easy, of course. Wales' situation means they have to win to have any chance of getting out of the group, and then you have the rivalry you encounter whenever the home nations play each other which adds another element to the game.

It's pretty obvious what I want to see now - the same attacking outlook, ideas and energy we showed in the Iran game. If we do that, we will be back on track for the next part of this World Cup.

Striker Romelu Lukaku is unlikely to feature for Belgium later on in their game with Morocco.

The Inter Milan player is ahead of schedule in his return from a thigh injury though.

An injury-plagued season has seen Lukaku play five times and complete 90 minutes just once since rejoining Inter on loan from Chelsea.

His latest problem has seen him sidelined since the end of October and he missed Belgium's 1-0 win over the Canadians before resuming team training on Friday.

"Medically Romelu was only available for the third game, but he's ahead of where he should be and the signs are very good," said boss Roberto Martinez.

"I don't expect him to be involved on Sunday unless something very good happens today [Saturday]."

England midfielder James Maddison joined the World Cup squad for training in Qatar for the first time on Saturday.

Playmaker Maddison, 26, was one of 14 players to take part in the session as he continues his recovery from a knee injury he suffered during Leicester's win at West Ham on 12 November.

England will qualify for the knockout stage if they avoid a 4-0 defeat against Wales in Group B on Tuesday.

Ahead of Germany’s crucial World Cup group match against Spain, Jurgen Klinsmann has told the World Football in Qatar podcast that “Spain is the team we fear the most from all the teams in the world.”

A second successive World Cup group stage exit would be “a disaster times 10”, “a catastrophe” and “almost unforgivable”, the former World Cup winner said.

Also, on the Germany hands-over-mouths gesture, Klinsmann said: "I’m here to watch football and I expect my team to come here and play good football. That’s their job and everything else is not relevant, everything else is not important. And I hope the team focuses on football now and finds a way to beat Spain."

  10. 'Where there is Messi, there is hope'published at 08:41 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2022

    FT: Argentina 2-0 Mexico

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer in Doha

Lionel Messi's career has brought four Champions Leagues, the Ballon d'Or seven times and 10 La Liga titles at Barcelona. His time at Paris St-Germain is still regarded as something of a footnote but even there he has won a Ligue 1 crown.

The World Cup is the missing link and this is Messi's last chance to claim it.

Argentina did not entirely convince, have yet to show the form that has them ranked number three in the world, and the prospect of a painful exit still remains when they face dangerous opponents in Poland.

For now, however, Argentina's World Cup show is back on the road because where there is Lionel Messi, there is hope.

  11. Mbappe v Messi?published at 08:38 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2022

    France

Anyone for France v Argentina in the last 16 next Sunday?

It could happen. France are the first side to confirm their place in the last 16 and are well on their way to winning Group D.

The winners of Group D face the runners-up in Group C, where Poland currently have a one-point lead over Argentina going into the final round of matches.

Kylian Mbappe v Lionel Messi on the world stage. Hit the thumbs if you like the sound of that one!

Kylian Mbappe's double against Denmark yesterday has seen his World Cup goal total rise to seven.

Only Pele has scored that many goals in the tournament before turning 24.

Mbappe is already France's second top World Cup scorer ever - only behind Just Fontaine.

Lionel Messi has paid tribute to the fans for their role in Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Mexico.

"We have spent much time together hand in hand," he is quoted saying in Argentina’s Clarin newspaper.

Messi, who scored the opener, added that the team and fans can "achieve beautiful things" together.

"The first half we played with a lot of intensity and in the second, when we calmed down, we went back to being who we are," said Messi.

Qatar, the day before, became the first team to be eliminated.

  17. 'Harry Kane needs a rest'published at 08:23 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2022

Wales v England, Tuesday, 19:00 GMT

    Alan Shearer
    Former England captain

After his first two games at the last World Cup, Harry Kane had scored five goals. At the same stage of this tournament, he has not had a shot on target.

I am not overly concerned about that statistic, because we know the provider role Harry plays for this England team even when he is not scoring himself, but watching him against the United States it was clear something wasn't right.

It might be time to think about getting him right for the knockout stages, and I have a sneaky feeling Callum Wilson might come in to face Wales on Tuesday instead.

England need to freshen things up anyway, to get the feel-good factor back after the disappointment of our draw with the US, and restore a bit of confidence.

  18. 'Whoever scores against England will be hero for life'published at 08:21 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2022

Wales v England, Tuesday, 19:00 GMT

    Ashley Williams
    Former Wales captain

Wales are in a weird position for the next couple of days because we are not definitely out of the World Cup yet, but we know we are really.

Being realistic, we have to forget about making the last 16 because our chances are so slim. Instead, our focus should change to just leaving this World Cup on a high.

That's the mentality I would have as a player in this situation and then if by some miracle we do stay in the tournament, the celebrations would be unbelievable.

So we have to lift ourselves for this final game in Group B and it obviously really helps that we are playing England on Tuesday.

That's a massive occasion in any situation, but especially because it's the first time we have met at a World Cup.

We haven't beaten them since 1984 so, if we win, whoever scores will probably be a hero for life in Wales.
