  1. Goodbye

    FT: Japan 0-1 Costa Rica

A day to remember at the World Cup for Costa Rica. From a humiliating 7-0 defeat against Spain, to three points against Japan.

The celebrations are continuing but we're heading off. Thanks for your company.

Don't forget, there's loads more World Cup action to come today with Belgium against Morocco starting next.

You can follow that one here.

    Have a great day!

  2. Seventh heaven

    FT: Japan 0-1 Costa Rica

    Keysher Fuller

Costa Rica became the first team to concede seven goals in a game, then win their next match at the World Cup since Paraguay in 1958 (lost 7-3 to France, won 3-2 against Scotland).

  3. 'A jab on the chin'

    FT: Japan 0-1 Costa Rica

    Dion Dublin

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

We've had a few results of this stature and we'll have some more as well. Japan have had a bit of a jab on the chin today and Costa Rica have kept their World Cup alive.

  4. Post update

    FT: Japan 0-1 Costa Rica

Japan's fans are at it again. Despite losing to Costa Rica, many have stayed behind to clear up litter in the stands.

  5. Post update

    FT: Japan 0-1 Costa Rica

    Karen Bardsley

Former England and Manchester City goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

A bit of a shock. What does that result say about Germany?

  6. 'Japan really struggled'

    FT: Japan 0-1 Costa Rica

    Stephen Warnock

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Just that one moment from Fuller changed the game. We thought Japan should win this game quite comfortably based on the form book but they were poor. They really struggled.

What a win for Costa Rica. They had to waste time and get energy back into the legs. They looked so much more organised today and made it that much more difficult for Japan.

  7. First win on World Cup stage since 2014

    FT: Japan 0-1 Costa Rica

Look at what this result means to the players of Costa Rica.

They end a seven-match winless run at the World Cup (W0-D4-L3, matches decided by a penalty shootout are classed as a draw).

Their last World Cup victories dated back to the 2014 group stage: against Uruguay (3-1) and Italy (1-0) respectively.

    FT: Japan 0-1 Costa Rica

Japan had 11 attempts in the second half, Costa Rica one.

  9. Get Involved

    #bbcfootball

Wayne Ellis: Even if Germany lose tonight, they’ll probably only need to beat Costa Rica to qualify. Huge missed opportunity from Japan.

Count Ford: What we are seeing is the complete folly of judging teams based on one game/result. Any team at this World Cup, excluding Qatar, has got here because on their day they are capable of winning important matches.

  10. 'Group of death living up to expectations'

    FT: Japan 0-1 Costa Rica

    Conor McNamara

    BBC Radio 5 live commentator

This was always a great group. With Spain and Germany in the same group it was the proverbial group of death - and it is living up to expectations.

  11. Post update

    FT: Japan 0-1 Costa Rica

If Germany defeat Spain later (19:00 GMT), all four teams in Group E will be on three points with one round of games to play.

  12. From humiliating 7-0 defeat to famous victory

    FT: Japan 0-1 Costa Rica

    National pride restored.

  13. 'One of the greatest stories'

    FT: Japan 0-1 Costa Rica

    Stephen Warnock

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

One of the worst games of football we've seen but we leave it with one of the greatest stories. Costa Rica coming back from losing 7-0 and not being fancied at all to seeing tears of joy from the players. Brilliant to watch.

  14. Post update

    FT: Japan 0-1 Costa Rica

Can you hear that roar? It's the whole of San Jose celebrating a famous World Cup win. It's approaching 4am in the capital of Costa Rica but no one is going to bed.

  15. 'Another big shock'

    FT: Japan 0-1 Costa Rica

    Conor McNamara

    BBC Radio 5 live commentator

It's another big shock at the World Cup! Costa Rica only needed one chance. Keysher Fuller took his opportunity and it keeps their dream of reaching the last 16 alive.

After the 7-0 humbling to Spain, this is redemption. Look at what it means. Tears in eyes, the celebrations and the emotions spilling out from Costa Rica.

  16. FULL-TIME

    Japan 0-1 Costa Rica

  17. 'Poor from set pieces'

    Japan 0-1 Costa Rica

    Stephen Warnock

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Japan have been poor from set pieces. They need some quality from the free-kick.

  18. Post update
