    Mauricio Pochettino

Former Argentina defender on BBC One

Deep down you need to feel like you're the best coach in the world or it is difficult to translate that to your players.

  2. 'Spain are the team Germany fear the most'

    Spain v Germany (19:00 GMT)

Ahead of Germany’s crucial World Cup group match against Spain, Jurgen Klinsmann has told the World Football in Qatar podcast that “Spain is the team we fear the most from all the teams in the world.”

A second successive World Cup group stage exit would be “a disaster times 10”, “a catastrophe” and “almost unforgivable”, the former World Cup winner said.

  3. 'Sides are being too cautious so far'

    Spain v Germany (19:00 GMT)

    Mauricio Pochettino

Former Argentina defender on BBC One

I admire Hansi Flick a lot. He is a very good friend.

I was speaking to him at Wembley when they played England. He was worried about the focus on his side.

This World Cup is different with only a week's build-up. There is no time to build anything, and I suspect that is why we're seeing shocks.

Germany are a big team. They are under pressure. They will have to manage the stress tonight and decide on their approach.

I have not been impressed with a lot of the sides in this tournament because of the cautious style of their play.

    Spain fans

Imagine my surprise when these guys all had English accents…

‘Why?’ was the obvious question. ‘Why not?’is the fair reply!

  5. One... twice... three times a loser?

  6. Sutton's prediction

    Spain v Germany (19:00 GMT)

    Chris Sutton

This is a hard one to call. Germany are inconsistent but you can see the way Hansi Flick wants to play.

They will try to take the game to Spain but that is very dangerous.

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague was another to appear on our 5 live World Cup preview show and he said Spain might struggle to score goals, but they have not made a bad start with seven in their first match.

I can see this ending a draw, which would not knock Germany out but leave them on the brink of a group-stage exit for the second successive World Cup.

    Prediction: 1-1

  7. 'The team most similar to Spain'

    Spain v Germany (19:00 GMT)

Spain head coach Luis Enrique, however, expects a tough game against the under-pressure Germans.

"Without a doubt, they are the team that is most similar to Spain in terms of dominating the play and controlling it," he said.

"That is a beautiful challenge for us. I think it will be an open game."

  8. Scotland?

    Spain v Germany (19:00 GMT)

    Andy Cryer

    BBC Sport in Qatar

    Scottish fans

    And representing Scotland…

Yes, you heard me, Scotland have made the World Cup - well these two have anyway.

One of them has lived in Qatar for a few years now and is just here ‘for some good football’.

He describes the incredible change in the infrastructure in Qatar since being awarded the World Cup.

‘They have thrown everything at it’, he said.

  9. Post update

    Spain v Germany (19:00 GMT)

    Jurgen Klinsmann

Former Germany head coach on BBC One

The spine of Germany's team tonight is basically Bayern Munich and they are in the top four teams in the world so there is nothing to fear tonight.

  10. 'First final'

    Spain v Germany (19:00 GMT)

Germany boss Hansi Flick says the World Cup game against Spain is a "first final" as they try to avoid another early exit at a major tournament.

A group-stage elimination in 2018 was Germany's earliest for 80 years and they reached the last 16 at Euro 2020.

After a shock 2-1 defeat by Japan in their opening game, another loss to Spain would seriously harm Germany's hopes of progressing in Qatar.

"The past two tournaments were not [good]," Flick said.

"We want to avoid a repeat of this. The focus is on concentration. This is the first final for us at the World Cup and that's what it's about - to avoid a repeat of that."

Tonight we'll find out what this Spain side are actually about.

  13. The reign of Spain falls mainly in 2010

    Spain v Germany (19:00 GMT)

Winners once, in 2010 - the nation's undoubted peak on the global stage.

Andres Iniesta with the World Cup in 2010

Only once before and since have Spain reached the last four of the World Cup - in 1950.

On four occasions they have been eliminated in the quarter-finals.

  14. Why Germany are a big World Cup deal

    Spain v Germany (19:00 GMT)

Four-time winners. Second only to Brazil for trophy wins, who have five...

West Germany receive the World Cup in 1954
West Germany with the World Cup in 1974
West Germany celebrate with the World Cup in 1990
Germany celebrate with the World Cup in 2014

They've also been runners-up four times and reached the semi-finals a further four times.

Of the 20 World Cups they have entered, the Germans have only failed to reach the last four six times.

  15. Never write off the Germans?

    Spain v Germany (19:00 GMT)

Until the World Cup in Russia in 2018, Germany had never before exited the finals in the initial group stage.

South Korea rocked up and ruined that in one of the most dramatic finales to a group in World Cup history. Go on, have a watch below...

    Video content

Video caption: World Cup 2018: South Korea 2-0 Germany - highlights

Going out of the World Cup in the group stage for two tournaments running is unthinkable for a country so used to mixing it at the business end.

They didn't exactly set the last Euros alight either, bowing out to England in the last 16.

Look at their record in the tournaments preceding that, though...

Runners-up and semi-finalists twice in the Euros and four World Cups on the bounce that saw them reach at least the semis, winning it in 2014.

  16. Post update

    Spain v Germany (19:00 GMT)

    Jurgen Klinsmann

Former Germany head coach on BBC One

A lot of things went wrong for Germany in the first game.

They thought they were cruising after the first goal and they thought they were going to take the game home quietly.

There was never a sense of urgency and determination.

  18. 'I draw the line at orgies'

    Spain v Germany (19:00 GMT)

"I don’t mind players having sex the night before matches but I draw the line at orgies."

It's not your standard utterance from a manager ahead of a World Cup game.

But then not many managers take to Twitch like Luis Enrique to address fans, something he has promised to keep doing as long as Spain are in the tournament.

When he was asked if players should be told not to have sex before games he said: ‘It’s ridiculous [to ban it[. It's something I consider totally normal.

"If you're at an orgy the night before a match then obviously that’s not ideal, but when I’m a club coach the players are at home the night before a game and it’s not something that worries me at all.

"If it’s something they do then it’s because they need to and want to. But I repeat with common sense! Each one with their partner. It’s normal. When I was a player if I was at home before a game, with my wife, well we did what we had to do."

  19. Post update

    Spain v Germany (19:00 GMT)

    Mauricio Pochettino

Former Argentina defender on BBC One

I am enjoying the World Cup a lot. The organisation here has made it an amazing experience.

There have been some really good games, especially Argentina's win last night.

  20. Post update

    Spain v Germany (19:00 GMT)

    Raphael Honigstein

German football journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

Keysher Fuller who scored for Costa Rica has got the chance of some statue or a stadium named after him in Germany because he's done so much for the mood and situation.

This has gone from a must-win to a draw is actually a decent result and I think that will make such a difference phychologically.

You don't have to beat Spain to stay alive. You can even lose and have a chance. I think that will make it much easier for the players to deal with this pressure.
