  1. Thanks and good night

    Another day done.

We'll be back again tomorrow for four intriguing games, including Brazil v Switzerland and Portugal v Uruguay.

    Night all.

  2. Story of the game...

    FT: Spain 1-1 Germany

A Spain win would have put them firmly in control of the group. Germany needed to win, but most of all not to lose, or they would have been relying on goal difference to reach the knock-out rounds.

Manuel Neuer came to the four-time winners' rescue early on...

A better-times run and Antonio Rudiger would have given the German's a first-half lead...

After the break, Unai Simon almost cost his side before making amends...

It was then a tale of two substitute strikers.

Alvaro Morata gave Spain the lead...

And Niclas Fullkrug nabbed a big point for Germany to keep Group E in the balance.

A win in their final group games (Spain face Japan and German play Costa Rica) and both sides will qualify.

  3. Post update

    FT: Spain 1-1 Germany

    Jurgen Klinsmann

Former Germany head coach on BBC One

The goal is huge for Germany. I am very confident that Spain will get the job done against Japan and that Germany will get through to the next round.

  4. Post update

    FT: Spain 1-1 Germany

    Rio Ferdinand

Former England defender on BBC One

Hansi Flick will be the happier manager, especially with the way they finished the game. It is always important to finish the game on the front foot because it will give them a spring in their step.

Luis Enrique won't be disappointed though.

  5. 'I expect both to go through'

    FT: Spain 1-1 Germany

    Peter Schmeichel

Former Manchester United goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

I'm impressed. I expect both of these teams to go through now and once they get past the group stage we all know that it becomes a different tournament for the teams and they approach it in a different way. There's every opportunity to improve.

  6. 'The result was fair against a very tough Spain side'

    FT: Spain 1-1 Germany

    Germany

Manchester City and Germany midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, speaking to BBC One, says: "We could've scored earlier. We scored but unfortunately it was disallowed.

"We had really good chances and if you look at the chances we were a little bit better but in the end the result was fair against a very tough Spain side. Now it's all about the last game of the group stage.

"It's crazy. A competition like the World Cup and playing such a tournament you already know it's going to be dramatic. Some games are full of different momentums - up and down.

"I was on the bench talking to Thomas Muller and we felt there was a goal for us. The finish from Niclas was unbelievable, a typical striker's finish and he stood up when we really needed it."

  7. Post update

    FT: Spain 1-1 Germany

    Jurgen Klinsmann

Former Germany head coach on BBC One

Inconsistency has been a big word in this World Cup so far and the number nine issue is a big thing for a lot of teams. The trends are interesting.

  8. Post update

    FT: Spain 1-1 Germany

    Alan Shearer

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

When you're a coach or a manager you're making subs because you need them to have an impact, to win the game or save the game. Morata offered a threat in behind, some of his runs were incredible. Your job as a forward is to get across and be there to the ball first. That's the impact Luis Enrique needed.

Then it was over to Hansi Flick and he brings Fullkrug on who's big, awkward, who's gangly. On this occasion it just had too much power and before the keeper could react it was past him.

  9. Post update

    FT: Spain 1-1 Germany

    Mauricio Pochettino

Former Argentina defender on BBC One

For me Jamal Musiala is one of the most talented young players. With Gavi, with Bellingham, Pedri, he's a massive talent. I think he's going to grow during the World Cup. I think Germany can surprise.

  10. Post update

    FT: Spain 1-1 Germany

    Jurgen Klinsmann

Former Germany head coach on BBC One

I think Musiala was the outstanding player for Germany at such a young age. He's full of surprising elements, he's not scared. He is a fantastic young player that grows through the Bayern system. It's his first World Cup and he will only grow more and more.

  11. 'Concern that Germany aren't keeping clean sheets'

    FT: Spain 1-1 Germany

    Jurgen Klinsmann

Former Germany head coach on BBC One

It is a concern that Germany haven't kept a clean sheet in eight games this year. They are a team that are growing.

We haven't found the ideal back four. We have been changing it a lot.

  12. Germany can't shut up shop

    FT: Spain 1-1 Germany

Germany are without a clean sheet in competitive matches in this calendar year (eight games). The last time the DFB team recorded a competitive clean sheet was back in November 2021 in a World Cup qualifier against Liechtenstein (9-0).

  13. Post update

    FT: Spain 1-1 Germany

    Peter Schmeichel

Former Manchester United goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

At the end of the day, the result is a fair reflection of what we've seen today. Two of the best teams in the footballing world and Germany very much improved from what we saw against Japan. They looked solid in the way they defended and in control up against a team who humiliated Costa Rica. We didn't see any opportunities like Spain had against Costa Rica today.

  14. Post update

    FT: Spain 1-1 Germany

    Peter Schmeichel

Former Manchester United goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

The coaches pick the players to start the game, they decided on the tactics and there's not much they can do apart from substitutions. Sometimes we just have to applaud what they do.

The first was Morata, he changed the way they played and within minutes he'd scored. And the celebrations between the coaches was incredible, it was as good as players.

And then Germany made their substitutions and it was a move by two substitutes and Musiala for the goal.

  15. Post update

    FT: Spain 1-1 Germany

    Rio Ferdinand

Former England defender on BBC One

Niclas Fullkrug's finish was an amazing strike. A devastating finish.

Aymeric Laporte's role in the goal was making me scratch my head. He ran inside and left the man who ended up scoring. If he followed the run and stayed in his slot the goal doesn't happen.

The fact Fullkrig is a real number nine is the difference between him and Jamal Musiala's effort.

  16. Post update

    FT: Spain 1-1 Germany

    Jurgen Klinsmann

Former Germany head coach on BBC One

Niclas Fullkrug is probably only part of the Germany squad because you are allowed to bring 26 players to this World Cup.

He is a proper number nine at least. What a fantastic moment for him.

  17. Post update

    Rio Ferdinand

Former England defender on BBC One

Morata enabled them to qualify. He's done it again today. Substitutions in tournament football are imperative. You need good substitutes to be able to come on and grasp the game and he's one who can do that.

  18. Two in two for Alvaro

    Ft: Spain 1-1 Germany

Alvaro Morata became the fifth player to score in his first two World Cup appearances for Spain after Fernando Torres, Basora, Zarra, and Jon Andoni Goikoetxea. However, Morata is the first of those five to score both times as a sub.

Morata is only the third player to come off the bench in each of his first two World Cup appearances and score in both, after Memphis Depay in 2014 and Ricardo Pelaez in 1998.

  19. 'A tough game'

    FT: Spain 1-1 Germany

Spain goalscorer Alvaro Morata speaking to BBC One: "When we are on the bench we are always focused on coming on and impacting the game and that we might be important to change the game. It was a tough game. Germany have an amazing team and it was a really good game. It was two teams that could be a semi-final or final in a World Cup.

"I got told to play like I do all the time and keep the team help the ball and attack the spaces. That is what I do. It is the same coming off the bench as starting and the most important thing is to win. They scored an amazing goal and from tomorrow we'll keep training and pushing and staying positive.

"Japan are a tough team. They run a lot and are good tactically. It is another tough game but we are in a World Cup and every game is crazy."
