It was chaos.

It was end-to-end stuff between Costa Rica and Germany, it was absolute chaos everywhere.

At the end of the day it's a story of chances not taken. Football can be really, really cruel but also really awesome.

Luke: UNBELIEVABLE. Japan played out of their skin tonight and so much deserve that group win and place in the Last 16. The drama from tonight’s two games sums up precisely why I love football and the World Cup so much. Proper magic.

Here's a still before the cross for Japan's winner where the ball appears to have gone out of play but apparently the ball is in play if the curvature of the ball is over the line.

Germany had 32 efforts on goal against Costa Rica, the highest total by any team in a single match at the 2022 World Cup.

Spain knocked in seven goals in 17 attempts against the same opposition.

If Germany had been a touch more clinical this evening, well, who knows.

These were the average positions throughout the 90 minutes. The game was barely played in the Germany half.

Ultimately, it did Hansi Flick's side no good.

We've had a game that was the football equivalent of snakes and ladders.

Japan will play Croatia on Monday at 15.00 GMT in the round of 16. Spain will take on Morocco at the same time on Tuesday.

Germany and Costa Rica go home.

Remarkable.

Some extremely disconsolate faces at the Al Bayt Stadium as both Costa Rica and Germany exit the World Cup.

Jamal Musiala probably deserves a goal for his performance but he doesn't look like he is going to get one as his deflected shot is saved by Keylor Navas.

The Bayern Munich player has now had eight shots in this match.

This is the goal that has taken Japan into the last 16. What do you think? Was the ball in or out?
