Add this to the collection of shots that Canada have had off target. They just need to increase that quality in front of goal.

    Belgium 1-0 Canada

Well this is fun. Canada have come out all guns blazing. They're throwing bodies forward in search of an equaliser.

  3. 'David has to do better'published at 20:11 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2022

    Belgium 1-0 Canada

    Jermaine Jenas
Former England midfielder on BBC One

David has got to do much better there. It's a beautiful cross from Eustaquio, he's got to get it on target.

  4. CLOSE!published at 49 mins

    Belgium 1-0 Canada

How many chances do Canada want?

Great work by Stephen Eustaquio finds Jonathan David at the back post but his header drops just wide.

Les Rouges have done everything but score.

  5. SUBSTITUTIONSpublished at 47 mins

    Belgium 1-0 Canada

Roberto Martinez has reacted to that first 45 by making two changes at the start of the second half.

  7. 'Canada need to be sharper'published at 20:05 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2022

    HT: Belgium 1-0 Canada

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

The only problem with this Canada team is that, with all the great stuff that we've seen, only two of their shots have been on target - and that's why they've got to sharpen up after having 14 shots.

Here's Kevin De Bruyne's touchmap from a half in which he had the ball 15 times.

The only player who had fewer touches was Junior Hoilett, with 14.

  10. Postpublished at 20:02 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2022

    HT: Belgium 1-0 Canada

Canada had more shots (14) and more touches in the box (26) in that first half than England did in their 6-2 win against Iran in total (13 and 25)… but no goals.

  11. 'Lots of energy'published at 20:01 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2022

    HT: Belgium 1-0 Canada

    Dion Dublin
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Belgium haven't needed to take charge of this game because Canada have been wasteful.

That is the only negative I have on them. Very positive, lots of energy, need to do better in the final third.

Belgium waited and waited. Quality pass, quality finish.

Tom: Canada’s build up play is great but they are just lacking the final ball to create that clear-cut chance and punish Belgium.

  13. 'Wasteful Canada'published at 19:59 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2022

    HT: Belgium 1-0 Canada

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Ahman Bin Ali Stadium

The scoreline does not reflect what we have just seen but Belgium were able to apply a quality finish whereas Canada were wasteful. Canada have been great value and must believe they still have a real chance against this creaking Belgium side.

Long debate between coach Roberto Martinez and Kevin De Bruyne after the goal. Belgium may lead but they have been so poor.

Steven: While he is a talent, the player to frustrate me the most is Alphonso Davies. He keeps trying to take the whole Belgium team on - is he believing in his hype so much? Why did he even take that penalty? Something tells me his ego has firmly come in to play.

  15. 'Tough game for Belgium'published at 19:55 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2022

    HT: Belgium 1-0 Canada

    Vincent Kompany
Former Belgium and Manchester City captain on BBC One

I'm surprised at Belgium's performance so far and at the athleticism of Canada. We're lucky to have the first goal. We lack a little bit of speed up front to run in behind. It's a tough game.

Canada haven't won any of their last three matches when they've conceded the opening goal in a World Cup game.

Future Ballon d'Or winner Jean-Pierre Papin started that run by scoring for France against them at Mexico '86.

Dave: Massively unlucky for Canada. Absolutely dominant, get awarded 1 of the 3 penalties they should have had and Belgium score from a long straight ball over the top. Gutting

He has to put that away!

Huge chance for Canada to get back on level terms as a cross is fizzed into the Belgium box but Tajon Buchanan pokes it over under pressure.

  20. 'Belgium will be thanking their lucky stars'published at 19:47 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2022

    Belgium 1-0 Canada

    Jermaine Jenas
Former England midfielder on BBC One

Out of absolutely nothing. Just poor defending from Canada. Batshuayi has a yard of space and it's a really good finish from him. He just guides it into that far corner.

Belgium will be thanking their lucky stars because they have been nowhere near good enough in the first half. John Herdman will be fuming with that defending, just one straight ball. You've got to deal with it.
