John Herdman believes his Canada side proved they belong at the World Cup after they outshone Belgium in their narrow 1-0 defeat against the side ranked second in the world.

Canada – 39 places lower than Belgium in the rankings – had earlier missed a penalty before Michy Batshuayi's only goal as Alphonso Davies’ tame effort was saved by Thibaut Courtois.

Playing in their first World Cup in 36 years, Canada more than held their own and had 21 shots on goal compared to nine from Belgium.

Englishman Herdman guided Les Rouges back to the world stage following a fine qualification campaign – becoming the first coach to manage at both the men’s and women’s World Cups.

“They showed they do belong here,” he said.

“They (the fans) walked away proud I’m sure, proud and feeling like we are a footballing nation. We came into the game with a couple of goals, the first was to play fearless and the second goal was to entertain."

• Croatia's only defeat in their past 17 games was by 3-0 at home to Austria in the Nations League in June (W11, D5).
• They failed to progress beyond the group stage at all three previous World Cups when they didn't win their opening fixture.
• Canada have lost all four of their World Cup matches. They are also yet to score despite 50 attempts on goal across those games.
• The Canadians could become only the second nation to fail to score in their first five World Cup fixtures, emulating Bolivia (1930-94.

Looking at how Canada have approached this tournament, they deserve something. They've become an interest of the neutral supporter. They have to take credit for how they've performed in the first game. It's going to be interesting to see how this Croatian side who have been around for quite a while cope with that.

Canada are a bit like the USA in that they play front-foot football and are exciting to watch but can find themselves being picked off by teams who are willing to wait for them to blow up.

They might get some joy here though. Croatia are not exactly free-scoring and are not the team they were when they reached the final four years ago.

I went for Maghrib (sunset) prayers at Aspire Mosque, which stands in the forecourt of Khalifa International Stadium, a few yards from the turnstiles at that end of the ground.

Making my way out, I met Jeehad from Canada, proudly sporting his country's shirt and a scarf wrapped around his neck.

Asked if his side could get a result tonight, he said: "I think we will.

"We have a young team full of energy while Croatia are an ageing side."

Having travelled all the way over by himself, this is the only match he has tickets for.

He said there are plenty on resale on the Fifa website, but there is just no way of purchasing them.

I sat in a cafe opposite the beach in Doha early this morning and overheard some Canadians.

We started chatting about the World Cup in general when they casually dropped in that their son is Canada midfielder Jonathan Osorio, from Toronto FC.

We spoke about his early years in Uruguay, gaining experience with Nacional and how he is enjoying the World Cup.

His father is from Argentina and he was delighted with Lionel Messi’s inspired goal last night.

They weren’t overly impressed with England’s performance against the USA though…

It was red and white wherever you looked outside Khalifa International Stadium in the lead-up to this game.

The unmistakeable checkered-print shirts of the Croatians and the Maple Leaf flags of the Canadians.

This was supposed to be a straightforward Group F match - it is anything but after the North American side's boss John Herdman vowed to "Eff the Croatians up".

This one could get spicy.

John Herdman, the County Durham-born former Sunderland youth coach who previously coached the Canada national women’s side, has tried to brush off the uproar over his comments.

He said: “We’ve been on a media blackout since November 14, so there’s not much we see in the media, but when you get a text from your wife telling you you need to start working out before you get home, you know something’s going on!

“We’re super-excited for a huge, huge match. Our team are bright and clear ready to go, and it’s going to be a defining moment for Canada in this World Cup.

“It’s one of those ‘do or die’ games that we have to we have to perform in to stay at a World Cup.”

Canada boss John Herdman ruffled more than a few feathers in the Croatia camp with his choice words in a post-match squad huddle after the Belgium game. “I told them they belong here. And we’re going to go and eff Croatia,” said Herdman in a post-match interview.

Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic will need little team talk to get the team motivated as the 2018 runners-up aim to improve from an opening goalless draw against Morocco.

“The Croatia team deserves respect from everyone," he said. "We have proven that by the way we have played and our conduct during the World Cup.

“We are the runners-up, second in the world. We respect everyone equally so we expect our opposing teams to respect us.

“This way of putting words together is not a sign of respect.”

Croatia, runners-up in 2018, began their World Cup campaign by being held to 0-0 draw in a hard-fought contest against Morocco.
