Alphonso Davies scored Canada's first ever World Cup goal, but it was not enough to stop them being knocked out of the tournament following a defeat by Croatia.

Bayern Munich winger Davies' second-minute opener gave Canada hope, but they ended up second best and have suffered back-to-back defeats in their first two group matches.

In Group F's earlier game, Morocco shocked world number two side Belgium 2-0 and are second in the standings, behind 2018 finalists Croatia.

John Herdman's outsiders scored from the game's first attack after only 67 seconds courtesy of a towering header from Davies, who darted into the box and powerfully converted from Tajon Buchanan's cross.

Croatia, though, did not panic after falling behind and created numerous chances, with striker Andrej Kramaric seeing a goal ruled out for offside.

But the former Leicester striker equalised with a first-time angled shot from Ivan Perisic's pass, and Marko Livaja put them ahead with a rasping drive from the edge of the box.

Kramaric was denied by Milan Borjan's fine save in the second half and at the other end, Dominik Livakovic acrobatically tipped over Jonathan David's long-range curler.

Hoffenheim frontman Kramaric got his second of the game by coolly converting into the far corner, and substitute Lovro Majer wrapped up the match by netting in injury time.

Milan Borjan was beaten four times in the Canada goal, but this was a good save to deny Croatia twice in quick succession.

Ivan Perisic has been directly involved in 16 goals at World Cups and Euros combined (nine goals, seven assists), six more than any other Croatia player.

Aged 33 years and 298 days, Perisic became the third-oldest player on record (1966+) to assist twice in a World Cup game, after Hungary’s Laszlo Fazekas (34 years, 243 days) and Denmark’s Michael Laudrup (34 years, 13 days).

Croatia go top of Group F while Belgium, second in the world, will need to beat them in their last game to avoid an early exit.

Morocco will be in the last 16 if they get a point against Canada.

Sho: Canada just outclassed today. But hopefully they use this tournament to grow their team and start to take this sport seriously.

Anon: Real shame for Canada. Most people's underdogs just really haven't impressed. Always that 1 or 2 team(s) in the tournament that really let down and Canada are like that. Unfortunate but Croatia were magnificent and let the games continue.

After a blistering start from Canada it was then Croatia who went through the gears. Really good football, very composed, measured play.

They were brutal at times with the way they kept the ball and counter-attacked. They'll be more than happy with their performance today.

Olly: I do feel for this Canada side. Exciting, attacking football despite lack of World Cup experience. Better to watch than most sides. Didn't deserve to lose against Belgium. Will be sad not to see these plucky underdogs in the knockouts.

Croatia were brilliant towards the end of the first half. Credit to Canada for taking the game to them but Croatia were too good for them in the end.

Croatia go top of Group F and Canada's hopes of reaching the last 16 are over, despite scoring in only the second minute.

But Croatia's class then shone through. Andrej Kramaric scored twice, with Marko Livaja and substitute Lovro Majer also getting on the scoresheet.

This sucks. They looked good in moments, but struggled to put together a complete game. They gave us hope - which was wonderful and awful. Facing Belgium and Croatia at first World Cup in 36 years isn't easy. This was a huge step for Canadian men's soccer. Still stings.

The defender completely misses it, it goes through his legs and it's an easy finish.

Croatia have just been too good tonight. They've shown real intent with this performance. Their midfield players have really turned up and they have a finisher in Kramaric.

I'm not too sure what Miller's thinking. He comes across, the ball bounces in front of him but really makes a poor error.

It's then two Croatia players going towards goal and it's really unselfish. They do it well and Majer strokes the ball left-footed into the roof of the net.

    Lovro Majer (Croatia)

It's four for Croatia and another boost for their goal difference. It's a bad mistake from defender Kamal Miller with the ball going through his legs.

That allows Croatia to break through and Mislav Orsic is unselfish and puts it on a plate for Lovro Majer to score.

Canada getting knocked out feels so unjustified seeing how energetic and determined they are. But they can leave with their heads high and build on this progress for four years later when they co-host the tournament .

There's been so many attacks in the game where Croatia have won the ball in the middle of the pitch and the way they've broken forwards, they've just been so intelligent with the way they've laid the ball off. They really have linked up well and it's been really organised attacking play today from Croatia.

I really think that Kovacic was so important in that early stage of the game where they went 1-0 down. He's the one that's got the legs and the engine and the running power to deal with it.
