  1. 'Two parallel universes on human rights controversies'

It didn't quite go to plan during their opening game for Germany, but they ensured they made a statement before it even kicked off yesterday. All XI who started the game covered their mouth when they lined up for their team shot.

Manager Hansi Flick said afterwards it was "to convey the message that Fifa is silencing" teams.

The act was greeted with support by some, but criticised by others. These two conflicting views are at the heart of a piece written by BBC News' Shaimaa Khalil, which I urge you to read here.

  2. Post update

  3. Brazil's recent drought

    Brazil v Serbia (19:00 GMT)

Willian on his knees as Germany celebrate in 2014

For all of Brazil's brilliance over the years in football's biggest event, the South American nation haven't lit up the world stage as much as they'd like in recent tournaments.

In 2006 and 2010, they fell at the quarter-final stage, with Thierry Henry's goal sending them to defeat against France in the former and Wesley Sneijder's double for the Netherlands seeing them off in the latter.

In 2014, they reached the last four on home soil but I think we can all remember what happened next. In front of an initially carnival but increasingly stunned crowd in Belo Horizonte, they were hit for seven by a rampant Germany, who at least had the good grace to go on and beat Argentina in the final.

Four years ago, in Russia, it was Kevin de Bruyne and company's turn to inflict the killer blow, Belgium sending them out in the last eight.

  4. Tite not holding back

    Brazil v Serbia (19:00 GMT)

Brazil coach Tite is making his intentions clear with that starting line-up. Talk about positive intent.

Neymar is the attacking star turn but he is joined by Richarlison, Raphinha, Vinicius and Lucas Paqueta - some talent in there and they have their outstanding last line of defence in Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson.

Fulham's Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ajaz's Dusan Tadic will pose big threats to a Brazil defence marshalled by the veteran Chelsea star Thiago Silva.

  5. Team news - Neymar and Richarlison start for Brazil

    Brazil v Serbia (19:00 GMT)

Brazil boss Tite has named Richarlison in attack for their first Group G match against Serbia.

Neymar slots in behind him, flanked by Raphinha and Vinicus Junior.

Meanwhile, Fulham striker Aleksandr Mitrovic leads the line for Serbia, supported by ex-Southampton man Dusan Tadic.

  6. Brazil in relaxed mood

    Brazil v Serbia (19:00 GMT)

    Phil McNulty

BBC Sport chief football writer at Lusail Stadium

Brazil fans have descended on Lusail Stadium in their thousands and huge roars greeted the sight of the World Cup favourites on the big screens getting off the team coach.

And Brazil's players hardly looked riddled with nerves.

They held a communal dance on the team coach before disembarking while Neymar, clad in gold headphones, went into an impromptu dance with Raphinha when he walked into the dressing room.

  7. Nothing for granted

    Brazil v Serbia (19:00 GMT)

As this tournament is teaching us, though, favourites are there to be taken down. And Serbia are no mugs, with a few top-notch forwards of their own.

Brazil will need to be on their game tonight to avoid following in the footsteps of Germany and old foes Argentina.

  8. The favourites

    Brazil v Serbia (19:00 GMT)

No nation has won the World Cup as many times as Brazil. Five times they held aloft the trophy - be it Jules Rimet or its current iteration. They already have permanent ownership of the former after their victories in 1958, 1962 and 1970. A triumph in Qatar and Fifa will have to get the moulds out to forge another global trinket.

The current Brazil rock up at this tournament having come through qualifying unbeaten. They bring with them arguably the most stellar set of forwards ever assembled in a single squad - Neymar, Richarlison, Raphinha, Gabriel Jesus, Vinicius Jr, Antony, Rodrygo, Pedro, Gabriel Martinelli. I mean, wow.

There's a reason why the bookies have them as 3/1 favourites for the whole competition.
