A reminder of how both sides will line up at the start.

• Both Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez scored for Uruguay in the 2010, 2014 and 2018 World Cups, and either could become the first player from that nation to score in four different editions of the tournament.
• Portugal have lost just one of their last 13 group stage games at the World Cup (won seven, drew five), going down 4-0 against Germany in their tournament opener in 2014. They have won their second match in five of their seven previous appearances at the competition, failing only in 1986 (0-1 v Poland) and 2014 (2-2 v USA).
• Uruguay have failed to score in their last two World Cup games – only once have they done so in three consecutive games at the tournament (between 1986 and 1990). However, the South American nation have won their second group game in each of the last three editions of the World Cup.
• Portugal have won just one of their last nine meetings with South American nations in all competitions (drew three, lost five), beating Argentina 1-0 in a friendly in November 2014.

Portugal are looking to extend a winning start in Group H after opening their campaign by beating Ghana 3-2 on Thursday, a match which included a goal from Cristiano Ronaldo that made him the first player in the men’s game to score at five World Cups.

Uruguay’s opener saw them draw 0-0 with South Korea, and boss Diego Alonso said: “We would have loved to win in the first match, that’s for sure, but we cannot underestimate the opponent, we cannot underestimate the result we had either.

“We are here to win games, that’s our ultimate goal, and we want to give our best. But at the same time we know in a competition it is difficult, that you need to bring your best and sometimes even if you perform well (or not), anything can happen.

“Of course Portugal have a very good squad, excellent players, a wonderful coach with wide experience. They’re a dangerous team. But on the other hand we also have our own arguments, our own weapons. We will try to win. We will bring our ‘A’ game. Lets see what happens.”

Uruguay, under Alonso’s predecessor Oscar Tabarez, beat Portugal 2-1 in the last 16 of the 2018 World Cup – Alonso stressed when asked about that that “all matches are different”. Portugal are currently ninth in the world rankings, while Uruguay are 14th.

Portugal are without Paris St-Germain defender Danilo Pereira tonight after he picked up an injury over the weekend which has baffled boss Fernando Santos.

A statement on the Portuguese Football Federation’s official website on Saturday said the Paris St Germain player was unavailable having “suffered a fracture of three costal arches”.

Santos told a press conference on Sunday: “That’s a type of injury no-one can explain. We do not understand how that could have happened. It’s normal these type of injuries happen, but we didn't see how it happened.

“Initially we didn't think it was very serious, because we made a few exams to see if he was breathing properly and apparently that was the case, but afterwards we see it was more serious than we expected. But we are following it up.

“We are very sad because of his injury. Now we’re thinking about his health and I think above all we need to think about a player as a human being.

“He’s someone with a very positive energy and I’m sure he’ll be sending good vibes our way.”

Lusail Stadium resounded to deafening roars of appreciation from Portugal's fans when the face of Cristiano Ronaldo flashed up on the huge screens as the teams were announced.

It should be noted there was not the same level of enthusiasm from Uruguay's fans.

Uruguay have won this tournament twice before - in 1930 and 1950.

In recent competitions, they reached the semi-finals in 2010 after beating Ghana on penalties in the quarter-final, moments after striker Luis Suarez had denied the African side a certain goal with a clear handball on the line, which he was sent off for.

Four years later, Suarez scored twice as Uruguay beat England 2-1 but then in their next match Suarez bit Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini, with Suarez later getting a four-month ban.

The team then lost in the last 16 to Colombia. Last time out in Russia Uruguay reached the quarter-finals, losing 2-0 to eventual winners France.

Whoever wins tonight will be top of Group H with one round of matches to go.

Lots of Uruguay fans with Luis Suarez face masks but they are going to be disappointed as he pays the price for a poor performance in the goalless draw with South Korea by being dtropped to the bench.

The 35-year-old looked way off the pace so the Uruguayan attack tonights sees another veteran, Edinson Cavani, working in tandem with the great hope of the future, Darwin Nunez.

Cristiano Ronaldo insisted his chapter at Manchester United was “closed” after he made World Cup history just two days after severing ties at Old Trafford to help Portugal beat Ghana 3-2 in their opening Group H match.

Ronaldo, who is a free agent after his acrimonious break-up with United, became the first man to score in five World Cup final tournaments when he tucked away Portugal’s first from the penalty spot.

Andre Ayew’s equaliser briefly looked like it would spoil Portugal’s party, but a quickfire double from Joao Felix and substitute Rafael Leao restored the advantage before Osman Bukari hit a late second for Ghana.

Speaking in Portuguese, which was translated by Fifa, Ronaldo said: “This was a beautiful moment in my fifth World Cup.

“We know in these competitions our first match is crucial. But also, on the record of being the only first player in five World Cups to score, that is something which makes me very proud."

Ronaldo took just one question from reporters, only touching briefly on his fall-out with United.

“It was an important step and we won,” he said. “It was a week that finished this chapter, it is closed. We won, I could help my team – and all the rest does not matter.”
