  1. Thanks and goodbyepublished at 22:00 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2022

Today is the last day of the World Cup where you have four games back-to-back, instead moving to two at 15:00 GMT and another two at 19:00 GMT.

And what a day Tuesday promises to be as Groups A and B get sorted out. Netherlands are top of Group A and face already-eliminated Qatar before what looks to be a straight shootout between Ecuador and Senegal.

Then at 19:00 GMT it is the United States versus Iran.

Oh, and just the small matter of Wales versus England, with that one live on BBC One. Can't wait, make sure you don't miss that one.

As always, thanks for your company and your comments and until next time, bye for now.

Andrew Priestley: It shouldn’t have been a penalty. The very handball laws the referees follow dictate that it wasn’t a penalty. Tonight’s referee has made an egregious error. End of discussion.

Romain B. Fernandes: clear penalty decision (what controversy, huh??). If the hand didn’t touch the ball, Bruno Fernandes would be clear on goal to score!

Ben Timmo: Gimenez neither "deliberately touches the ball with his hand", nor has he "has made their body unnaturally bigger". His arm was in a natural position for his movement, and it clearly wasn't deliberate. No justification for a penalty.

Portugal secured their place in the last 16 of the World Cup with victory over Uruguay in a scrappy encounter at Lusail Stadium.

A game short on real quality saw the deadlock broken in the 54th minute when a cross from Bruno Fernandes floated beyond Uruguay keeper Sergio Rochet, the goal given to Manchester United's midfield man despite Cristiano Ronaldo claiming it had glanced off his head.

Portugal made most of the running until they went ahead but Uruguay, who must now beat Ghana in their final Group H game to have a chance of qualifying, created chances of their own and could have taken a point.

Rodrigo Bentancur's brilliant first-half run was halted by Portugal keeper Diogo Costa's save, while substitute Maxi Gomez hit the post as Uruguay went in search of an equaliser.

Portugal wrapped up the win in stoppage time when Fernandes got his second from the spot after a video assistant referee intervention which adjudged Jose Gimenez had handled.

Fernandes almost got his hat-trick before the final whistle but saw a low shot strike the post.

The game was interrupted in the second half by a pitch invader carrying a rainbow flag and wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the words 'Save Ukraine' on the front and 'Respect for Iranian woman' on the back.

Bruno Fernandes of Portugal controls the ball against Jose Maria Gimenez of Uruguay during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Group H match between Portugal and Uruguay at Lusail Stadium on November 28, 2022 in Lusail City, Qatar. Marc Quinn: It's a penalty all day long. The handball stops Bruno from going through on goal. Yes it's harsh because he's falling but its the most obvious handball you could see.

  17. 'The ball doesn't change direction'published at 21:09 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2022

    FT: Portugal 2-0 Uruguay

    Matthew Upson
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think it's Bruno Fernandes' goal, the only evidence I've got is the replay that I can see in front of me and the ball doesn't change direction. You normally see the ball change it's rotation or direction slightly if there is a glancing header.

It won't go down as Ronaldo's goal on the scoresheet and that is what he is bothered about because he thrives off those records. But it is his goal in the sense that his presence and his run caused it.

  18. Winless Uruguaypublished at 21:08 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2022

    Portugal 2-0 Uruguay

Uruguay have attempted 11 shots in the game, their highest total in a single match in the 2022 World Cup.

However, the South American side have also failed to win in their last three games in the World Cup.

Their previous tournament winless streak was from 2 July 2010 to 14 June 2014 - a run of four games.

  19. 'Losing more than we gain from VAR'published at 21:06 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2022

    FT: Portugal 2-0 Uruguay

    Tim Vickery
BBC Sport South American football expert

Uruguay paid the penalty for being happy while it was 0-0. One silly mistake and then it's not 0-0 anymore. Varela, the right wing-back, lost his position and played Cristiano Ronaldo onside.

Then Uruguay are chasing the game. For a while I thought they were good value for an equaliser, Maxi Gomez hit the post.

The penalty that clinches it isn't satisfactory, it looks like a supporting arm which isn't supposed to be handball.

If we're going to have this delay and at the end of it still get decisions wrong then I feel like we are losing more than we are gaining from VAR.

Uruguay love to do things the heroic way and it's going to have to be heroic now. The problem is that their fate isn't in their own hands.
