All five previous meetings between Netherlands and USA have been in friendlies – Oranje won the first four between 1998 and 2010, with USA winning the most recent encounter 4-3 in 2015.

Netherlands are unbeaten in their last 19 World Cup games against non-European nations (W13 D6) since a 3-2 loss to Brazil in the 1994 quarter-final. However, two of their six draws in this run have seen them eliminated on penalties (vs Brazil in 1998 and Argentina in 2014).

Meanwhile, the USA are winless in their last 11 World Cup games against European nations (D6 L5) since beating Portugal 3-2 in 2002. Overall, USA have won just three of their 23 World Cup games against European sides (D7 L13), also beating Belgium in 1930 and England in 1950.

It's not just at the World Cup, Gakpo has scored some great goals for PSV Eindhoven in club football recently.

He's fast, he knows what to do, he can finish left or right-footed. He is a player to watch.

It is becoming obvious that fitness and athleticism are becoming as much a factor in deciding matches at this World Cup as technical ability.

That is one of the main reasons we saw so many shocks in the group stage, although of course the teams who caused upsets also had a very good tactical plan.

For example, the physical output we saw from Japan when they beat Spain and Germany, Saudi Arabia when they beat Argentina, and also Morocco in their win over Belgium, helped them overcome teams who, on paper, had much better players.

You would normally expect to see the more technical side wear the opposition down by the end of games, with more spaces appearing when they tire late on.

In the Premier League, you see Manchester City do that all the time - they scored more goals in the last 15 minutes of matches than anyone else last season.

Here in Qatar, it's been different. The decisive moments from the underdogs have largely come in the second half of games.

They are the ones finishing games strongly, and the new rule allowing teams to make five substitutions instead of three definitely helps.

Football is a squad game now - not just during tournaments but in the middle of matches too.

South Korea's amazing late success over Portugal was another totally unexpected result, but it was no surprise it was a substitute who scored their injury-time winner.

The knockout rounds bring in that old favourite of football fans - the penalty shootout.

There have been 30 shootouts in the World Cup over the years, but how can the past inform the present? Are there any nuggets of information or insight we can glean from all those kicks taken in pursuit of victory?

The boffins at BBC Sport and Opta have crunched the numbers and you can read the findings here.

Here's a question... when you think of World Cup penalty shootouts, which one penalty is the first that springs to mind? I think (in part because I've tried to block out all the disastrous England ones) is Roberto Baggio's at USA '94.

The Netherlands sailed through their group but I don't think they look anything special. In fact, they have been pretty underwhelming so far.

They are my left-field pick to win this World Cup but, to even get near that, they will have to improve on what they have shown us so far.

I am not sure that will happen, and this might be another game where the Dutch find a way to win, rather than dazzle us.

The danger for them is if they take the United States too lightly, because a lot of England fans thought we would beat them easily and the reality was very different.

The US are not just well organised, they are young and hungry and I like the way they play. My only worry about them is that they don't have a goalscorer in their team.

Christian Pulisic is an injury doubt, and if he does miss out it is a big problem for them. They struggle to find the net anyway.

Gakpo could become the first Netherlands player to score in each of his first four World Cup appearances, with Christian Vieri the last European player to do so in 1998. Indeed, Gakpo could become the first Dutchman to score in four consecutive World Cup games overall.

When you look at this Dutch team, a lot of the talk was about other players but Cody Gakpo is the one lighting it up - and in some style.

He's so hard for defenders to pick him up because of his movement, he's got that quality and he likes to link up the play as well. He's so exciting.

• Goalkeeper Andries Noppert made 11 saves in the group phase. His save percentage of 92% is the highest of the competition.
• Frenkie de Jong made a group phase high 13 tackles, and was equal most prolific tackler with Ibrahima Konate (France) and Achraf Hakimi (Morocco).
• Of the 16 teams to reach this stage, the Netherlands have made the most fouls (47). No player has made more fouls at World Cup 2022 than Denziel Dumfries. The Dutch right wing-back has 10 fouls to his name across the three matches so far.
• Only 26% of goal attempts by the USA were on target during the group phase. Of the teams in the last-16, only they and Poland managed to place less than 30% of their attempts on target.

If you play in that position, you have to play to your strengths and he finds himself in very good goal scoring positions very often. Cody Gakpo is not one of those players who you have to supply for all the time.

He's very much an individual talent, lots of little skill, lovely little flicks, very aware of where he is on the pitch and he always chooses the right finish. Will it be a right foot, left foot or header today? I don't know.

Stakes are high - if the US men’s team beats the Netherlands they’ll advance to the quarter-finals for the first time in two decades.

Ali: This USA team is too strong for Holland.

England forward Phil Foden says his World Cup has been a "mixed bag" but believes he has a chance of starting England's last-16 clash with Senegal.

Foden scored in England's 3-0 Group B win against Wales, having missed his side's goalless draw with the USA.

"It has been up and down," the Manchester City forward told BBC TV.

"[I am] disappointed not to start more games but it is part of the tournament. I am a team player and when I get the opportunities I'll take them."

Foden has scored nine goals and assisted twice in 22 appearances for his club and country this season.

He came on as a 71st-minute substitute in England's opener with Iran and played all 90 minutes against Wales.

The Dutch are everywhere. We know the Oranje bring the support with them wherever they go.

A father and son are here for the entire tournament and are hoping the Netherlands will be there at the end but they're not overly confident.

"I think it will be 0-0. We play very defensive," said the father on the right.

"But we hope for the best. We will see."

The son was a bit more optimistic. He had Denzel Dumfries' name on the back of his shirt. "It will be close but I think we can win."

The latest Football News show takes a look at how the US national team’s success in reaching the last 16 in Qatar with impact the growth of the sport and their domestic game.

They are joined by David Bruce from the MLS, who says the run is a "massive positive" for the league.

Finally from former USA midfielder Stuart Holden: "This US team are the best when they can play with the ball and when they can play with the full backs high up the field and I don't think a back three really suits them.

"The US have a couple of different players who are not fully match fit for 90 minutes and that could be the difference in this game against the Netherlands where there's a chance of 120 minutes and maybe penalties after."
